Camping near Flowood, Mississippi
Flowood sits just east of Jackson in Rankin County, placing RV travelers within easy reach of two very different camping scenes: an urban state park inside Jackson city limits, and a cluster of larger lakeside campgrounds on the 33,000-acre Ross Barnett Reservoir. Interstate 55, Interstate 20, and the Natchez Trace Parkway all converge nearby, making Flowood a practical overnight stop as well as a multi-day base.
Le Fleurs Bluff State Park is the closest option, a 305-acre wooded park on Mayes Lake with 28 water-and-electric sites, primitive tent sites, hot showers, and walking access to the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science and Mississippi Children's Museum. North of Flowood, Timberlake Campground, Goshen Springs Campground, and Sunset Marina at 43 line the reservoir with concrete pads, boat launches, and full hookups.
For a quieter setting south of town, Wendy Oaks RV Resort in Florence offers a small park on a private 8-acre lake with full hookups and use of kayaks and paddleboats.
Things to do around Flowood
The Ross Barnett Reservoir dominates the local recreation calendar. Boating, bass and crappie fishing, paddling, and shoreline picnicking are the main draws, with public boat launches at Timberlake Campground, Goshen Springs Campground, and Sunset Marina at 43. The Natchez Trace Parkway runs along the west side of the reservoir and offers a low-speed scenic drive with pull-offs and multi-use trails.
In Jackson, families can pair a campground stay with the Mississippi Children's Museum, the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science, and the 18-hole disc golf course inside Le Fleurs Bluff State Park. Mayes Lake at the state park is stocked with bass, bream, catfish, and crappie, and only electric trolling motors are permitted on the water.

Central Mississippi has a humid subtropical climate with mild winters, hot summers, and rain in every month. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel: daytime highs sit in the 70s Fahrenheit, humidity is lower, and mosquitoes are less aggressive. April is typically the wettest month, so trips in late March or October tend to balance mild temperatures with fewer washouts.
Summer brings heat indexes well above 100 and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Shaded sites and full hookups with 50-amp service for air conditioning become priorities, and the reservoir sees peak boating traffic on weekends and holidays. Sites at Timberlake Campground, Goshen Springs Campground, and Sunset Marina at 43 fill quickly around Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day.
Winter is the quiet season. Most campgrounds around the reservoir and Le Fleurs Bluff State Park stay open year-round, but freezes are possible in January, so RVers should be prepared to disconnect water hoses on cold nights.
How to book a site near Flowood
Le Fleurs Bluff State Park is managed by the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks, with reservations accepted through the MDWFP website. A small daily park entry fee applies to all vehicles. Booking several weeks ahead is wise for spring and fall weekends because the campground is small.
Timberlake Campground and Goshen Springs Campground are operated by the Pearl River Valley Water Supply District, often referred to locally as The Rez. Reservations are handled directly through the district; some sites are on monthly leases, and nightly availability is limited during peak season.
Sunset Marina at 43 accepts online nightly bookings and takes phone reservations for longer stays; a reserved spot is required before entering the park. Wendy Oaks RV Resort offers daily, weekly, and monthly rentals bookable online or by phone through the operator directly.
What to expect on the ground
Reservoir-side campgrounds around Flowood generally feature level concrete pads, full or partial hookups, and gate-code access. Big rigs are accommodated at Timberlake Campground, Goshen Springs Campground, and Sunset Marina at 43, with 30- and 50-amp service standard. Expect a mix of transient and long-term monthly residents, which keeps sites well-tended but can mean less turnover in prime waterfront rows.
Le Fleurs Bluff State Park has fewer sites and a more rustic feel, with a bathhouse, laundry, a central dump station, and camp roads that can be rough in spots. Cell coverage across the area is strong on major carriers, groceries and restaurants are within a short drive of every listed campground, and mosquitoes and ticks are worth planning for from late spring through early fall.

Pack a tie-out, a collapsible water bowl, and a copy of vaccination records just in case.
mdwfp.com/parks-destinations/state-parks/lefleurs-bluff/Can the RV be delivered to my campsite or home in Flowood?
