Camping near West Monroe, Michigan
West Monroe sits in Monroe County in southeast Michigan, minutes from the Lake Erie shoreline and roughly an hour south of Detroit. The area draws RV travellers looking for a Great Lakes base with easy interstate access, working farmland scenery, and short drives to both Toledo and the Detroit metro. I-75 runs through the county, which keeps arrivals straightforward for larger rigs.
The closest full-service RV options cluster along the Lake Erie corridor. Harbortown RV Resort operates on Laplaisance Road with pull-through sites and 20/30/50-amp hookups, while Camp Lord Willing Management RV Park and Campground runs year-round with full hookups. River Raisin Marina and Campground sits along the lower river near downtown Monroe.
For a public-land stay, William C. Sterling State Park is the only Michigan state park on Lake Erie, with a modern campground, boating access, and about a mile of sandy shoreline. Paddlers heading upriver can also reach River Raisin Canoe Livery near Dundee for canoe and kayak trips on the river.
Things to do near West Monroe
Lake Erie access drives most trips. Shoreline and off-shore anglers target walleye and perch at William C. Sterling State Park, which also has a swim beach, a boating access site, and kayak rentals at the campground office between Memorial Day and Labor Day. The park protects more than 500 acres of Great Lakes marsh and restored lakeplain prairie, with over seven miles of biking and hiking trails.
History-minded travellers can walk to River Raisin National Battlefield Park, connected to Sterling by the River Raisin Heritage Trail. Paddlers can rent canoes and kayaks or arrange a shuttle from River Raisin Canoe Livery upstream near Dundee. Cabela's in Dundee and the Mall of Monroe cover rainy-day stops.

Sterling State Park's modern campground typically operates from spring through late fall, and Michigan DNR campsites and lodging can be reserved up to six months in advance of arrival through MiDNRReservations.com. Summer weekends at Sterling fill quickly and cancellation scans through third-party tools are common.
Shoulder seasons offer easier bookings. Spring brings walleye runs and cooler paddling on the River Raisin, though rain is frequent and mosquitoes ramp up around the marsh in early summer. Fall delivers colour along the river corridor and lighter campground traffic after Labor Day.
Winter narrows the options. Harbortown RV Resort and Camp Lord Willing Management RV Park and Campground both stay open year-round, making the area one of the few Great Lakes stops where RV travellers can hook up in the off-season.
