Campgrounds and RV parks near Okolona, MS

Water recreation drives much of the itinerary. Trace Lake is stocked with bass, catfish, redear, bluegill, and crappie, and Lake Lee at Tombigbee State Park is a 90-acre freshwater lake stocked with bass, bream, and catfish, with no skiing, jet skis, or swimming permitted. The Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway holds bass, crappie, catfish, and other species, accessible from Smithville Marina Campground. Land activities include hiking, mountain biking, and disc golf. Trace State Park has two 18-hole disc golf courses; the Old Warrior Run course is the first North Mississippi long arm course, and the Trace Gold course is a professional course. Tombigbee State Park also features two disc golf courses. The Natchez Trace Parkway runs directly through the region, and Tupelo, headquarters of the parkway, adds the Elvis Presley Birthplace and the Mall at Barnes Crossing within a short drive.

The area has a humid subtropical climate. Summers are long, hot, and muggy, winters are short, cold, and wet, and skies are partly cloudy year round. State parks operate year-round, with the peak camping season running from May through August at Trace State Park, and other area campgrounds follow a similar pattern. Spring brings mild temperatures and frequent rain, and it overlaps with the regional severe weather season, when tornado watches are common across north Mississippi. Rain falls fairly evenly across the calendar, so campers should expect wet days in any month. Summer is the busiest booking window, with hot, humid days and afternoon thunderstorms common. July is the warmest month in Tupelo, with average highs near 91°F and lows near 71°F, and it is also the month with the most rainfall. Fall is often the most comfortable stretch for RV camping, with cooler nights, lower humidity, and thinning crowds. Winter camping remains possible at state parks, though nights can drop to freezing and lake activity slows.

State park sites in the area are generally paved with full hookups. All sites at Trace State Park have full hookups with electric, water, and sewer, and the developed camping area includes three bathhouses with hot showers, a coin-operated laundromat, and a central sewage dumping station. The Tombigbee campground features a loop of 20 paved sites for RV or tent camping, all with electricity and water hookups, and 18 of the 20 are also equipped with sewer. Expect some rough interior roads at Trace State Park; reviewers consistently note potholes on the approach and inside the campground loops. Cell coverage is patchy but usable on major carriers, and both state parks have coin-operated laundry. Private parks trend simpler. Natchez Trace RV Park is big-rig friendly with pull-through sites, free WiFi, a dump station, and a pet-friendly policy. Smithville Marina Campground offers 50-amp electric, water, and sewer hookups and accommodates rigs up to 50 feet.
