Camping near Oxford, Mississippi
Oxford sits in the hill country of north Mississippi, home to the University of Mississippi and within an hour's drive of several Army Corps of Engineers reservoirs and state parks. RV renters typically base out of lakeside state park campgrounds to the north and south of town, then drive in for Ole Miss games, the Square, and local restaurants. The closest developed campgrounds are John W Kyle State Park on Sardis Lake and Front - Wall Doxey State Park near Holly Springs, both operated by the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks.
John W Kyle State Park occupies a wooded peninsula along Lower Sardis Lake with a large campground offering water and electric sites and a central dump station. Front - Wall Doxey State Park centers on a spring-fed lake and offers water and electric sites in two loops. Further south, George P Cossar State Park sits on Enid Lake and provides developed sites within an easy drive of Oxford.
Closer to town, Travelers Camper Park Campground serves travelers wanting quick access to Oxford. Memphis South Campground and RV Park sits north toward the Tennessee state line and works well as a first-night stop for renters driving down from Memphis International Airport.
Things to do around Oxford
Sardis Lake and Enid Lake dominate the outdoor calendar. Both reservoirs are known for crappie, largemouth bass, and catfish fishing, with boat ramps at John W Kyle State Park and George P Cossar State Park. Swimming areas, disc golf, and lakeside trails round out the day-use options at both parks.
In Oxford itself, the Square hosts restaurants, Square Books, and live music within walking distance of the University of Mississippi campus. Rowan Oak, William Faulkner's former home, is open for tours a short drive from downtown. Game-day weekends fill the Grove with tailgaters and drive campground demand well beyond the football stadium.
Holly Springs National Forest surrounds Front - Wall Doxey State Park with hiking and secondary lakes. The park itself has a nature trail that loops the spring-fed lake and two 18-hole disc golf courses.

Spring, from March through May, is one of the most comfortable stretches for RV travel around Oxford. Wildflowers bloom, lake temperatures rise, and crappie fishing peaks on Sardis and Enid. Expect frequent thunderstorms; late winter and early spring deliver some of the wettest weeks of the year, and sites near the lakeshore can get muddy.
Summer brings heat, humidity, and long daylight hours. Highs routinely reach the upper 80s and low 90s Fahrenheit from June through August, and afternoon storms are common. Lake swimming, boating, and shaded state park sites are the draw. Ole Miss home football weekends in the fall are the single biggest demand driver; campgrounds within an hour of Oxford book out weeks ahead for game Saturdays.
Winter is mild but wet, with December typically the rainiest month. Wall Doxey and Kyle stay open year-round, but some park facilities may be limited during hard freezes when pipes are at risk. Enid Lake also undergoes a seasonal drawdown from late summer into winter, which changes shoreline access at Cossar.
How to book campgrounds near Oxford
Mississippi state parks, including John W Kyle State Park, Front - Wall Doxey State Park, and George P Cossar State Park, use a single online reservation system operated by the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks at reserve.mdwfp.com. Reservations can be made up to 13 months in advance and must be made at least 48 hours before arrival. A 50 percent deposit is required at the time of booking.
For Ole Miss football weekends and the spring crappie run, book as early as the reservation window opens. Cancellations happen daily, so checking back closer to the trip often turns up sites at otherwise sold-out parks.
Private campgrounds such as Travelers Camper Park Campground and Memphis South Campground and RV Park take reservations directly through the operators. Confirm rig length limits and hookup amperage when booking, especially for larger Class A motorhomes.
What to expect on arrival
State park check-in is typically mid-afternoon, with checkout the following late morning. If arrival will be after 5 p.m., call the park in advance so staff can arrange access to the site. Arriving in daylight makes navigation easier because site markings can be faint.
According to the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks, John W Kyle State Park sites feature water and electrical hookups, picnic tables, and grills, with a bathhouse, laundry facility, and central sewage dumping station in the campground. Front - Wall Doxey State Park sites carry water and electric only, split between the Old Front and New Back loops. George P Cossar State Park on Enid Lake also offers developed sites with hookups.
