Shepherd is a small village in Isabella County in central Lower Michigan, roughly ten minutes south of Mount Pleasant along US-127. The area sits in the Chippewa River watershed, surrounded by farmland, wooded county parks, and the tribal lands of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe. It is a practical base for RV travelers who want quick highway access, casino and waterpark amenities in Mount Pleasant, and quieter river and lake camping within a short drive.
RV options near Shepherd range from full-hookup resorts to county-run parks. Saginaw Chippewa Campground and Soaring Eagle Hideaway RV Resort sit next to the Soaring Eagle Casino and Waterpark complex. Mt Pleasant Resort - Outdoor Adventures and River Ridge Campground add family-focused sites with pools and river frontage, and the Isabella County Fairgrounds offers utility hookups during and around scheduled events.
Most campgrounds cluster within about fifteen minutes of Shepherd, so travelers can move between sites, restaurants in Mount Pleasant, and rural attractions without long drives.
Things to do near Shepherd
The Chippewa River is the main outdoor draw. Paddlers float sections between Mount Pleasant and points downstream, and anglers target smallmouth bass, pike, and panfish. Deerfield Nature Park, west of Mount Pleasant, adds hiking trails, mountain-biking routes, and a suspension bridge over the river.
Families staying at Soaring Eagle Hideaway RV Resort or Saginaw Chippewa Campground can use the Soaring Eagle Waterpark and shuttle service to the casino and hotel complex. The Ziibiwing Center of Anishinabe Culture and Lifeways covers regional Native American history, and Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant hosts the Museum of Cultural and Natural History.
For slower days, the Isabella County Fairgrounds hosts the county fair and swap meets, and Lake Isabella and Coldwater Lake to the northwest offer swimming, boat launches, and beach day-use areas.

Peak camping season in central Michigan runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, with warm days, occasional thunderstorms, and long daylight hours. Weekends around the Fourth of July, the Isabella County Fair in August, and major casino concert dates fill sites at the resorts nearest Mount Pleasant well in advance.
Late spring and early fall are quieter. May and September bring cooler nights, fewer bugs, and easier reservations, though water levels on the Chippewa River can swing after heavy rain. Fall color typically peaks in the first half of October across Isabella County. Private RV resorts near Shepherd generally open in April and close by late October, and Isabella County Parks campgrounds at Coldwater Lake and Herrick typically operate from early May through early October.
Winter camping is limited. Most parks close for the season, roads and hookups are winterized, and snow squalls can drop several inches at a time.
How to book campsites near Shepherd
Private RV parks in the area, including Soaring Eagle Hideaway RV Resort, Mt Pleasant Resort - Outdoor Adventures, and River Ridge Campground, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Soaring Eagle Hideaway and Saginaw Chippewa Campground are affiliated with the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe and sit close to the casino and waterpark.
Isabella County Parks manages the closest public campgrounds outside the Shepherd cluster, including Coldwater Lake Family Park and Herrick Recreation Area, through the county's online reservation portal at isabellacounty.goingtocamp.com. Reservations for the summer season typically open in mid-February. The Isabella County Fairgrounds books RV hookups tied to event schedules.
For summer weekends, book two to three months out, and earlier for concert weekends at Soaring Eagle or fair week in Mount Pleasant.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain around Shepherd is flat to gently rolling, with mixed hardwood stands and open farmland. Roads into most campgrounds are paved or well-graded gravel, and big-rig access is generally straightforward at Saginaw Chippewa Campground and Soaring Eagle Hideaway RV Resort, which use full hookups and pull-through sites.
Expect standard Midwest summer conditions: mosquitoes and biting flies after rain, occasional severe thunderstorms, and warm humid nights in July and August. Cell coverage is reliable near US-127 and in Mount Pleasant, and there are grocery stores, propane, laundromats, and RV service options within a short drive.
Quiet hours are enforced at most parks, and pets are typically allowed on leash. Firewood is often required to be purchased on site to limit the spread of invasive pests.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Shepherd, MI?
RV rental in Shepherd is one of the better values in central Michigan. Travel trailers typically start around $75 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $150 to $275 per night, and larger Class A rigs run between $225 and $400 nightly. Because Shepherd sits just south of Mount Pleasant and the Soaring Eagle Casino corridor, weekday pricing is usually noticeably cheaper than Friday and Saturday nights. To score a cheap RV rental in Shepherd, book midweek, travel in May or September shoulder season, and look for hosts offering weekly discounts. Pro tip: filter by Instant Book to see rigs you can lock in tonight without waiting for host approval.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Shepherd%2C%20MichiganWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Shepherd, Michigan?
Good news: a standard driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Shepherd. Michigan does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for the motorhomes and travel trailers listed on RVezy, including Class A, Class C, and fifth wheels. Approved drivers on RVezy are generally 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID securely through the platform when you book. Visiting from outside the US? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local auto club along with your home license. Most first-time renters in mid-Michigan are surprised at how straightforward the process is, even with a 30-foot rig.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental in Shepherd protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every booking on RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the road around Shepherd with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers most damage to the vehicle during your trip, and you choose your coverage level during checkout (not the host), so you can pick the option that matches your comfort. This provides meaningful financial protection for renters exploring the Pere Marquette Rail-Trail, Lake Isabella, or heading up toward the Saginaw Chippewa region. Pro tip: review the protection tiers carefully before you confirm so you start your Shepherd RV trip totally relaxed.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Shepherd RV rental?
