Campgrounds near Morton, Mississippi
Morton sits in Scott County in central Mississippi, just off Interstate 20 between Jackson and Meridian. The town is the western entrance to the Bienville National Forest and is best known among RV travelers as the base for Roosevelt State Park, set in piney hills of a region with mild winters, hot summers, and year-round precipitation. Sites in and around Morton range from full-hookup state park loops to private resorts with pools and cabins.
The closest options include RO Hannah - Roosevelt State Park, one of the campgrounds inside Roosevelt State Park, and Green Tree RV and Recreational Park, a private park convenient to I-20. Families traveling with kids often push a short distance west toward Pelahatchie for Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort: Pelahatchie, both amenity-heavy resorts.
Anglers and paddlers headed to the Pearl River reservoirs use Low Head Dam - PRVWSD, managed by the Pearl River Valley Water Supply District. Together these sites cover the typical mix of state park, private resort, and reservoir camping within a short drive of Morton.
Things to do near Morton
Roosevelt State Park anchors most itineraries. The park surrounds 150-acre Shadow Lake and offers fishing, boating, a seasonal swimming pool and water slide, an 18-hole disc golf course, tennis courts, nature trails, a visitor center, and the Livingston Performing Arts and Media Center, all within a few minutes of downtown Morton. The surrounding Bienville National Forest adds longer trails and gravel forest routes suited to day trips.
West of Morton, the Ross Barnett Reservoir on the Pearl River is the region's main water-recreation draw, with boat ramps, fishing, and shoreline parks managed by PRVWSD. Families with younger children often build a day around the water-play features and organized activities at the Jellystone properties near Pelahatchie. Jackson, about forty miles west on I-20, offers museums, a zoo, and grocery resupply for longer RV trips.

Central Mississippi has a long camping season. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, with warm days, cool nights, and lower humidity than midsummer. Wildflowers and pine pollen peak in March and April, and fall color in the hardwood pockets of Bienville National Forest typically arrives in late October and November.
Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common. Shaded sites with 50-amp service are worth prioritizing from June through August so air conditioning can run continuously. Severe weather season peaks in spring, with a secondary severe season in late fall, and campers should monitor NWS Jackson watches and warnings. Tornadoes are a particular danger in spring.
Winters are mild but wet. Statewide annual average precipitation is around 55.9 inches, spread across the year, so soft ground and standing water on unpaved sites are common after storms. Roosevelt State Park's CCC campground operates year-round, and most private parks stay open through winter, though seasonal amenities such as pools and splash pads close outside the warm months.
How to book
Roosevelt State Park sites, including the R.O. Hannah loop and the CCC loop, are reserved through the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks portal at reserve.mdwfp.com. Reservations can be made up to two years in advance, and weekends from March through October fill first. Phone booking is also available through the park office.
Green Tree RV and Recreational Park and the two Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort locations in Pelahatchie are booked directly through each property's website or by phone. Jellystone weekends around spring break, Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Halloween often sell out months in advance. Low Head Dam - PRVWSD and the other reservoir campgrounds are reserved through the Pearl River Valley Water Supply District at therez.ms.gov. Confirm rig-length limits, hookup type, and pet policies at booking, since these vary by loop.
What to expect
Expect wooded, shaded sites with paved pads at Roosevelt State Park. Sites are back-in with a 40-foot length limit, and interior roads are narrow and winding, so larger Class A rigs should call ahead to confirm access. All 110 sites offer full hookups with water, sewer, and 20-, 30-, and 50-amp electric, and a central dump station is available. Cell coverage is generally usable on major carriers but can drop inside the forest.
Private parks in the area, including the Jellystone properties, offer full hookups, laundry, and family amenities such as pools and jumping pillows. Reservoir sites managed by PRVWSD are simpler, oriented toward anglers and boaters. Insects, especially mosquitoes and ticks, are active from spring through early fall, so repellent is worth packing. Firewood should be bought locally to avoid moving pests.
