Collins camping overview
Collins sits in Covington County along U.S. Highway 49 in south-central Mississippi, roughly 30 miles north of Hattiesburg. The town is best known to outdoor travelers for its proximity to Okatoma Creek, one of the most popular paddling destinations in south Mississippi, which becomes navigable in the vicinity of Collins. RV travelers use Collins as a base for paddling, small-town stops along Highway 49, and easy access to the larger Hattiesburg metro area.
Most RV parks in the area are privately owned rather than state or federal. Nearby options include Four Season's RV Park and Sleepy Hollow RV Park closer to Collins itself, Shady Cove RV Park in the surrounding countryside, the Hattiesburg/Okatoma KOA Holiday to the south near the Okatoma, and Mimosa Landing Campground to the southwest on the Pearl River near Columbia.
The KOA sits on sixty acres with three fishing lakes and wooded walking paths, while Mimosa Landing sits on the edge of the Pearl River with direct river access for fishing and kayaking. Together they give travelers a mix of full-hookup RV sites, cabins, and water-oriented recreation within an easy drive of Collins.
Things to do near Collins
Paddling is the signature activity. Okatoma Creek offers several Class I falls and chutes, has many flat spots, is easy to paddle, and boats can be portaged past the whitewater when needed. Outfitters based in Seminary and Sanford run canoe and kayak rentals, shuttles, and camping facilities, with the Seminary-to-Sanford float the region's best-known trip.
Fishing is available on the KOA's stocked lakes and on the Pearl River at Mimosa Landing, which also has a swimming pool, basketball and volleyball courts, and a billiards room. Day trips reach Hattiesburg to the south for shopping, dining, and the Longleaf Trace trail, and Laurel to the east, known as the filming location of HGTV's Home Town.

The Collins area has a humid subtropical climate. The most comfortable months are spring, from March through May, and fall, from late September through November, when temperatures are moderate and humidity is lower. Wildflowers and dogwoods emerge in March and April, and river flows on the Okatoma are typically strong from spring rain, which outfitters cite as the best paddling water.
Summer brings heat and humidity, with average highs in the low 90s Fahrenheit from June through August. Rainfall is abundant year-round, though October tends to be the driest month, and heavy afternoon thunderstorms are common in the warmer months. Paddling continues through summer, but campers should start river trips early to avoid midday storms.
Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, with peak risk in August and September. Tropical systems moving inland from the Gulf can bring damaging wind and heavy rain to Collins even though the town sits well north of the coast. Winter is mild but wet, with the coldest stretch in January.
How to book campgrounds near Collins
Campgrounds in the Collins area are privately operated, so reservations go directly through each property rather than a government portal such as Recreation.gov. The Hattiesburg/Okatoma KOA Holiday takes bookings through the KOA website and app, which handle cabin, tent, and RV site selection. Four Season's RV Park, Shady Cove RV Park, Sleepy Hollow RV Park, and Mimosa Landing Campground generally accept phone and email reservations, and several list availability on third-party RV booking sites.
For peak weekends in spring and fall, book several weeks ahead, particularly near the Okatoma. Paddling outfitters typically require reservations and a credit card to hold a spot, with cancellation cutoffs the day before the trip. Confirm rig length, hookup type, and pet policy when booking.
What to expect at campgrounds near Collins
Expect wooded, piney terrain and small-town access rather than resort-style amenities. Sites at the Hattiesburg/Okatoma KOA Holiday tend to be level with full hookups and cabins available, along with a swimming pool, dog park, and three on-site fishing lakes. Mimosa Landing Campground features 77 full-hookup campsites that are big-rig friendly, with 14 pull-through sites, plus a pool, basketball and volleyball courts, and a billiards room.
Cell coverage is generally usable along the U.S. 49 corridor but can thin on back roads. Wi-Fi quality varies by park. Summer campers should plan for mosquitoes, ticks, and afternoon thunderstorms, and pack bug spray, a surge protector, and rain gear. Grocery, fuel, and hardware stops are easy in Collins and Hattiesburg.
