Camping near Mantachie, Mississippi
Mantachie sits in Itawamba County in northeast Mississippi, within easy reach of Tupelo, the Natchez Trace Parkway, and the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway. The area is rural and wooded, with small lakes, Corps of Engineers reservoirs, and a mix of state park and private RV options within a short drive.
Tombigbee State Park is the closest public campground, located about six miles south of Tupelo on Lake Lee. It offers a small paved loop for RVs, tent sites, and cabins, run by the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks. Private options in the corridor include Campgrounds at Barnes Crossing near Tupelo's shopping district, Natchez Trace RV Park just off the Parkway near Shannon, Smithville Marina Campground on the Tenn-Tom Waterway to the south, and Red Bay Acres RV Resort across the state line in Alabama.
Campers can pick from full-hookup pull-throughs, wooded state park loops, and waterfront sites on the Tenn-Tom.
Things to do around Mantachie
Fishing and paddling anchor most trips. Lake Lee at Tombigbee State Park is a 90-acre lake stocked with bass, bream, and catfish, with a boat launch and trolling-speed-only rules that keep the water calm for kayaks and canoes. No skiing, jet skis, or swimming are allowed on Lake Lee. The Tenn-Tom Waterway, reached from Smithville Marina Campground, holds bass, crappie, and catfish across a much larger river system.
On land, Tombigbee State Park has about 11 miles of mountain bike trails, a nature trail, and two 18-hole disc golf courses. The Natchez Trace Parkway runs alongside the region, offering a scenic drive with pull-offs, walking segments of the historic trace, and a Parkway Visitor Center near Tupelo.
Families often pair a day at the lake with a trip into Tupelo for the Elvis Presley Birthplace and the shops and restaurants around Barnes Crossing.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons. Daytime highs sit in the 60s to low 80s Fahrenheit, and fish become active on Lake Lee and the Tenn-Tom. Spring is also a wet, stormy shoulder, with steady rainfall and severe thunderstorm potential typical of the Mid-South.
Summers are hot and humid, with highs regularly topping 90°F and warm, sticky nights. Shaded sites and hookups with reliable 30- or 50-amp service for air conditioning matter most in June through August. This period also draws heavy weekend demand at Tombigbee State Park's small loop, so reserving early is advised.
Winters are short and mild by national standards, with highs typically in the 50s and lows dipping near freezing at night. Snow is light and infrequent, but December is the wettest month in the Tupelo area, so expect soft ground and check road access before booking primitive sites.
How to book near Mantachie
Tombigbee State Park takes reservations through the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks reservation system, and its 20 developed sites can be booked well in advance. The park recommends reserving as early as possible for spring, summer, and fall weekends, when the small loop fills quickly.
Corps of Engineers campgrounds along the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway are booked through Recreation.gov, with booking windows that open several months out. Private parks such as Natchez Trace RV Park, Campgrounds at Barnes Crossing, Smithville Marina Campground, and Red Bay Acres RV Resort are typically booked directly by phone or through the operator's own website, and some accept walk-ins when space is available.
For holiday weekends and the April to October peak, secure a site several weeks ahead.
What to expect on site
Tombigbee State Park has 20 paved sites on a compact loop, 18 with full hookups and 2 with water and electric only. A dump station, bathhouse with laundry, and playground are on site, and overnight guests check in at the visitor center on Lake Lee. The campground road is tight and sites sit close together, so larger rigs should confirm site dimensions with the park before booking.
Private parks in the area lean toward pull-through, full-hookup sites suited to travelers moving along I-22 and the Natchez Trace. Cell coverage is uneven in the wooded state park and along the Parkway, so download maps ahead of time.
Wildlife is common in the wooded areas, including deer, wild turkey, and other small mammals, so secure food and trash overnight.
