Campgrounds and RV parks near Mississippi Valley State University, MS

The Delta is best known for its music and food. Greenwood, minutes from campus, holds several stops on the Mississippi Blues Trail, plus museums, restaurants, and the Tallahatchie River. Day trips reach the B.B. King Museum in Indianola and the Grammy Museum in Cleveland. For outdoor time, Grenada Lake offers boating, crappie and bass fishing, and shoreline trails. Holmes County State Park is built around two lakes stocked with bass, bream, and catfish, with a boat launch and interpretive nature trails through the surrounding hardwood forest. Birders should plan visits to Hillside and Morgan Brake National Wildlife Refuges, both within a short drive of Itta Bena.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in the Delta. March through May brings mild temperatures, wildflowers, and steady rain that can push river levels up and occasionally flood low-lying access roads. Severe weather season also peaks in spring, so RVers should monitor storm alerts. Summer is hot and humid. Daytime highs routinely reach the low 90s Fahrenheit, and afternoon thunderstorms are common. Mosquitoes and biting flies are heavy near bayous and wildlife refuges, so screened setups and repellent are essential. Fishing and boating on Grenada Lake and area oxbows remain productive, though many campers shift activities to early morning and evening. Winters are generally mild but wet, with cool days and cold nights. Hard freezes are brief but do occur, so RVers should be ready to protect water lines. Fall, from late September into November, brings cooler air, lower humidity, and the region's peak hunting and migratory bird activity.

Terrain across the Delta is flat and easy to tow. Roads leading to campgrounds are mostly paved, though some rural approaches near lakes and refuges turn to gravel. Cell service is reliable in Greenwood and along I-55 but can drop in refuge areas and on Grenada Lake's back roads. Site quality varies. State park campgrounds offer water and electric hookups with a central dump station, and Holmes County State Park accommodates rigs up to about 40 feet. Private parks in the area more commonly provide full hookups and pull-throughs. RVers should plan for humidity, insects, and occasional severe weather. A weather radio, leveling blocks for softer Delta soils, and ample fresh water are practical additions to any trip in this region.