Yes, RV delivery in Flowood is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you're new to RVing. Many local hosts will drive the RV straight to your driveway, a nearby campground like Timberlake on the Ross Barnett Reservoir, or even out to LeFleur's Bluff State Park. They'll level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. To find these listings, use the Delivery filter on RVezy. Delivery fees usually scale with distance, so picking a campground within 20 miles of Flowood keeps costs friendly. It's the ultimate stress-free first-time RV experience.

nps.gov/natr/index.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Flowood, MS?
You're spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Flowood include Timberlake Campground on the Ross Barnett Reservoir (10 minutes away, full hookups, lakefront sites), Goshen Springs Campground also on the reservoir (quieter, run by the Pearl River Valley Water Supply District), LeFleur's Bluff State Park in Jackson (urban convenience with shaded sites), Roosevelt State Park in Morton (about 35 miles east, great hiking), and Askew's Landing in Edwards (rustic, family-run). For RV camping in Flowood you'll want to book Timberlake and Goshen Springs early during spring and fall weekends. Pro tip: reservoir sunsets from the west-facing Timberlake loops are unbeatable.
therez.ms.gov/campgrounds/When is the best time of year for RV camping in Flowood?
Spring (mid-March through May) and fall (late September through early November) are the sweet spots for any Flowood RV trip. Daytime highs sit in the comfortable 70s to low 80s Fahrenheit, humidity is manageable, and the dogwoods and azaleas put on a show in April. Summer brings highs in the mid 90s with thick humidity and frequent afternoon thunderstorms, so plan early-morning drives and campsites with shade and 50-amp hookups for the AC. Winters are mild, often in the 50s and 60s, making December and January a quietly great time to score lower nightly rates and have campgrounds nearly to yourself.
weather.gov/jan/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving one around Flowood?
You're going to do great, and you're not alone. First time renting an RV is the most common scenario on RVezy, and every host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, hookups, and the bathroom systems. Flowood is ideal for beginners: wide suburban roads, easy access to I-55 and I-20, and flat terrain with no mountain passes. If highway merging feels intimidating, start with a travel trailer or Class C under 25 feet. Stick to Lakeland Drive and the Reservoir loop for your first day, then graduate to the Natchez Trace Parkway, which has a relaxed 50 mph speed limit and no commercial trucks.
nps.gov/natr/planyourvisit/driving.htmWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my Flowood trip?
You are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so if you get a flat on I-20 near Pearl, a dead battery at Timberlake Campground, or a hitch issue on the Natchez Trace, one call gets help dispatched. Your host is also a direct message away and knows the quirks of their rig better than anyone. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip too. Save the roadside number in your phone before you leave Flowood and snap a photo of your campsite address so dispatch can find you quickly.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Flowood RV rental across state lines or into Canada or Mexico?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome and popular. From Flowood, classic routes include heading south to New Orleans (185 miles), east to the Alabama Gulf Coast (about 220 miles), north to Memphis along the Natchez Trace, and west to Shreveport, Louisiana. Travel into Canada may be possible with host approval, so confirm by messaging through the listing before booking. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend across that border. For any cross-state trip, give your host a heads-up so they can confirm mileage and any seasonal considerations.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel economy and gas budget should I plan for in Mississippi?
Good news: Mississippi consistently has some of the lowest gas prices in the country, which makes RV rental in Mississippi a budget-friendly choice. Expect a Class C motorhome to get 8 to 10 miles per gallon, a Class A around 6 to 8, and a tow-vehicle plus travel trailer setup roughly 10 to 13. With regular unleaded often sitting well below the national average around Flowood, a 300-mile weekend loop in a Class C runs roughly $90 to $120 in fuel. Fill up at the Buc-ee's-style stations along I-20 in Pearl or Brandon for the best per-gallon prices before heading out on longer routes.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Flowood?
