Camping near Union City, Michigan
Union City sits in Branch County in southern Michigan, at the confluence of the St. Joseph and Coldwater rivers. The village puts RV travelers within a short drive of the Coldwater chain of lakes, the Randall-Morrison chain, and paddling water on the St. Joseph. Interstate 69 runs a few miles east, giving quick access from Indiana, the Detroit metro, and Chicago.
Campground options in the area lean toward mid-sized family resorts rather than public state park loops. Waffle Farm Campgrounds, at 790 N. Union City Road in Coldwater, is the largest nearby operation, with a main camp of 225 sites and a seasonal camp of 151 sites. Turtle Lake Nudist Resort, at 2101 9 Mile Road in Union City, is a clothing-optional resort in central Michigan with RV sites, rental units, and tent camping. Harbor Cove RV Resort and the two En Gedi Campground River Resort listings round out the closest choices, with En Gedi Campground River Resort and Canoe Livery pairing river camping with paddling access.
Most bookings are made directly with each privately owned park by phone or through the park's own website, not through Recreation.gov.
Things to do around Union City
Fishing drives most trips here. The Randall-Morrison Chain covers seven pristine lakes that span over 1,074 acres, making it a haven for fishing enthusiasts, and all seven lakes are noted in southern Michigan for their excellent fishing, with bluegill, crappie, perch, largemouth bass, and northern pike as the standard targets.
Paddlers use En Gedi Campground River Resort and Canoe Livery to run sections of the St. Joseph River without arranging a separate shuttle. Turtle Lake Nudist Resort offers indoor and outdoor pools, a hot tub, tennis, pickleball, putt putt, and a small beach on its private lagoon. Off-site, the Coldwater Country area covers golf courses, the historic Tibbits Opera House in downtown Coldwater, and Coldwater Lake State Park for day use.

Southern Michigan runs a short, busy camping season. Most private parks around Union City open in mid-April and close by mid-October, matching the pattern Waffle Farm Campgrounds publishes for its April 15 to October 15 operating window. Turtle Lake Nudist Resort markets year-round stays, with indoor amenities that carry through winter.
July and August are peak. Weekends fill weeks in advance around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day, and holiday events at Turtle Lake and bass tournaments on the Randall-Morrison chain tighten availability further. Waffle Farm's location on the chain draws steady summer traffic from anglers.
Shoulder-season trips in May, June, and September trade warmer lake swimming for open sites, lower mosquito pressure, and easier fishing access. October brings hardwood color along the St. Joseph River corridor, but overnight temperatures drop quickly and many seasonal loops shut off water service before month's end.

How to book a site near Union City
The Union City area is almost entirely privately owned campgrounds, so reservations run through each park directly rather than a central state system. Waffle Farm Campgrounds runs its own online reservation system for securing a spot, and phone booking is available at the office number listed on its site.
Turtle Lake Nudist Resort takes bookings by phone and through its website, and first-time visitors are typically given an orientation on arrival. En Gedi Campground River Resort and Harbor Cove RV Resort take reservations directly; call ahead for river-site availability if a canoe or kayak trip is part of the plan.
For state-run alternatives in the wider region, reservations for campsites, lodging and harbors can be booked up to six months in advance through the Michigan DNR's central reservation portal.
What to expect on the ground
Expect small-town, family-run parks rather than resort chains. Waffle Farm has expanded to 376 sites, spread over more than a mile and a quarter of water frontage and 60 acres of shaded and open areas, with 240 seasonal sites, 30 waterfront sites, 80 off-lake sites, and 25 primitive sites. Big rigs will find full hookups at the lakefront and seasonal loops; tent campers get quieter primitive sections.
The campground has many permanent campers, which may not appeal to those seeking a more natural, secluded experience, and sites are relatively close together with reasonable spacing. Cell coverage is generally reliable on the major carriers, and camp stores handle basic supplies.
Turtle Lake Nudist Resort is a genuine naturist property, not a general resort with a clothing-optional section, so review the rules before booking a family trip there.
