Camping near Marion, Mississippi
Marion sits just north of Meridian in Lauderdale County, along the US 45 corridor a few miles above the I-20/I-59 junction. The location puts RV travelers within easy reach of two very different camping styles: private highway-adjacent parks built for overnight and extended stays, and public water parks operated on nearby reservoirs and rivers.
Benchmark RV Park in Marion is open all year, offers full hookups with big-rig-friendly concrete pads, and includes laundry, a store, WiFi, and a fenced dog park. Hill Country Community is a smaller motorhome park in the same area, useful when the closer lots are full. For a lake setting, Okatibbee Water Park sits on Okatibbee Lake northwest of Meridian and is operated by the Pat Harrison Waterway District.
Farther out, Meridian East / Toomsuba KOA Journey serves interstate travelers east of the city, and Dunns Falls Water Park Pat Harrison Waterway District puts campers next to a waterfall on the Chunky River south of Meridian in Enterprise.
Things to do around Marion
Water recreation dominates the area. Okatibbee Lake has 28 miles of shoreline with year-round bass and crappie fishing and water skiing, and Splashdown Country's waterslides run May through Labor Day with lifeguards on duty. Bank fishing regularly produces crappie, bass, and bream, and eagles and hawks are often visible from the shoreline.
At Dunns Falls Water Park Pat Harrison Waterway District, the waterfall on the Chunky River anchors the park, and nature trails follow the river past a historic grist mill. Swimming and bank fishing are possible in the Chunky River.
In Meridian itself, families can visit the Jimmie Rodgers Museum, the Dentzel Carousel in Highland Park, the MSU Riley Center, and Bonita Lakes Park for hiking and mountain biking trails.

East-central Mississippi has a humid subtropical climate with mild winters and hot, humid summers. Rainfall is fairly evenly distributed through the year, with March the wettest month, and thunderstorms are common in summer but can occur year-round. Severe thunderstorms and tornado activity peak in spring, with a secondary uptick in late fall.
Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV camping. Summer brings heat indices well into the 90s and afternoon storms, while the Okatibbee waterslide season runs May through Labor Day, which drives the biggest weekend crowds at the lake. Fall is drier and cooler, with strong fishing and quieter campgrounds.
Winter stays mild by North American standards and most private parks in the area operate year-round. Benchmark RV Park stays open year-round with 35 full-hookup sites. Public water parks may reduce staffing and close swim beaches and slides in the off-season, so call ahead between November and April to confirm services.
How to book campgrounds near Marion
Reservation systems vary by operator. Private parks such as Benchmark RV Park and the Meridian East / Toomsuba KOA Journey are booked directly through the campground website or by phone; reservations are preferred at Benchmark, and KOA reservations run through koa.com.
Okatibbee Lake is bordered by both Pat Harrison Waterway District sites and a US Army Corps of Engineers campground. The Corps of Engineers maintains one full-service campground at the lake, Twiltley Branch, which is reserved on Recreation.gov. PHWD sites at Okatibbee Water Park and Dunns Falls Water Park are booked through the district.
PHWD reservations of two to four nights can be booked up to three months in advance with full payment due within 14 days, while stays of five or more nights can be booked up to one year out with a three-night deposit. Summer holiday weekends fill first, so book those as early as the window opens.
What to expect on arrival
Private parks near Marion are geared to travelers moving along I-20/I-59 and US 45. Benchmark offers 27 pull-through sites at 75 feet with 10-by-40-foot level concrete pads, 20/30/50-amp hookups, water and sewer at every site, and wide interior roads. Laundry and restroom facilities are available during office hours only. Freight rail runs through the corridor, so some train noise is normal.
At Okatibbee Water Park, sites operate year-round with developed camping spurs, 30/50-amp electric service, water, picnic tables, and grills. Cabins and a motel are also available on site.
Dunns Falls Water Park has established sites with picnic tables and fire rings, plus flush toilets and drinking water. Pat Harrison Waterway District cabins do not allow pets, so plan pet stays at RV sites or private parks.
