Campgrounds and RV parks near Stony Point, MI

Lake Erie drives most trips. The park protects more than 500 acres of Great Lakes marsh and restored lake plain prairie habitat and is well known for its access to walleye and perch fisheries. Anglers launch from William C. Sterling State Park or nearby marinas, and shore fishing is productive along the piers and lagoons. Families with kids often split time between the beach, the marsh boardwalks, and paved trails. The River Raisin Heritage Trail connects the park to downtown Monroe, local parks and trails, and the River Raisin National Battlefield Park. Kayak paddling is popular on the calm lagoons and protected Lake Erie shoreline in summer. Across the border, Maumee Bay adds a nature center and a 57-acre inland lake in the park suitable for sailing, canoeing, and other non-motorized boat use. Toledo, Cabela's in Dundee, and the Detroit metro are all within an hour.

The core RV season on western Lake Erie runs from late April through October. Late spring brings the region's biggest event for birders: the Magee Marsh and Maumee Bay warbler migration in May fills area campgrounds well in advance. Summer is prime beach and fishing season, with walleye action strong from spring through fall and perch picking up in late summer. Summer weekends and holidays are the busiest windows. Sites at Sterling State Park and Maumee Bay commonly book out months ahead for July, August, and Labor Day, so flexibility on dates or a midweek stay helps. Weekdays and shoulder-season trips in May, September, and early October usually offer easier availability, cooler nights, and fewer bugs. Winter operations vary by campground. Maumee Bay State Park Campground is open year-round. From November 1 to April 30, showerhouses are closed; two family restrooms are heated and include shower facilities, and full hook-up sites do not have water at the site. Some private parks near Stony Point stay open year-round for RVers, while Michigan state park facilities typically scale back after mid-October.

Terrain around Stony Point is flat lakeplain, easy for larger rigs and towables. Sterling State Park offers a modern lakefront campground with electric sites, mostly paved pads, and a beach house in the day-use area. All sites have either 20- or 30-amp service, with 50-amp service available on 76 of the sites, plus a sanitation station. Private parks in the area lean full-service, with pull-through sites, 20/30/50 amp electric, sewer, and city water common at the larger resorts. Cell service is generally strong across Monroe County, and grocery, fuel, and RV supplies are close at hand in Monroe and Toledo. Expect some ambient noise. Freight rail lines and I-75 cross the area, and the Fermi nuclear plant cooling towers are visible from parts of the Lake Erie shoreline. Biting insects can be heavy near marsh edges from June through August, so bring repellent and screens.
