Camping near St. Joseph, Michigan
St. Joseph sits on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan in Berrien County, about a 45-minute drive north of South Bend, Indiana. The surrounding coastline is defined by tall wooded dunes, wide sand beaches, and the fruit-belt farmland just inland. RV travelers use the area as a base for beach days, orchard and winery visits, and short drives to South Haven and New Buffalo.
Campground options range from full-service private parks to a municipal beach campground and a Michigan state park. Eden Springs Park at the House of David operates year-round, featuring 42 full-service RV sites and 3 seasonal primitive tent sites, with a large bathroom facility and shaded grounds under mature trees. The Coloma / St. Joseph KOA Holiday sits on a wooded property just inland from the lake.
Closer to the lakeshore, Weko Beach Campground offers a sandy shoreline on Lake Michigan with 68 campsites and rustic cabins minutes from the beach. Warren Dunes State Park has more than 200 sites, including tent-only sites, RV sites with electric hookups, and three mini cabins. Inland, Dune Lake Campground rounds out the mix with a small private lake and family sites.
Things to do around St. Joseph
The beach is the main draw. Warren Dunes State Park offers three miles of sandy shoreline along Lake Michigan, where visitors can swim, hang glide over the dunes with a permit, or climb Tower Hill, plus use six miles of hiking trails. At Weko Beach, the playing of Taps at sunset is a tradition that runs every night from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
On the water, Weko Beach has a small-craft boat launch suited for kayaks, canoes, and small fishing boats, and kayak and stand-up paddleboard rentals are available on-site in season.
Inland, the Coloma and Watervliet area is fruit-belt country with orchards, U-pick farms, and vineyards along the Southwest Michigan Wine Trail. The historical park adjacent to Eden Springs offers vintage miniature train rides on summer weekends, and downtown St. Joseph adds the Silver Beach Carousel and a walkable shopping district.

The camping season along this stretch of Lake Michigan runs roughly from May through mid-October. Weko Beach offers 68 campsites and rustic cabins available May through mid-October, and Dune Lake Campground operates on a similar summer schedule. Warren Dunes State Park is open year-round for day use, but modern campground reservation demand is heaviest between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
July and August bring the warmest lake temperatures, the busiest beaches, and the tightest campground availability. Weekends fill first, and holiday windows around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day typically book to capacity as soon as sites open.
Late spring and early fall are quieter and cooler, with orchard blossoms in May and apple, peach, and grape harvests running from August into October. Winter is cold and snowy, with lake-effect snow common along the shore. Most seasonal campgrounds are closed by late October, so off-season RV travelers should confirm which parks stay open, including Eden Springs, which operates year-round.
How to book a campsite near St. Joseph
Warren Dunes is booked through the Michigan state system. Sites at Warren Dunes State Park are reserved via the Michigan DNR reservation portal at MiDNRReservations.com, with campsite reservations opening six months in advance. Campsites and cabins can fill up quickly for summer and holiday weekends. Reservations can also be made by calling 1-800-44-PARKS (1-800-447-2757), and a Recreation Passport is required to visit all Michigan state parks.
Weko Beach reservations can be made online at bridgman.org or by email to the campground office. The Coloma / St. Joseph KOA Holiday books directly through the KOA website or by phone, and Eden Springs and Dune Lake accept reservations through their own sites or by calling the office. For summer travel, plan to book two to three months out; holiday weekends should be reserved as far ahead as the property allows.
What to expect on-site
Expect a mix of hookup levels. Eden Springs offers pull-through gravel sites with electric, water, and sewer hookups suitable for a range of RV sizes, including 30-amp and 50-amp service. The Coloma / St. Joseph KOA Holiday sites include full hookups and typical KOA amenities such as a pool and general store. Dune Lake Campground offers modern sites with electric and water, plus primitive tent sites.
Beachfront sites come with sand-related trade-offs. Weko Beach is a City of Bridgman park with sites spread across RV loops and a primitive area, and site terrain varies with several sandy or sloped pads, so bringing levelers is a good idea. Maximum camping-unit size at Weko is 30 feet.
At Warren Dunes, swimming is only permitted in designated areas and is at your own risk, with no lifeguard patrol. Pets are allowed north of the northernmost swim buoy at the beach, providing 2.5 miles of shoreline open to pets, and must always be on a 6-foot leash.

Michigan does not require a commercial or special license for recreational vehicles under 26,000 pounds, which covers virtually every motorhome, campervan, travel trailer, and fifth wheel on RVezy. You'll also need to be 25 or older to book, and RVezy verifies your ID securely through the platform during checkout. Visiting from outside the US? An International Driving Permit paired with your home license works perfectly. Most first-time renters are surprised by how simple it is: just show up at pickup, complete the host's walkthrough, and you're set for your St. Joseph RV trip.

