Campgrounds near New Augusta, Mississippi
New Augusta sits in Perry County in the Pine Belt of south Mississippi, roughly a half hour southeast of Hattiesburg and within reach of the Leaf and Okatoma rivers and the De Soto National Forest. The area is flat to gently rolling longleaf pine country, which keeps most RV sites shaded and easy to level. Interstate 59 and US 98 provide the main approach corridors for larger rigs.
Campground options range from state park facilities to independent RV parks. Paul B Johnson State Park anchors the region with a large lakeside campground on Geiger Lake, while Compass Park, Magnolia Sands RV Park, and Shady Cove RV Park offer full-hookup private options closer to town and along nearby waterways. Hattiesburg/Okatoma KOA Holiday rounds out the list with a franchise property geared to families and pull-throughs.
Most renters use New Augusta as a base for river paddling, forest driving loops, and day trips to Hattiesburg, the Gulf Coast, or Laurel.
Things to do near New Augusta
Water activities dominate the trip list. The Okatoma Creek is a well-known float and kayak run with outfitters near Seminary, and the Leaf River offers slower paddling and fishing for bass and bream. Paul B Johnson State Park has a 225-acre lake with a swimming beach, boat ramp, and fishing opportunities for bass, bream, crappie, and channel catfish.
On land, the De Soto National Forest provides hiking on the Black Creek and Tuxachanie trails, plus OHV riding at designated areas. Families often build in a day trip to Hattiesburg for the Longleaf Trace rail-trail, the Mississippi Armed Forces Museum at Camp Shelby, and the Hattiesburg Zoo.
Downtown Laurel, about 30 miles north, draws visitors for its restored main street and shops made popular by the Home Town television series.

South Mississippi has a long RV season. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows, with warm days, cooler nights, and lower humidity than midsummer. Wildflowers and dogwoods bloom from mid-March into April, and fall color in the hardwood bottoms peaks in late October and early November.
Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common and heat indices frequently above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Sites with shade and full hookups for continuous air conditioning are strongly preferred. Hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30, with the highest activity from mid-August through October; renters should monitor National Hurricane Center advisories and be ready to reroute inland if a storm targets the central Gulf Coast.
Winters are mild but wet, and hard freezes are uncommon. Most private RV parks stay open year-round, and Paul B Johnson State Park operates year-round as well.
Booking and reservations
Paul B Johnson State Park is booked through the Mississippi State Parks reservation system operated by the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks at reserve.mdwfp.com. Sites can be reserved up to 24 months in advance, with a minimum booking of two days ahead of arrival, and holiday weekends fill early. The minimum age to make a reservation is 21.
Compass Park, Magnolia Sands RV Park, Shady Cove RV Park, and Hattiesburg/Okatoma KOA Holiday take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. KOA properties can also be booked through the KOA app and rewards program.
For spring break, Memorial Day, July Fourth, and Labor Day weekends, book at least six to eight weeks out. Big-rig pull-throughs and 50-amp sites sell out first.
What to expect
Roads into most area campgrounds are paved or well-graded gravel and handle Class A and fifth-wheel rigs without trouble. Pine straw and sand are common on sites, so leveling blocks and a small entry mat are useful. Expect biting insects from April through October; mosquitoes, gnats, and ticks are all active, and repellent with DEET or picaridin is standard kit.
Cell coverage is generally solid along US 98 and near Hattiesburg but can drop inside De Soto National Forest. Grocery runs are easiest in Hattiesburg or Petal, where big-box stores, propane refills, and RV service are available.
Wildlife includes deer, armadillos, raccoons, and the occasional alligator near lake edges and slow river backwaters. Keep food secured and pets leashed.
