Campgrounds near Flora, Mississippi
Flora sits in Madison County in central Mississippi, roughly twenty miles north of Jackson and within easy reach of the Natchez Trace Parkway. The area works well as an RV base for travelers exploring the state capital, the Ross Barnett Reservoir, and the Vicksburg battlefield corridor along Interstate 20.
The closest option is Mississippi Petrified Forest Campground, a privately owned park in Flora that features a petrified forest tour available by admission fee. It offers 11 full hook-up RV sites with 20, 30, and 50 amp service, 4 tent sites with water and electricity, modern showers and restrooms, and a dump station. Movietown RV Park and Mini Storage provides another close-in option in Flora itself.
Within a short drive, Le Fleurs Bluff State Park sits in the heart of urban Jackson, a 305-acre park with camping, fishing, picnic spots, nature trails, and an 18-hole disc golf course. Timberlake Campground sits on the Ross Barnett Reservoir near Brandon, and Askew's Landing RV Campground lies off Interstate 20 near Edwards, between Jackson and Vicksburg.
Things to do near Flora
The signature stop is the Mississippi Petrified Forest itself. The forest is believed to have formed roughly 36 million years ago when fir, cypress, and maple logs washed down an ancient river channel and later became petrified, and it is one of only two petrified forests in the eastern United States. A short nature trail, a museum, and a gem flume make it a solid half-day family stop.
In Jackson, families can pair a campsite at Le Fleurs Bluff with the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science, the Mississippi Children's Museum, and an accessible playground located at the park's west entrance off Museum Drive. Mayes Lake offers bass, bream, catfish, and crappie fishing from accessible piers.
At the Ross Barnett Reservoir, Timberlake Campground provides direct water access with a private boat launch, tennis courts, and a swimming pool. Askew's Landing adds a stocked 15-acre fishing lake, kayaks, pedal boats, a saltwater pool, and a gem-mining sluice.

Central Mississippi has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and cool winters, abundant rainfall throughout the year, and heavy downpours and afternoon thunderstorms during the warmer months, though fall is typically the driest season. Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV travel.
Spring runs warm and wet, with April historically among the wettest months. Spring also brings heavy gnat populations that can drive campers indoors during afternoon and evening hours at riverside sites like Le Fleurs Bluff. Book early for spring weekends around the Jackson museums and the Natchez Trace.
Summer is hot, humid, and stormy, with regular afternoon thunderstorms. Pools at Timberlake and Askew's Landing become the main draw. Fall delivers the driest, mildest conditions and is ideal for touring Vicksburg and the Trace. Winter is cool rather than cold, and campgrounds generally stay open year-round, but low-lying sites near the Pearl River can flood after heavy rain.
How to book campgrounds near Flora
State park sites use one system. Reservations at Le Fleurs Bluff are accepted through the MDWFP reservation portal, run by the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks, which covers all Mississippi state parks. Booking windows open several months out, and spring and fall weekends fill first.
Timberlake Campground is run by the Pearl River Valley Water Supply District (The Rez) and is reserved directly through therez.ms.gov. It stays open year-round and has a large number of monthly residents, so short-stay inventory can be tight on holiday weekends.
Private parks book direct. Askew's Landing RV Campground takes reservations through its own website and Campspot, while Mississippi Petrified Forest Campground and Movietown RV Park and Mini Storage handle bookings by phone or through their own sites. For popular weekends, reserve six to eight weeks ahead.
What to expect on the ground
Sites in the area lean toward wooded, level pads with full or partial hookups. Mississippi Petrified Forest Campground has 11 full-hookup sites with a few pull-throughs, free WiFi, pets allowed, and a dump station, though pads are dirt and only a handful of sites suit big rigs.
Le Fleurs Bluff is compact and urban. The park has 28 developed camping sites with water and electric and about 10 primitive tent sites near Mayes Lake, plus a bathhouse with hot showers and a central dump station. Expect some road and city noise, and note that low-lying sections can flood after prolonged rain.
Timberlake is a larger reservoir park with concrete pads, a pool, tennis courts, laundry, and a private boat launch, popular with long-term residents. Askew's Landing runs smaller and more family-focused, with a 15-acre lake, kayaks, a saltwater pool, glamping cabins, and two dog parks.
