RV camping near Magee, Mississippi
Magee sits in Simpson County in south-central Mississippi, roughly forty miles southeast of Jackson and within reach of the Bienville National Forest. The area is small-town Mississippi: pine woods, farmland, and quiet two-lane highways that make towing an RV straightforward. Most travelers use Magee as a base for exploring nearby lakes, state parks, and the Jackson metro without staying in the city itself.
Campground options range from private RV parks with pull-through, full-hookup sites to a state park campground on a lake. Wendy Oaks RV Resort and Green Tree RV and Recreational Park handle most private-park stays close to town. Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort adds a family-focused option with pools and organized activities, and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Pelahatchie is within a short drive.
For a more traditional outdoor stay, RO Hannah at Roosevelt State Park offers sites on the east side of Shadow Lake, inside a wooded state park a short drive north of Magee.
Things to do around Magee
The main draws are water and woods. Roosevelt State Park sits between Meridian and Jackson and offers outdoor recreation overlooking the Bienville National Forest. On-site amenities include a seasonal swimming pool with water slide, disc golf course, tennis courts, playgrounds, nature trails suitable for hiking and mountain biking, and kayak rentals at Shadow Lake. Shadow Lake is open to fishing, kayaking, and small-boat use.
Families staying at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort or the Pelahatchie location get pool complexes, themed weekends, and kid-focused programming without leaving the campground. Day trips to Jackson add the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum, the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science, and larger shopping. Anglers use the Ross Barnett Reservoir north of the city for bass and crappie.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in this part of Mississippi. March through May brings warm days, wildflowers, and comfortable overnight lows before humidity peaks. October and November deliver cooler, drier weather with autumn color in the pine and hardwood forests. These shoulder months also line up with lower bug pressure and easier hiking.
Summer is hot and humid, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Campgrounds with pools, shaded sites, and 50-amp service for air conditioning, such as the Jellystone locations, tend to book heavily around school breaks and holiday weekends. Tropical systems can move inland from the Gulf between June and November, so travelers should track forecasts.
Winters are short and mild by northern standards but can turn cold and wet. State-park campgrounds and private parks in the area generally stay open year-round, though some seasonal amenities like pools and water slides close after Labor Day.
How to book a campsite
Roosevelt State Park takes reservations through the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks online portal, or by calling the park directly. The park has 110 RV campsites with picnic tables and grills, and all sites have 50-amp, 30-amp, and 20-amp electricity, sewer, and water. Sites fill quickly during special events and holidays, so advance booking is recommended, especially for lakefront spots on Shadow Lake.
Private parks like Wendy Oaks RV Resort, Green Tree RV and Recreational Park, and the two Jellystone locations take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Reservations are a good idea if planning to visit between Memorial Day and Labor Day, when family campgrounds fill up on weekends.
What to expect on the ground
Roads into Magee are flat and well maintained, and access from I-20 is straightforward for larger rigs. Roosevelt State Park sits right off I-20 near Morton, about a 35-minute drive east of Jackson. Inside the state park, campground roads and RV pads are paved, and all RV pads are within easy access to a central sewage dumping station and a bathhouse with hot showers. Sites have a 40-foot length limit, so larger rigs should plan accordingly.
Cell coverage is generally reliable near town and along the interstate but thins in wooded stretches. Grocery, fuel, and RV supply runs are easiest in Magee itself or in Brandon and Pearl closer to Jackson. Expect mosquitoes and biting flies from late spring through early fall; screens, repellent, and a screened outdoor shelter help.