Mississippi state parks limit reservations to a maximum stay tied to park policy, allow one camping unit per pad, and welcome pets in campgrounds but not inside cabins or park buildings.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Oxford, MS
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Oxford, MS?
RV rental in Oxford, MS is one of the more affordable Southern getaways. On RVezy, you'll typically find travel trailers starting around $90 to $130 per night, Class C motorhomes from $150 to $225 per night, and larger Class A rigs running $225 to $350. Pricing climbs during Ole Miss home football weekends and graduation, so book those dates early. For a cheap RV rental in Oxford, target midweek pickups in March, April, or October, when nightly rates and demand both dip. Many hosts also offer weekly discounts of 10 to 20 percent, so even a 4 or 5 night trip can unlock savings. Tip: filter by price range and Instant Book to lock in the best deal fast.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Oxford%2C%20MississippiDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Oxford, Mississippi?
A regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Mississippi. The Mississippi Department of Public Safety does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement for recreational vehicles used personally, even larger Class A motorhomes. To book on RVezy, you'll need to be at least 25 years old with a valid driver's license that is verified through the platform during checkout. Visiting from another country? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home license. Most first-timers are surprised how straightforward it is to pick up the keys and hit Highway 6 toward Sardis Lake or the Natchez Trace.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included with my Oxford RV rental?
You're covered from the moment you book. Every RVezy booking in Oxford includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can focus on tailgating at the Grove or fishing Sardis Lake instead of worrying about what-ifs. During checkout, you choose from multiple protection plan tiers (guests, not hosts, pick the level), each designed to cover damage to the RV during your trip. Tip: review the coverage tiers carefully before booking. The higher tier often pays for itself if you're traveling with kids, pets, or planning longer drives through the Mississippi Delta.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Oxford RV trip?
Booking is low-risk because RVezy (not individual hosts) sets the cancellation policy, and the same standardized policy applies across every reservation. Refunds depend on how far out you cancel relative to your trip start date. If a host cancels on you, RVezy will help you rebook or issue a refund or travel credit. Tip: if severe weather is forecasted near Oxford during Mississippi's spring storm season, contact RVezy support right away so they can walk you through your options. Book with confidence knowing the policy is consistent and applied at the platform level.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an Oxford RV trip?
Yes, Oxford is a wonderfully dog-friendly town and a pet-friendly RV rental in Oxford is easy to find on RVezy. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter to see listings whose hosts welcome dogs (some allow cats too). Once you arrive, Avent Park has shaded walking trails, and the Square itself is famously pup-welcoming, with water bowls outside many shops. Sardis Lake recreation areas allow leashed pets at most campsites, perfect for a morning hike. Tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee and breed details, and ask for their favorite local dog spot. Many Oxford hosts are Ole Miss alums with great recommendations.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Oxford%2C%20MississippiCan the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway in Oxford?
Yes, RV delivery in Oxford is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you're a first-timer. Many RVezy hosts will drive the rig to your campsite at Sardis Lake area campgrounds or even a private driveway in town, then level it, hook up water, sewer, and electric, and walk you through every system. Use the Delivery filter when searching, and check each listing for the delivery radius and fee (typically a flat rate plus per-mile charges beyond a set distance). Tip: delivery is gold during Ole Miss football weekends when traffic around the Square is heavy and you'd rather not navigate a 30-foot motorhome through game-day crowds.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Oxford%2C%20MississippiHow far can I drive on an Oxford RV trip?
You've got plenty of range from Oxford. Popular RV road trips from Oxford include Memphis, Tennessee (about 80 miles north on I-55, perfect for Beale Street and Graceland), Tupelo (about 90 miles southeast via Highway 6 and the Natchez Trace, birthplace of Elvis), the Mississippi Gulf Coast (around 380 miles south), Nashville (about 290 miles northeast), and New Orleans (about 400 miles southwest). Mileage policies vary by host, with many offering 100 to 150 free miles per night and some advertising RV rental with unlimited mileage. Always check the listing's mileage allowance and overage rate before booking. Tip: the Natchez Trace Parkway has no commercial traffic and a 50 mph limit, making it the most stress-free road for an Oxford RV trip.
nps.gov/natr/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Oxford, MS?
