Campgrounds and RV parks near Burnsville, MS

Water activities dominate the area. Pickwick Lake supports sailing, swimming, skiing, and fishing for smallmouth bass, crappie, bream, catfish, sauger, and walleye, with a marina at JP Coleman State Park. A Mississippi fishing license is required for anglers between the ages of 16 and 65 on the Mississippi side of the lake. On land, Tishomingo State Park has rock outcroppings, waterfalls, a swinging pedestrian bridge, and canoeing on Bear Creek during the warm season. The Natchez Trace Parkway runs directly through the park, giving RV travelers easy access to scenic driving and short walks. History travelers can reach Shiloh National Military Park in roughly 30 to 40 minutes from Burnsville, and the park is noted as one of the best-preserved Civil War sites in the country.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV camping in the Burnsville area. Daytime highs are moderate, humidity is lower than in midsummer, and both Mississippi state parks stay open. Spring also brings the highest reservation demand around holiday weekends, and the Bear Creek float trip at Tishomingo State Park should be booked well in advance. Summer is hot and muggy, with highs regularly in the low 90s and warm evenings. Lake water temperatures are comfortable for swimming, and bass and panfish feed actively along the shoreline. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, and tropical systems can occasionally push moisture inland from the Gulf during late summer. Winter is short but wet, and December is typically among the wettest months. JP Coleman State Park and Tishomingo State Park operate year-round. On the Tennessee side, the Main Campground at Pickwick Landing State Park is currently closed due to weather damage and upcoming renovations, while the Bruton Branch Campground remains open. Pickwick Dam Campground normally runs from mid-March through mid-November but is currently closed following damage from Winter Storm Fern.

Roads into these parks are often narrow and winding. At JP Coleman State Park, hillside sites and access roads require careful maneuvering, and posted vehicle length limits should be checked before booking a specific site. Tishomingo State Park roads are mostly paved but have low tree limbs that can be tight for taller rigs. Expect a mix of hookup levels: full or electric and water at JP Coleman, water and electric at Tishomingo and at the open loops of Pickwick Landing, and level pads with hookups at Pickwick Dam Campground when it reopens. Portable generators are prohibited in Mississippi state parks, and fires are restricted to designated rings. Buy firewood locally or in-park to avoid moving pests. Cell service is generally usable near the lakes but can be spotty deeper in Tishomingo State Park and along Bear Creek. Bring leveling blocks for uneven pads.
