Campgrounds and RV parks near Diamondhead, MS

The Gulf Coast beach runs almost continuously from Bay St. Louis through Pass Christian and Gulfport, giving easy access to swimming, kayaking, and shore fishing. Downtown Bay St. Louis has walkable shops, restaurants, and a small-craft harbor, and Hollywood Casino sits just off Highway 90 for gaming and dining. Inside Buccaneer State Park, families use the 4.5-acre Buccaneer Bay waterpark overlooking the Gulf of Mexico, which operates seasonally from Memorial Day through early September and features a wave pool, waterslides, and a Lil' Smuggler's Cove kids' area for a separate fee. The park also has covered pavilions, a large playground, a 1.8-mile nature trail, and an 18-hole disc golf course. The INFINITY Science Center and NASA Stennis Space Center are a short drive west for a rainy-day option.

The Mississippi Gulf Coast is a year-round camping destination, but the shoulder seasons are the most comfortable for RV travel. Late spring and early fall bring warm days, cooler evenings, and lower humidity than mid-summer, and campsites are easier to book outside school breaks and major events. Summer runs hot and humid with frequent afternoon thunderstorms, and it overlaps with Atlantic hurricane season, which peaks from August through October. Coastal parks can close on short notice during named-storm threats, so travelers should watch National Hurricane Center advisories and confirm cancellation policies before arrival. Winter is mild and popular with snowbirds, though overnight lows in January can drop into the low 40s Fahrenheit, so heated water hoses and tank protection are worth packing. Fall brings the Cruising the Coast classic car show, which fills coastal campgrounds well in advance, so booking several months out is advisable for peak weekends and special events.

Sites along the coast are a mix of paved and grass pads. Inside Buccaneer State Park, the campground has paved interior roads, the gate is locked overnight for security, and many sites are shaded by mature oaks, though the Gulf View overflow sites on the grassy field have no shade. Railroad tracks run behind the park, and freight trains pass through at night. Expect humidity, mosquitoes near marshy areas, and strong sun at beachfront sites. Bring insect repellent, an awning or shade setup, and full freshwater tanks if arriving late. Pets are generally welcome on leash, and most parks have dump stations, laundry, and hot showers. Cell coverage is reliable across the Diamondhead, Bay St. Louis, and Waveland corridor.
