Campgrounds and RV parks near Cleary, MS

The Ross Barnett Reservoir is the main outdoor draw, with boat ramps, fishing piers, and paved paths that connect to Timberlake Campground. Anglers target largemouth bass, crappie, and catfish, and the reservoir hosts tournaments through much of the year. In Jackson, LeFleur's Bluff State Park sits alongside the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science and the Mississippi Children's Museum, both reachable without moving the RV. Mayes Lake offers bass, bream, catfish, and crappie for fishing, with a launch available for those bringing their own boats, though only electric trolling motors are allowed. Families staying at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort typically build days around on-site pools, splash pads, and themed events. North of Cleary in Flora, the Mississippi Petrified Forest offers a self-guided hike through a 36 million year old petrified forest. A nature trail with informational signs runs through the site, with birdwatching and wildlife viewing along the way.

Central Mississippi has a humid subtropical climate, so the shoulder seasons tend to be the most comfortable for RV travel. Spring, from March through May, brings mild days, blooming dogwoods, and higher rainfall. Fall, from late September into November, cools off gradually and delivers some of the driest, clearest weather of the year. Jackson experiences a humid subtropical climate, characterized by hot summers and cool winters, with rainfall abundant throughout the year and heavy downpours and afternoon thunderstorms in the warmer months. Heat indexes routinely climb well above the actual temperature, so shaded sites and reliable air conditioning matter. This is peak season for reservoir recreation and for family campgrounds, and weekend sites fill early. Winter is short and generally mild, with occasional cold snaps and rain rather than snow. Most private parks near Cleary stay open year-round, and LeFleur's Bluff State Park operates through the winter as well. Severe weather season peaks in spring and again in late fall, so travelers should keep a weather radio or phone alert active during storm watches.

Sites near Cleary vary widely in surface and layout. At Mississippi Petrified Forest Campground, the small camping area has full hookups but dirt pads, hookups may require additional lengths of hoses or cords, most sites have picnic tables and fire rings, and only a few sites are suitable for big rigs. Travelers with larger coaches should confirm site dimensions before booking. Cell coverage is generally strong across Rankin and Hinds counties, and most parks offer WiFi with mixed reliability. Expect insects in the warmer months, especially mosquitoes near the reservoir and at wooded sites. Bug spray, screen rooms, and evening awning lights help. Grocery, fuel, and RV supply stops are easy to reach along US-49, I-20, and I-55. Jackson is the closest full-service city for propane, service work, and dump station access if a chosen site lacks sewer hookups.