Booking is low-risk because RVezy, not the individual host, sets and manages the cancellation policy across every listing. There's a money-back grace period right after you book, and additional protections apply for qualifying situations like severe weather or natural disasters, which matters in Michigan where a sudden lake-effect storm or icy stretch in November can change plans fast. The exact terms appear during checkout and in your RVezy dashboard, so you'll always see the details before you confirm. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best Shepherd rigs, knowing your cancellation window starts the moment you reserve.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in Shepherd?
Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental in Shepherd is easy to find on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll see hosts in Isabella and Midland counties who welcome dogs (and sometimes cats) for a small cleaning fee. Once you're on the road, Michigan state parks and the Pere Marquette Rail-Trail allow leashed dogs on most trails, and Deerfield Nature Park just outside Mount Pleasant has shaded paths perfect for a midday walk. Pack a long lead, water bowl, and proof of rabies vaccination. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet rules and ask about nearby dog-friendly swim spots on the Chippewa River.
michigan.gov/dnr/things-to-do/state-parks/petsCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Shepherd?
Yes, RV delivery in Shepherd is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if it's your first time renting an RV. Many hosts in the Mount Pleasant and Midland area will tow or drive the rig directly to your campground, family cabin, or even your driveway, then level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system. This is a game-changer if you're staying at Soaring Eagle Hideaway RV Resort, River Ridge Family Campground in Breckenridge, or a Saginaw Chippewa event and don't want to drive a big rig yourself. Filter listings by Delivery, message the host with your destination address, and confirm the delivery fee up front. Pro tip: ask the host to top up the generator fuel and propane at drop-off.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Shepherd%2C%20MichiganHow far can I drive from Shepherd on a typical mileage allowance?
Most Shepherd hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with additional miles available at roughly 30 to 45 cents each, which is plenty for exploring mid-Michigan. From Shepherd you can reach Mount Pleasant in about 15 minutes, Midland in about 45 minutes, Traverse City in roughly 2.5 hours, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in about 3.5 hours, and Mackinaw City at the top of the Lower Peninsula in about 4 hours. Planning a bigger loop up to the Upper Peninsula? Look for an RV rental with unlimited mileage by using that filter on RVezy. Pro tip: map your route before booking and ask the host about bundling extra miles for a small discount.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Shepherd%2C%20MichiganWhere are the best campgrounds near Shepherd, MI?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping near Shepherd. Soaring Eagle Hideaway RV Resort just north in Mount Pleasant offers paved full-hookup sites, a heated pool, and a stocked fishing lake. River Ridge Campground in Breckenridge sits along the Pine River with full-hookup pads, a swimming area, and shaded sites. Coldwater Lake Family Park near Weidman has lakefront electric sites and a sandy beach. For state-park lovers, Wilson State Park on Budd Lake in Harrison is about 30 minutes north, with lake access and modern electric sites. Pro tip: book Soaring Eagle on a Sunday-to-Thursday stretch for quieter sites and easier reservations.
midnrreservations.com/When is the best time to visit Shepherd for an RV trip?
Late May through mid-October is prime time for an RV trip from Shepherd, with June, July, and August delivering daytime highs in the upper 70s to mid-80s Fahrenheit and warm lake-swimming weather. September is a local favorite for shoulder-season travelers: temperatures cool to the 60s and 70s, mosquitoes thin out, and you'll catch the start of fiery sugar-maple fall color (Shepherd is famous for its maple syrup tradition and hosts the annual Shepherd Maple Syrup Festival each spring). Winter trips are possible but bring lows in the teens and lake-effect snow, so a four-season rig is essential. Pro tip: book a late-September stay to combine fall colors at Hartwick Pines with quieter campgrounds and lower rates.
weather.gov/dtx/I've never driven an RV before. Is renting in Shepherd a good idea?
It's actually one of the best places to learn. Shepherd sits on flat, open mid-Michigan farmland with low traffic, wide rural roads like M-20 and US-127, and short distances between fuel stops, which is ideal for someone first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host provides a full walkthrough at pickup covering the generator, slide-outs, water system, propane, and waste tanks, and you can text or call them throughout your trip. Many newbies start with a Class C motorhome (drives much like a large van) or a smaller travel trailer under 24 feet. Pro tip: do a short practice loop on Shepherd's quiet side streets before pointing the rig toward Traverse City or Mackinac.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Shepherd%2C%20MichiganWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my Shepherd trip?
