Campgrounds and RV parks near Lexington, MS

Fishing is the headline activity. English Lake and Odum Lake at Holmes County State Park are stocked with bluegill, crappie, catfish, and largemouth bass, and the upper Ross Barnett Reservoir near Low Head Dam - PRVWSD is known for strong black crappie fishing between Highway 43 and the low head dam. On land, Holmes County State Park has about four miles of interpretive nature trails, a picnic area with shelters, an amphitheater, a skating rink, an archery range, and group camping with a meeting room. Hillside National Wildlife Refuge, west of Lexington, protects lower-Delta bottomland habitat and is open for wildlife viewing, seasonal hunting, and birding. Day trips reach the Mississippi Petrified Forest at Flora, the Natchez Trace Parkway, and cultural stops in Greenwood and Jackson.

Spring and fall are the best RV windows. March through May brings mild days, blooming hardwoods, and active bass and crappie fishing, and it is also among the wettest stretches of the year, so expect thunderstorms and occasional severe-weather watches. October and November are drier and cooler, with clear skies and good conditions for hiking and lake days; fall is typically the driest season in central Mississippi. Summer is hot and humid. Highs sit in the low 90s Fahrenheit from June through August, afternoon thunderstorms are common, and mosquitoes and ticks are active in the hardwood forests around Holmes County State Park. Shaded, hookup sites are worth targeting. Winter is mild by North American standards, with highs generally in the mid to upper 50s and lows near freezing on the coldest nights. Most area campgrounds remain open year-round, but expect reduced staffing, occasional freeze advisories, and short cold snaps that can affect water hookups. Peak Atlantic hurricane season, August through October, can bring heavy inland rain bands but rarely damaging wind this far from the coast.

Holmes County State Park has 28 RV pads set among mature hardwoods on rolling ground, with water and electric hookups, picnic tables and grills, and a central dump station. A bathhouse with hot showers and coin-operated laundry serves the developed camping area, and sites accommodate rigs up to about 45 feet. Cell coverage in the park is spotty, and the nearest full-service town for groceries and fuel is Durant, just off I-55 Exit 150. Private parks near Lexington and Vaiden trend toward simpler, gravel-pad layouts geared to overnighters and I-55 travelers, with hookups but fewer recreational amenities. Reservoir campgrounds south of the area, including Low Head Dam - PRVWSD, are more open and lake-oriented, offering water, electric, a dump station, and a boat ramp, and they fill quickly on summer weekends and during major fishing tournaments.
