Campgrounds and RV parks near South Gull Lake, MI

Water dominates the area. Eagle Lake at Fort Custer Recreation Area has a designated swimming beach along with fishing, kayaking, canoeing, and paddleboarding, with rentals available at the beach concession. Gun Lake, the largest lake at Yankee Springs, draws pontoon boats, anglers, and swimmers throughout summer, and a sandy beach sits within walking distance of the Gun Lake campground. Trail networks are extensive. Yankee Springs has roughly 30 miles of cross-country ski and hiking trails, 12 miles of mountain biking trails, and 9 miles of equestrian trails, and about 6 miles of the North Country Trail pass through the park. Points of interest include the Devil's Soupbowl, a glacially carved kettle formation, Graves Hill Overlook, and Civilian Conservation Corps era buildings. Inland lakes across Yankee Springs are known for panfish, northern pike, muskie, and bass.

The camping season in southwest Michigan runs heaviest from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Booking online well ahead is strongly recommended for summer weekends, while weekdays usually have openings. The Michigan DNR reservation system takes bookings on a rolling six-month window, which is essential for lake-view sites at Gun Lake and the modern loops at Fort Custer. Spring brings variable weather and lower crowds, with wildflowers along Yankee Springs trails and cooler paddling conditions. Fall is quieter and offers strong foliage into October, though modern water systems are typically shut off in the shoulder seasons. The Fort Custer campground has 219 electric sites, but water at individual sites is not available once freezing weather sets in. Winter remains a legitimate season for cold-weather visitors. The rugged terrain, bogs, marshes, lakes, and streams across Yankee Springs support cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and ice fishing. Expect limited services and no potable water at most sites during this stretch.

State park check-in and quiet-hour rules are consistent across the area. Camping check-in starts at 3 p.m. and checkout is 1 p.m. At Yankee Springs, quiet hours run 11 p.m. to 8 a.m. and the campground office is open 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. from May 15 through Labor Day. Alcohol rules are strict in peak season. Alcoholic beverages are not permitted in the Gun Lake day-use area from April 1 through Labor Day unless the park manager has granted written authorization through an event permit. Pets must stay on a six-foot leash at all times. Expect wooded, semi-modern sites with electric hookups at the modern loops and vault toilets at rustic areas. Because invasive insects and diseases can hitch a ride on firewood, hauling firewood even a short distance is discouraged; purchase only certified heat-treated firewood sold in state parks, local stores, and roadside stands.
