Campgrounds and RV parks near Houston, MS

The Natchez Trace Parkway is the main draw. The National Park Service manages three campgrounds along the length of the 444 mile Parkway: Meriwether Lewis at Milepost 385.9, Jeff Busby at Milepost 193.1, and Rocky Springs at Milepost 54.8. Jeff Busby, the closest to Houston, includes an overlook atop Little Mountain and short interpretive trails. Lake activities are close at hand. Trace State Park offers fishing, boating, and kayaking on Trace Lake, plus miles of multi-use trails for mountain biking, horseback riding, and off-road vehicles, with additional walking paths near the developed camping area. Whites Creek Lake gives families a smaller, quieter fishing spot inside the Tombigbee National Forest, with picnic areas and easy walking loops.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in this part of Mississippi. Days are warm without the deep humidity of midsummer, and evenings cool off enough for comfortable sleeping. Campgrounds are typically busiest during the spring and fall, especially over holiday weekends. Wildflowers along the Parkway peak from late March into May. Summer runs hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common. Shaded sites at forest campgrounds and lake-adjacent parks are the most comfortable option. Bugs, especially mosquitoes and ticks, are active from late spring through early fall, so screens and repellent matter. Severe thunderstorms and tornadoes are a particular hazard in spring. Winter is mild by northern standards but can bring cold snaps and heavy rain, with freezing temperatures reaching much of the state most winters. Many private parks stay open year-round, and Trace State Park is open year-round with sites reservable up to 24 months in advance through the Mississippi State Parks reservation system on ReserveAmerica. Leaf color in the surrounding hardwoods typically peaks from late October through mid-November.

Expect a mix of pine and hardwood forest, red-clay soil, and rolling terrain rather than flat pads. State park loops are generally paved and level, though interior roads can be rough in spots. At Trace State Park all developed sites have full hookups with electric, water, and sewer, and the campground includes three bathhouses with hot showers, a coin-operated laundromat, and a central dump station. Cell coverage varies and can be spotty in the surrounding forest, so plan on downloading maps and reservations in advance. Trace State Park is located in Pontotoc County, which is a dry county, so no alcohol is permitted. Parkway campgrounds are primitive with basic restrooms and no hookups, so bring water, leveling blocks, and a full propane tank.