You're spoiled for choice with great RV camping near Oxford. Top picks include Oxford RV Park, a local option with full-hookup sites close to town; John W. Kyle State Park on Sardis Lake, with year-round camping, full-hookup sites, and a beach; and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers campgrounds at Sardis Lake such as Clear Springs and Hurricane Landing, offering electric and water sites about 20 to 30 minutes north of Oxford. Tip: Corps of Engineers sites at Sardis Lake book on Recreation.gov up to six months in advance, and they sell out fast for Ole Miss home football Saturdays.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2916When is the best time of year for an RV trip in Oxford?
The sweet spot is mid-March through May and again from late September through October. Oxford has a humid subtropical climate where spring brings highs in the 70s with blooming dogwoods and azaleas, and fall delivers crisp 60s-to-70s days perfect for tailgating at the Grove. July and August routinely hit the low 90s with thick humidity, so if you're traveling then, choose an RV with strong air conditioning and plan early-morning drives. Winters are mild (January highs near 50 F, lows near 31 F), and most campgrounds at Sardis Lake stay open year-round. Tip: the Double Decker Arts Festival in late April and the Oxford Film Festival are great reasons to plan around shoulder season.
weather.gov/meg/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving one in Oxford?
You'll do great, and Oxford is a friendly place for first time renting an RV. Your host gives a full walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, hookups, slide-outs, and waste tanks, and they're a text away during your trip. Highway 6 and I-55 (the main routes in and out of Oxford) are wide and easy to navigate, and once you're at a Sardis Lake campground, you'll find pull-through sites that don't require backing up. Avoid the narrow streets immediately around the Square in a big rig; park at the Oxford-University Stadium lots and walk in instead. Tip: ask your host about a campervan rental in Oxford if you want something compact; Class B vans drive almost like a tall SUV.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV on my trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering tows, tire changes, jump starts, lockouts, and fuel delivery. Your host is also your first-call backup for quirks specific to their rig (think slide-out hiccups or generator questions), and RVezy's customer support team is reachable before, during, and after your trip. Memphis (about 80 miles north) has the closest major-city RV service centers if a deeper repair is ever needed. Tip: take a quick photo or video of the RV exterior, tires, and dash gauges at pickup; it speeds up any service call and gives you a baseline reference if you need to reach roadside help on Highway 7 or I-55.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Oxford RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate road trips are part of the fun. From Oxford, you can cross into Tennessee, Arkansas, Alabama, and Louisiana, all reachable in a day, and your protection plan follows you. A motorhome rental in Oxford makes Memphis (about 80 miles), Little Rock (about 200 miles), and Birmingham (about 230 miles) easy long-weekend targets. Travel to Canada may be permitted depending on the host and protection plan, so message the owner directly from the listing before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not allowed on any RVezy rental because coverage doesn't extend there. Tip: if you're aiming for a multi-state loop, ask the host upfront about mileage allowance and out-of-state notification requirements; many are happy to extend miles for longer routes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on an Oxford RV trip?
Mississippi has some of the lowest fuel prices in the country, which makes an RV road trip from Oxford genuinely budget-friendly. Expect Class B campervans to get 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A rigs 6 to 10 MPG; travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle. As a rough check, a 160-mile round trip to Memphis and back in a Class C at 10 MPG with gas around $3.00 per gallon runs about $48. Tip: fill up before leaving Oxford or in Batesville off I-55, where prices tend to beat in-town stations. The Pilot/Flying J on Highway 6 East is a popular RV-friendly stop with diesel lanes and wide pull-throughs.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Oxford?
Plan ahead for the big moments and you'll be fine. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers campgrounds on Sardis Lake open reservations six months out on Recreation.gov, and they fill quickly for Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day, and every Ole Miss home football weekend. John W. Kyle State Park accepts bookings well in advance through the Mississippi State Parks system. Local in-town RV parks book directly on their own sites and tend to sell out for Ole Miss graduation in May. Tip: for game-day weekends, set a calendar reminder for exactly six months before kickoff and book the second the window opens. Midweek stays in April or October are usually available with just a few days' notice.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2916What are driving conditions like around Oxford?