For peak weekends, book 2 to 3 months ahead; for weekdays or winter, even a week out usually works. Ross Barnett Reservoir campgrounds like Timberlake and Goshen Springs are managed by the Pearl River Valley Water Supply District and fill fast for Memorial Day, July 4th, and football Saturdays when Mississippi State or Ole Miss play home games. Mississippi State Parks (including LeFleur's Bluff and Roosevelt) take reservations through the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks site. Pro tip: reservations open six months out at state parks, so set a calendar reminder if you've got your eye on an October weekend.
mdwfp.com/parks-destinations/reservations.aspxWhat are local driving conditions like around Flowood?
Flowood is one of the easier metros in the South to drive an RV through. Roads are flat, lanes are generally wide, and traffic on Lakeland Drive and I-55 is manageable outside of weekday rush hour (7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m.). Watch for sudden summer thunderstorms between June and September, which can drop visibility fast on I-20, and be cautious of low-hanging oak branches on older residential streets in nearby Jackson. The Natchez Trace Parkway is RV heaven: 50 mph limit, no commercial trucks, and gentle curves. Avoid downtown Jackson side streets with a tall rig because of overpasses under 12 feet.
mdot.ms.gov/portal/trafficinfo.aspxWhat amenities do campgrounds near Flowood offer for RVs?
You'll find full-service setups close to home. Timberlake and Goshen Springs Campgrounds on the Ross Barnett Reservoir offer 30/50-amp electric, water, sewer hookups at most sites, dump stations, hot showers, and laundry. LeFleur's Bluff State Park has water and electric plus a dump station and is one of the most convenient places for RV camping in Flowood since it's only 10 minutes away. Roosevelt State Park adds a swimming pool and disc golf. Fill fresh water on arrival before heading to your site, and use the dump station on your way out to save time. Most reservoir sites have decent Verizon and AT&T signal too.
mdwfp.com/parks-destinations/state-parks/What's included inside a typical RV rental in Flowood?
More than you'd expect. A typical campervan rental in Flowood or larger motorhome comes fully equipped with sleeping for 2 to 8 (queen beds, bunks, convertible dinettes), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control with roof AC and furnace, and seatbelted seats for travel. Many hosts include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor chairs, and a propane grill. Wi-Fi hotspots and onboard generators are common add-ons, especially handy for boondocking along the Natchez Trace. Check the amenities section of each listing, and message the host if there's a specific item like a coffee maker or pack-n-play you need.
nps.gov/natr/planyourvisit/campgrounds.htmWhat add-ons and pickup options should I expect when I rent an RV in Flowood?
Hosts make customizing easy. Popular add-ons for a Flowood RV trip include linen and towel packages ($25 to $50), camp kitchen kits, generators ($25 to $50 per day), bike racks, kayaks, and pet cleaning fees. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Flowood, Brandon, Pearl, or Madison, and many offer delivery within the Jackson metro for a flat fee. Mileage policies vary, with 100 to 150 free miles per day being typical and some listings offering unlimited mileage for longer trips. Use Instant Book listings if you're planning last-minute, and confirm pickup and drop-off times in your messages to avoid late fees.
visitjackson.com/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and secure. When you book your RV rental in Flowood, RVezy charges your card for the trip total (rental, protection plan, fees, and any add-ons) directly through the platform, never in cash to the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately, typically a few days before pickup, and released after the trip assuming no damage or policy violations. To avoid hiccups, do a thorough walk-around video with your host at pickup and drop-off, return the RV with the agreed fuel and propane levels, and dump the tanks if your host requires it.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip destinations from Flowood for a family RV trip?
Flowood is a fantastic launch pad for a family RV trip in Mississippi. Top routes include the Natchez Trace Parkway south to Natchez (about 100 miles of scenic, truck-free driving), the Mississippi Gulf Coast at Gulfport and Biloxi (165 miles of beaches), New Orleans for beignets and the French Quarter (185 miles), Vicksburg National Military Park for Civil War history (about 45 miles), and Tishomingo State Park in the northeast hills (about 215 miles, with rocky terrain and great hiking). For a 3-day loop, try Flowood to Natchez to Vicksburg and back. Pro tip: book the Natchez Trace's free Rocky Springs Campground midweek for a true insider experience.
