Campgrounds near Decatur, Mississippi
Decatur sits in Newton County in east-central Mississippi, surrounded by piney woods, reservoirs, and river bottoms in the Pascagoula River Basin. Turkey Creek Water Park Pat Harrison Waterway District is the closest option, located off Highway 15 about five miles southwest of town on a 250-acre lake, with fully developed camping spurs, water and electric hookups, and a dump station. Okatibbee Water Park lies northwest of Meridian on a 3,800-acre reservoir and offers camping spurs with 50-amp service, cabins, and a 25-room motel. Dunns Falls Water Park Pat Harrison Waterway District near Enterprise is primitive, centered on a 65-foot waterfall and historic grist mill along the Chunky River. Chunky River Recreation and Frog Level RV Park round out the nearby choices for travelers wanting a quieter base.
Things to do near Decatur
Water dominates the recreation menu. Turkey Creek's 250-acre lake is one of the region's better-known water-skiing spots, with bass fishing, boat rentals, a sand beach, and nature trails through woods that hold deer, turkeys, and ducks. Okatibbee Lake covers about 3,800 acres with 28 miles of shoreline, year-round bass fishing, open water for skiing, and a seasonal waterslide complex called Splashdown Country that runs May through Labor Day under lifeguard supervision. Dunns Falls offers a short walk to the 65-foot falls, a working water wheel, an 1857 grist mill relocated from Cave Springs, Georgia, plus fishing, canoeing, and swimming on the Chunky River and a stocked mill pond. Bienville National Forest, west of Decatur, adds hiking, fishing at Marathon Lake and Shongelo Lake, and quiet picnic areas in longleaf pine woods.

East-central Mississippi has mild winters, hot humid summers, and rainfall in every month. Spring is the strongest all-around window for RV travel: daytime highs in the 70s, lakes warm enough for fishing, and water skiing at Turkey Creek typically picking up by mid-March. Summer is family-vacation peak, with the Splashdown Country slides at Okatibbee operating May through Labor Day. Expect afternoon thunderstorms, high humidity, and heat indices that often climb above 100°F. Late summer and early fall fall inside the Atlantic hurricane season, and remnants of Gulf systems can drop heavy rain on the Pascagoula basin, so travelers should monitor National Hurricane Center advisories. Fall cools through October and November, brings drier weather, and offers good fishing and uncrowded sites. Winter is short and chilly rather than cold, with brief freezes. Most Pat Harrison parks, including Turkey Creek and Okatibbee, stay open year round, while Splashdown Country and some seasonal amenities close outside the May through Labor Day window.
How to book campgrounds near Decatur
Pat Harrison Waterway District parks, including Turkey Creek, Okatibbee, and Dunns Falls, are booked directly through the district or the individual park office rather than through Recreation.gov. Travelers should call the park or use the PHWD website for cabin, motel, and RV-site reservations, and confirm current deposit and cancellation rules at booking. Bienville National Forest sites such as Shockaloe Base Camp operate first-come, first-served, with on-site pay envelopes. Private parks like Frog Level RV Park and Chunky River Recreation take reservations directly through the operator. Holiday weekends and the Memorial Day through Labor Day stretch fill earliest, especially full-hookup sites at Okatibbee, so booking several weeks ahead is sensible for summer travel.
What to expect on arrival
Sites in the Pat Harrison parks are level, set among tall southern pines, and generally spaced with reasonable privacy. Turkey Creek offers fully developed camping spurs with water and electric hookups, a dump station, picnic tables, grills, a playground, laundry, firewood, a white sand beach, and three vacation cabins. Okatibbee has camping spurs with 50-amp electric service, restrooms with showers, laundry, four vacation cabins, and a 25-room motel near the water. Dunns Falls is primitive: a small camping area with picnic tables and grills, no hookups, flush toilets, and trail access to the falls and mill. Pets are generally allowed at campsites on leash but not in swimming areas or lodging units. Cell coverage is usable in most of the area but can drop inside the national forest.