Driving around Oxford is refreshingly relaxed compared to big cities. Highway 6 and I-55 are wide four-lane routes with gentle grades through the rolling hills of north Mississippi, and rural roads like Highway 7 toward Holly Springs are scenic and lightly trafficked. Avoid the streets right around the Oxford Square in a long RV; they're tight, brick-paved in spots, and busy on weekends. Watch for sudden thunderstorms in spring and summer, and slow down on wet roads since Mississippi clay can get slick. Tip: tornado watches occasionally pop up March through May; the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency offers alerts and resources to keep you informed wherever you are.
msema.org/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Oxford?
Local campgrounds are well-equipped for a comfortable Oxford RV trip. In-town RV parks typically offer 30 and 50-amp full hookups (water, sewer, electric), paved or gravel pads, hot-shower bathhouses, and laundry. Sardis Lake Corps of Engineers campgrounds provide electric and water at most sites, shower buildings, boat launches, and access to swimming beaches. State park and Corps of Engineers sites usually have a centralized dump station near the exit, plus potable water fill stations. Tip: cell service is solid in town and patchy but workable around Sardis Lake. If you need to top off fresh water mid-trip, most Corps campgrounds have free fill-up spigots during posted hours, so carry a drinking-water-safe hose.
mvk.usace.army.mil/Missions/Recreation/Sardis-Lake/What's inside a typical RV rental in Oxford?
You'll feel right at home. Most Oxford RV rentals on RVezy come fully equipped: a queen or king bed, convertible dinette and sofa bunks (so a Class C can comfortably sleep 4 to 6), a full kitchen with fridge, freezer, microwave, stove, and sink, a private bathroom with shower and toilet, roof air conditioning, furnace heat, and a propane water heater. Many include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor speakers, and an onboard generator for off-grid power. Seatbelted seating varies by rig, so confirm the count if you're traveling with a group. Tip: ask your host whether the RV includes a Wi-Fi hotspot, an Ole Miss tailgate awning setup, or outdoor chairs and a grill, popular add-ons that save you from packing extras for game day.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Oxford%2C%20MississippiWhat add-ons and options can I add to my Oxford RV rental?
Hosts in Oxford offer plenty of upgrades to customize your trip. Common add-ons include linen and bedding packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits with pots, plates, and utensils ($25 to $50), generator hours, propane refills, portable grills, bike racks, and tailgate gear (popular for Ole Miss home games at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium). Pickup and dropoff are usually at the host's address, with most offering a flexible 1 to 2 hour walkthrough window. Mileage policies typically range from 100 to 150 free miles per night with overage fees of $0.30 to $0.50 per mile, while some advertise RV rental with unlimited mileage. Tip: book delivery and setup as an add-on if you're nervous about driving; many hosts include the first few miles of delivery free.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Oxford%2C%20MississippiHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book your RV rental in Mississippi through RVezy, you pay through the platform with a credit or debit card; never send money directly to a host. A refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your card before your trip (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV's value) and released after the host confirms the rig was returned clean and undamaged. The platform handles refunds, so you have a clear paper trail. Tip: do a quick walkaround video at pickup and drop-off and message it through the RVezy chat. It timestamps the RV's condition and makes deposit returns smooth, especially for first-time renters.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhere can I dump tanks and refill water near Oxford?
You've got easy options around Oxford for waste and water. John W. Kyle State Park and Sardis Lake Corps of Engineers campgrounds have on-site dump stations and potable water fill-ups available to overnight guests. For travelers passing through, large truck stops on Highway 6 and along I-55 near Batesville often offer RV dump access for a small fee, though availability varies, so call ahead. Boondocking overnight is not generally allowed in Oxford city limits or on the Square. Tip: dump tanks the morning you leave a campground rather than mid-trip; it's faster and your host will appreciate getting the rig back fresh.
