Campgrounds near Heidelberg, Mississippi
Heidelberg sits in Jasper County in southeast Mississippi, roughly halfway between Laurel and Meridian along US-11 and within reach of I-59. The area is Pine Belt country: gently rolling pine and hardwood forest, small rivers, and reservoir-based water parks. RV travelers use Heidelberg as a base for river floats on the Chunky and Chickasawhay, reservoir fishing, and stops along the Meridian-to-Hattiesburg corridor.
Campground options fall into three groups. Private RV parks such as Sleepy Hollow RV Park offer full hookups and easy access to the US-11 and I-59 corridor. State-run Clarkco State Park lies to the north near Quitman, and the Pat Harrison Waterway District operates a chain of reservoir-based water parks across the region.
The Pat Harrison Waterway District is a Mississippi state agency that manages nine water parks with cabins, RV campsites, water slides, boat launches, shelters, and nature trails, located adjacent to reservoirs and rivers in the Pascagoula River Basin. Maynor Creek Water Park and Dunns Falls Water Park Pat Harrison Waterway District are the two closest PHWD parks to Heidelberg.
Things to do near Heidelberg
Water is the main draw. Dunns Falls Water Park Pat Harrison Waterway District centers on a waterfall with a wading pool at its base and nature trails along the Chunky River, which is used for swimming, paddling, and bank fishing. Nearby, Chunky River Recreation offers access to float trips on the same river system.
Clarkco State Park adds forested trails and a lake. Clarkco offers 14 miles of nature and biking trails, a five-mile nature trail that encircles the park, and an observation tower at the upper end of the lake. Clarkco Lake spans 65 acres of fresh water for fishing and water sports, stocked with bass, bream, and catfish.
Maynor Creek Water Park adds reservoir boating and swim access on Maynor Creek Reservoir near Waynesboro, and Meridian is a short drive north for museums, restaurants, and grocery runs.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel here. These shoulder seasons are the most popular booking windows at Clarkco State Park and the Pat Harrison Waterway District parks.
Summer is hot and humid across the Pine Belt, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. July is the wettest month and severe storms can bring damaging winds, large hail, lightning, and heavy rain. Families still fill sites at Maynor Creek Water Park and Clarkco State Park for swimming, so book early for July and holiday weekends.
Winters are mild but damp. Average highs sit near the upper 50s Fahrenheit and lows near 40, with January the coldest month and hard freezes brief. Hurricane remnants can push heavy rain inland from June through November, so watch tropical forecasts when planning trips in late summer and early fall.
How to book campgrounds near Heidelberg
Reservation systems vary by operator. Clarkco State Park is open year round and uses the Mississippi State Parks online reservation portal through ReserveAmerica. Reservations must be made at least two days ahead of arrival and can be made up to 24 months in advance, and the minimum age to make a reservation is 21 years. Cabins book out earliest for spring, fall, and holiday weekends.
Pat Harrison Waterway District parks, including Maynor Creek Water Park and Dunns Falls Water Park Pat Harrison Waterway District, handle bookings differently. Cabin reservations are made online, and for camping reservations, campers contact the park directly. Reservations of 2, 3, or 4 nights can be booked up to 3 months in advance with full payment due within 14 days, and reservations of 5 or more nights can be booked up to one year in advance with a 3-night deposit within 14 days and the remaining balance due 30 days before arrival.
Private parks like Sleepy Hollow RV Park take direct online and phone bookings and often have more flexibility for last-minute stays.
What to expect
Sites in this area lean rustic to mid-range. State and district parks offer paved or gravel pads with picnic tables, fire rings or grills, and bathhouses. At Clarkco State Park, 43 full hookup sites are available for RV camping with picnic tables, grills, electricity, water, and sewer, plus three bathhouses (two with hot showers and laundry) and a central sewage dumping station in the developed camping area.
Expect strict quiet hours, leash rules, and a few operator-specific quirks. Pets at Clarkco must stay on a six-foot leash, portable generators are prohibited, and pets are not allowed in cabins or other park buildings. Pat Harrison Waterway District cabins do not allow pets at all.
Cell service is generally usable along the US-11 and I-59 corridor but can drop inside forested park loops. Bring bug spray from spring through fall, and stock groceries in Laurel or Meridian since Heidelberg itself has limited retail.
