Campgrounds and RV parks near Waldron, MI

Water recreation drives most trips in this area. Harrison Lake reaches 15 feet deep and supports bluegill, largemouth bass, northern pike, crappie, and catfish, and a designated swimming beach provides summer relief while unlimited horsepower electric motors and non-motorized boats allow quiet exploration of the water. A 3.5-mile trail circles the lake through the surrounding woodlands, and additional recreation includes basketball and volleyball courts, soccer fields, playgrounds, horseshoe pits, and disc golf. At Lake Hudson Recreation Area, the draw is a large no-wake lake and dark skies. The lake is known for muskellunge and also supports largemouth bass, crappie, and walleye, with paddling and shore fishing popular on the quiet water. Lake Hudson was designated a dark sky preserve in 1993, the first in Michigan's state park system, and outdoor lighting inside the preserve is shielded and minimized to protect night-sky viewing. Hudson, about seven miles west of the recreation area, has a grocery store, restaurants, and a historic downtown for supply runs and rest-day outings.

The prime RV season runs late spring through early fall. Lake Hudson Recreation Area is open for the season April 1 through November 30, and yurts and camper cabins at Harrison Lake State Park operate seasonally from May through October. Weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day fill quickly, and lakefront sites are the first to go. Spring can be wet and cool, with muddy site pads possible after storms. Summer brings warm days, humid nights, and the region's busiest camping weekends. Bug pressure peaks in June and early July, so screens and repellent are worth packing. Fall shoulder season is popular with anglers and hunters; the native grass fields at Lake Hudson support a pheasant restoration program, making this a popular fall hunting destination, so campers should confirm season dates before booking. Winter camping is limited. Harrison Lake State Park keeps a limited number of electric sites open November through April, with showers and the dump station closed during that period. Lake Hudson's campground is closed in winter, though the dark sky preserve remains open year-round.

Sites in this area range from full-hookup RV pads to rustic electric-only camping. At Harrison Lake State Park, electric hookups serve most sites, accommodating RVs up to 68 feet, though water hookups remain limited; lake-side sites offer water views through strips of woods, while others back up to cornfields. Lake Hudson is more basic. Each campsite includes 20/30 amp electrical hookups, a fire ring, and a picnic table; facilities include vault toilets and potable water via a hand pump, and there are no showers or dump station on-site. The nearest shopping and services are in Hudson, approximately 7 miles west of the park, so travelers should arrive stocked. Cell coverage can be limited in the area, with some visitors reporting no service for portions of their drive. Expect a family-oriented, farmland setting rather than a wilderness experience. Larger rigs should call ahead about interior loop access at both state parks.