You're covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire on US-127, a dead battery at a campground in Clare, or a propane issue near Lake Isabella is just one phone call away from being handled. The roadside team can dispatch towing, jump-starts, lockout help, fuel delivery, and tire service across Michigan. Your host is also a quick text away to troubleshoot anything quirky about their specific rig, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: save the roadside number and your host's contact in your phone before you leave the Shepherd pickup spot.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Shepherd RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, most hosts welcome interstate trips, so an RV road trip from Shepherd to Indiana Dunes, the Wisconsin Dells, or down to Ohio's Hocking Hills is on the table. Cross-border travel into Canada (Ontario is just a few hours east via the Blue Water Bridge at Port Huron) is sometimes allowed but depends on the host's approval, so message them before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage doesn't extend south of the US border. Popular multi-state loops from Shepherd include Michigan's Upper Peninsula via the Mackinac Bridge, Door County in Wisconsin, and Cuyahoga Valley in Ohio. Pro tip: bring your passport just in case Canada becomes part of the plan.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Shepherd RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable in any RV budget, so here's a realistic picture for mid-Michigan: gas in the Shepherd and Mount Pleasant area tracks close to the state average. Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), Class A rigs sit around 6 to 10 MPG, and a tow-behind travel trailer paired with your truck often gets 10 to 14 MPG. Plan around $100 to $175 in fuel for a weekend loop to Traverse City and back. Pro tip: use the GasBuddy app and fill up in Mount Pleasant or Alma where stations along BR-127 are usually a few cents cheaper than highway exits.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Shepherd?
For peak summer weekends (mid-June through Labor Day), book Michigan state parks like Wilson, Mitchell, or Traverse City State Park six months in advance through the Michigan DNR reservation system on midnrreservations.com, which is when sites open on a rolling six-month window. Private parks like Soaring Eagle Hideaway and River Ridge Campground in Breckenridge fill fast for July 4th and Soaring Eagle Casino concert weekends, so reserve 2 to 4 months ahead. For shoulder-season trips in May or late September, two to three weeks of notice is usually plenty. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for the six-month mark if you're chasing a lakefront site at Traverse City State Park.
midnrreservations.com/What are driving conditions like around Shepherd?
Driving in and around Shepherd is genuinely easy, with flat terrain, gentle curves, and wide rural highways like US-127, M-20, and M-46 connecting you to the rest of mid-Michigan. Summer brings clear roads, but watch for deer at dawn and dusk (Isabella County has one of Michigan's higher deer-crash counts) and afternoon thunderstorms in July. From November through March, lake-effect snow can dust the area and bridges ice early, so check MDOT's Mi Drive map before heading out. The Mackinac Bridge has a 20 mph minimum and high-wind restrictions for tall rigs. Pro tip: avoid driving US-127 between Mount Pleasant and Lansing on Friday afternoons during Central Michigan University football weekends.
mdotjboss.state.mi.us/MiDrive/mapWhat amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Shepherd?
Campgrounds near Shepherd offer a great mix of full-service comfort and rustic charm. Private parks like Soaring Eagle Hideaway and River Ridge Campground provide full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, and sewer), Wi-Fi, hot showers, laundry, swimming, and dump stations. Michigan state parks like Wilson State Park and Mitchell State Park typically offer electric sites, modern restrooms with showers, potable water fill stations, and on-site dump stations. Most parks also have fire rings, picnic tables, and a camp store. Need to top off mid-trip? Soaring Eagle and several travel centers along US-127 offer dump and freshwater access. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot drinking-safe hose and a surge protector to handle any older campground pedestals.
michigan.gov/dnr/things-to-do/campingWhat's included inside a typical RV rental in Shepherd?
Shepherd RV rentals come ready for adventure. A standard motorhome rental in Shepherd or travel trailer usually sleeps 4 to 8 across a queen bed, bunks, and a convertible dinette, with a fully equipped kitchen (fridge/freezer, propane stove, microwave, sink, cookware, and dishes), a wet or dry bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control via roof-mount AC and furnace, and a TV with antenna or streaming setup. Most rigs include a built-in generator or solar, multiple seatbelted travel seats, and outdoor camp chairs. Campervan rental Shepherd options (Class B) are leaner but include a kitchenette, bed, and often a portable toilet. Pro tip: check the listing photos and amenities list for Wi-Fi boosters and outdoor speakers if those are must-haves for your crew.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Shepherd%2C%20MichiganWhat add-ons can I get with my Shepherd RV rental?
Hosts in the Shepherd area offer a long list of add-ons to make a family RV trip Shepherd-style effortless. Popular extras include linen and bedding packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits, outdoor fire pits, e-bikes and kayaks ($25 to $50 per day), portable generators, Starlink Wi-Fi, and pet kits. Many hosts include delivery and setup to nearby spots like Soaring Eagle Hideaway, Coldwater Lake Family Park, or Wilson State Park for a flat fee based on distance. Pickup is usually at the host's home with a short orientation, and dropoff windows are flexible if you ask in advance. Mileage policies range from around 100 free miles per night to unlimited. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus linens to skip the laundry and the driving on day one.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Shepherd%2C%20MichiganHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy with a credit or debit card when you book, never directly to the host, which keeps your money protected by the platform. Most Shepherd hosts require a refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig) that's pre-authorized on your card before pickup, not actually charged unless there's damage, excess cleaning, or extra mileage at the end of the trip. After dropoff and a host inspection, the hold is released, usually within a few business days. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos and a short walkaround video of the RV at pickup and dropoff so any deposit questions are easy to resolve.
