Camping near Skidway Lake, Michigan
Skidway Lake is an unincorporated community in Ogemaw County in Michigan's northern Lower Peninsula, roughly midway between West Branch and Sterling along the Rifle River corridor. The area sits within easy reach of the Rifle River Recreation Area, a state-managed park offering fishing, paddling and camping with 10 no-wake lakes and ponds, including Grousehaven and Devoe, plus the Rifle River and several scenic streams. RV travelers use Skidway Lake as a base for float trips, trout fishing and forest hiking.
Private riverfront campgrounds dominate the lodging mix. White's Canoe Livery and Campground and Troll Landing Campground and Canoe Livery L.L.C. both sit directly on the Rifle River, while River View Campground and Canoe Livery offers riverfront sites further along the corridor. Greenwood Campground provides another nearby option, and the Ogemaw County Fair grounds in West Branch host RV camping during events.
Most sites are family-oriented, with electric and water hookups, dump stations, camp stores and canoe or kayak liveries on premises. Cell coverage is generally reliable near I-75; sites deeper in the state forest can be spotty.
Things to do around Skidway Lake
The Rifle River is the main draw. Liveries such as White's Canoe Livery and Campground and Troll Landing Campground and Canoe Livery L.L.C. rent canoes, kayaks and tubes with shuttle service, offering trips ranging from a couple of hours to multi-day paddles. River View Campground and Canoe Livery runs similar float trips from its own launch, and the gentle current suits beginners and families.
Inside the Rifle River Recreation Area, visitors can hike wooded trails, fish 10 no-wake lakes and ponds including Grousehaven and Devoe, climb the observation tower along Ridge Road, or walk the swinging suspension bridge over the Rifle River. A 3-D archery range with 10 targets is open April through October for an additional fee.
In town, downtown West Branch offers outlet shopping and restaurants, and the Ogemaw County Fair grounds host the annual county fair each August.

The camping season centers on late spring through early fall. Many private campgrounds along the Rifle River operate roughly April through early November. Troll Landing Campground and Canoe Livery L.L.C. runs from April 1 through November 3, offering rustic sites on the Rifle River that can hold RVs up to 36 feet. Winter camping options are limited, and river liveries close once temperatures drop.
Summer, especially mid-June through mid-August, is peak season. Weekends fill early, particularly around Independence Day and the third weekend of August, when the Ogemaw County Fair runs in West Branch. Spring brings cool water, higher river flows and fewer crowds. Fall delivers hardwood color across the AuSable State Forest, with peak leaf change typically in late September and early October.
Hunting seasons run into fall on state forest land, so wearing hunter orange is wise on trails outside the state recreation area.
How to book campgrounds near Skidway Lake
Sites at Rifle River Recreation Area are booked through the state system. Campsites, lodging and harbor slips at Michigan state parks and recreation areas can be reserved up to six months to the date of arrival through MiDNRReservations.com or by calling 1-800-44-PARKS. The booking window rolls forward one day at a time, and popular summer weekends can fill within minutes of opening. A Recreation Passport is required on every vehicle entering a state park or recreation area.
Private campgrounds book directly. White's Canoe Livery and Campground, Troll Landing Campground and Canoe Livery L.L.C., Greenwood Campground and River View Campground and Canoe Livery each take reservations by phone or through their websites, with deposits usually required for holiday weekends. RV travelers should confirm site length, hookup amp rating (20, 30 or 50), and whether a dump station is on site before arrival.
What to expect on an RV trip to Skidway Lake
Expect a river-and-woods setting rather than a lakeside resort atmosphere. Access from the south is via I-75 exits 195 (Sterling) and 202 (M-33 toward Rose City); both routes handle towable and Class A RVs without issue. Roads inside the Rifle River Recreation Area are paved to the modern loops and gravel to the rustic loops.
Sites at private liveries tend to be grassy and wooded, with fire rings, picnic tables and shared bathhouses. Troll Landing provides hot showers, electrical sites with 20, 30 and 50 amp options, a camp store and a playground. Weekends can be lively with tubing groups; midweek stays are quieter.
Bring bug spray for late spring and early summer, layers for cool river-valley mornings, and a plan for firewood. Michigan restricts moving firewood between areas of the state, so buy certified heat-treated wood locally near your campground.
