Camping near Clinton, Mississippi
Clinton sits just west of Jackson along Interstate 20 in central Mississippi, putting RV travelers within a short drive of both the state capital and Vicksburg. The area's humid subtropical climate keeps campgrounds open year-round, and most nearby parks cater to full-size rigs with paved or level pads and full hookups.
Options range from urban state park camping to private lakeside resorts. LeFleur's Bluff State Park sits on 305 acres along the Pearl River within Jackson's city limits, operated by the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks. Timberlake Campground offers a setting on the shores of the Ross Barnett Reservoir in Brandon, and is operated by the Pearl River Valley Water Supply District, while Askew's Landing RV Campground offers a lakeside setting off I-20 between Jackson and Vicksburg.
Smaller properties round out the mix. Mississippi Petrified Forest Campground in Flora adjoins a National Natural Landmark and offers a compact set of full-hookup sites in a wooded setting. Wendy Oaks RV Resort in Florence, south of Jackson, is a small park built around an 8-acre lake with full hookup RV sites.
Things to do around Clinton
The Mississippi Petrified Forest is the region's signature natural attraction. It is one of only two petrified forests in the eastern United States, with a half-mile interpretive nature trail passing fossilized logs and a small museum and gift shop on site.
Inside Jackson, LeFleur's Bluff State Park bundles several family activities in one stop: an 18-hole disc golf course, nature trails, a playground, and fishing on 50-acre Mayes Lake for bass, bream, catfish, and crappie. The Mississippi Museum of Natural Science and the Mississippi Children's Museum are located within the park.
Water-based recreation is easy to find. Timberlake offers a pool, tennis courts, a private boat launch, and full hookups on the Ross Barnett Reservoir, and Askew's Landing offers kayaking, pedal boating, a swimming pool, and lake fishing.

Central Mississippi has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and mild winters. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, with daytime highs generally in the 70s and low 80s Fahrenheit and lower humidity than midsummer. April is typically among the wettest months, so plan for occasional heavy downpours and thunderstorms.
Summer camping is doable but demanding. June through August daytime highs average around 92°F with high humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms are common. Sites with shade and 50-amp service for air conditioning are worth prioritizing. Gnats and mosquitoes can be heavy near lakes and the Pearl River, especially at dusk.
Fall is the driest and often the most pleasant stretch, with cooler nights arriving by late October. Winter is the quiet season. Freezes occur but heavy snow is rare, and campgrounds generally stay open. LeFleur's Bluff and other Pearl River sites are subject to flooding after heavy rains, so check conditions before arrival during wet stretches from December through spring.
How to book near Clinton
LeFleur's Bluff State Park takes reservations through the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks reservation system at reserve.mdwfp.com, which handles all Mississippi state park campgrounds. Reservations must be made at least 48 hours prior to the arrival date and can be made up to 13 months in advance. The park has 28 developed sites with water and 30-amp electric hookups plus roughly 30 primitive tent sites.
Private campgrounds each use their own booking channels. Askew's Landing RV Campground accepts online reservations through Campspot, and Wendy Oaks RV Resort books directly through its website or by phone. Mississippi Petrified Forest Campground takes reservations by phone, and Timberlake Campground accommodates short-term and monthly stays, with nightly rentals available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Summer weekends, holidays, and Jackson event dates fill quickly at the closest parks, so booking early is recommended for LeFleur's Bluff and for lakeside sites.
What to expect near Clinton
Most campgrounds near Clinton offer full or partial hookups with 30 and 50-amp electric service. Timberlake offers pull-through and back-in sites with concrete pads and spacious sites with electric hookups, and Wendy Oaks RV Resort accommodates big rigs on level pads. Mississippi Petrified Forest Campground has a smaller footprint with a limited number of sites suitable for larger coaches.
Setting varies more than amenities. Urban sounds carry into LeFleur's Bluff, particularly at night, given its location inside Jackson. Timberlake is a large park where a portion of sites are held by longer-term residents. Askew's Landing and Wendy Oaks are quieter, family-run properties with on-site lakes.
Expect shaded, wooded pads at most locations, along with bathhouses, dump stations, and laundry. Cell service is generally reliable across the metro. Bring insect repellent, water hoses long enough for older utility pedestals, and leveling blocks for dirt or grass pads.
