Camping near Ashland, Mississippi
Ashland is the seat of Benton County in north Mississippi, roughly 18 miles east of Holly Springs and about an hour southeast of Memphis. The town sits in rolling hill country near Holly Springs National Forest, which spans about 155,000 acres across several north Mississippi counties and encompasses small lakes, hardwood stands, and pine plantations established by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. That mix of public land and quiet rural roads makes the area a practical base for RV travelers who want lake access and forest trails without the crowds of larger destinations.
RV options range from small-town parks close to Ashland proper to a full-service state park campground with hookups. Ashland RV Connections and Travelers Camper Park Campground sit near town for quick overnight stops, while Cherokee Landing Campground and Big Buck Camping Resort offer longer-stay setups. Front - Wall Doxey State Park, about a half-hour drive west near Holly Springs, is the main hookup campground in the region and anchors most weekend trip plans.
Things to do around Ashland
Wall Doxey State Park is the primary outdoor draw within easy driving distance. The park centers on a 60-acre spring-fed lake with fishing for largemouth bass, bream, and catfish, along with boat rentals and a 2.5-mile nature trail that loops the shoreline. Two 18-hole disc golf courses, Spring Creek and Turkey Hollow, plus playgrounds and open recreation fields make it workable for families with kids.
Holly Springs National Forest surrounds much of the county and includes Chewalla Lake, a 260-acre no-wake lake with a hiking trail, sandy swim beach, and boat ramp, plus the more remote Puskus Lake for quiet paddling and shore fishing. Historic downtown Holly Springs adds antebellum architecture and small museums, and Oxford and the University of Mississippi are roughly an hour south for a day trip.

North Mississippi has a humid subtropical climate with mild winters, hot summers, and rain in every month. Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV travel: daytime highs sit in the 60s and 70s, humidity is manageable, and lake temperatures at Wall Doxey and Chewalla warm enough for swimming by late May. April is typically the wettest month, so plan for at least one washout day on longer spring trips.
Summer brings consistent highs near 90 with afternoon thunderstorms and high humidity. Shaded sites and full electrical hookups for air conditioning matter more than at other times of year. This is peak season for state park reservations, especially on weekends and around July 4.
Winter is generally mild but damp. Highs average around 50 and lows in the 30s, with occasional freezes and rare light snow, averaging about 2 inches per year. Some seasonal amenities close, but Wall Doxey State Park is open year round.
How to book near Ashland
Wall Doxey State Park is operated by the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks, and campsites are reservable up to 12 months in advance through the Mississippi State Parks reservation system on ReserveAmerica. The minimum age to make a reservation is 21, and one camping unit is allowed per pad. Some sites may be held for first-come, first-served arrivals.
Chewalla Lake Recreation Area in Holly Springs National Forest books through Recreation.gov, with reservations available up to 6 months in advance.
Private parks in the Ashland area, including Ashland RV Connections, Cherokee Landing Campground, Travelers Camper Park Campground, and Big Buck Camping Resort, book directly with the operator. Call ahead for holiday weekends and hunting season.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a rural setting with narrow county roads, limited cell coverage in the forest interior, and long stretches between fuel stops once off U.S. 78. Grocery runs and propane are easiest in Holly Springs or Ripley rather than Ashland itself. Bring insect repellent from late spring through early fall: mosquitoes, ticks, and chiggers are common in the hardwood bottoms.
Wall Doxey RV loops offer hookups with a central dump station and bathhouses with hot showers. Sites are shaded and set among mature timber, which can limit satellite reception at some pads. Wildlife is active, including deer, wild turkey, and the occasional coyote at night. Firewood should be sourced locally to reduce the spread of tree pests, and Mississippi state parks prohibit fireworks, portable generators, and metal detectors inside campgrounds.