Every RV rental in St. Joseph, MI on RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the road with real peace of mind. In rare cases like natural disasters or major weather events, additional flexibility may apply. Full details live in the RVezy Help Center so you can review exact timelines before confirming. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best Silver Beach weekend dates, then relax knowing the policy has your back if plans change.

Winter visits are possible with a cold-weather-ready rig, but expect lake-effect snow and average January lows around 20°F. Pro tip: target the Blossomtime Festival in early May, one of the Midwest's longest-running multi-community festivals, when the orchards bloom along the M-63 corridor.
weather.gov/iwx/I've never driven an RV before, what should I expect in St. Joseph?
First time renting an RV? St. Joseph is one of the friendliest places in Michigan to start. Every RVezy host provides a full walkthrough at pickup, showing you how to operate the slide-outs, water system, generator, and dump valves, so you'll never feel left in the dark. Local roads like M-63 along the lakefront, US-31, and I-94 are wide, well-marked, and easy to navigate even in a Class C motorhome. If you're nervous about driving in downtown St. Joseph (it's small but has some tight harbor streets), choose a smaller campervan or ask your host about delivery. Pro tip: do a slow practice loop through a large parking area before heading out to get comfortable with turning and braking.
michigan.gov/mdotWhat happens if something goes wrong with my RV on the road?
You're covered. Every RV rental in St. Joseph, MI booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you're stuck on I-94 near Benton Harbor or camping near Grand Mere State Park. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my St. Joseph RV rental to Chicago or across state lines?
Yes, interstate trips are totally doable and one of the best perks of an RV road trip from St. Joseph. Chicago is about 95 miles southwest via I-94 (roughly 90 minutes without traffic), making it a popular weekend escape route. Indiana Dunes National Park is only about 60 miles away, Sleeping Bear Dunes is around 230 miles north, and Mackinaw City is reachable in roughly 5 hours. Cross-border trips into Canada may be possible with some hosts depending on insurance, so message the host directly through the listing to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: avoid I-94 westbound on Sunday evenings in summer, Chicago return traffic can be brutal.
nps.gov/indu/index.htmHow much should I budget for fuel on an RV trip from St. Joseph?
Fuel is one of the biggest variables, but easy to estimate. Michigan gas prices typically run close to the national average. Campervans (Class B) get the best mileage at roughly 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 MPG, and larger Class A rigs come in around 7 to 10 MPG. For a 3-day St. Joseph RV trip with about 250 miles of driving in a Class C, you'd budget roughly $80 to $130 in fuel depending on current pump prices. Pro tip: check GasBuddy or apps for live prices, gas is often cheaper at stations along Niles Avenue than at the I-94 highway exits.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near St. Joseph?
For summer weekends, book your campground the moment the reservation window opens: sites near St. Joseph fill incredibly fast. Michigan state parks like Warren Dunes and Grand Mere open reservations six months in advance through MiDNRReservations.com or by phone. Private parks like the Coloma/St. Joseph KOA and Weko Beach Campground often book 3 to 4 months out for July and August. Shoulder season (May, September, October) is much more forgiving, often available 2 to 3 weeks ahead. Pro tip: if you miss the Warren Dunes booking window, set a calendar alert for 8:00 a.m. on the date sites open six months from your target weekend, weekday inventory can also free up due to cancellations.
midnrreservations.com/What are local driving conditions like in and around St. Joseph?
Driving an RV around St. Joseph is refreshingly easy. The area uses wide highways like I-94, US-31, and the scenic M-63 Blue Star Highway, all comfortable for motorhomes and trailers. Watch for lake-effect snow squalls in late fall and winter, which can dramatically reduce visibility within minutes near the shoreline. Summer brings heavy weekend traffic on I-94 between Chicago and southwest Michigan, especially Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons. Downtown St. Joseph has a few narrow bluff streets near State Street and Lake Boulevard, so big rigs should stick to Niles Avenue or US-31 when possible. Pro tip: check MDOT's Mi Drive map for live traffic and construction updates before heading out, especially during summer road work season.

Deposits typically range from $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV's value and host preferences, and they're released back to you within a few days after dropoff, assuming the RV is returned in the same condition. Pro tip: do a quick video walkthrough at both pickup and return, this gives you and your host a clear record and makes deposit refunds smooth, so you can focus on enjoying Silver Beach instead of paperwork.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in St. Joseph during the winter months?
Yes, winter RV rentals in St. Joseph are available and offer a magical side of Lake Michigan most travelers never see: think ice-shelf formations along the pier, snowy lighthouses, and quiet beaches. Look for listings tagged as four-season ready, which means they have heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and reliable furnaces to handle Michigan's January average lows around 20°F. Many hosts also include shore power adapters so you can plug into 30-amp service at year-round parks or stay on private property with full hookups. Pro tip: pair your winter St. Joseph RV trip with skiing at a nearby ski area or ice fishing on inland lakes, and message your host for cold-weather operating tips before pickup.
