Campgrounds and RV parks near Petal, MS

Most trips center on water and forest. Paul B Johnson State Park serves as a base to explore De Soto National Forest, which covers over 500,000 acres of southern Mississippi pinelands, swamps, lakes, and rivers, with miles of hiking trails and canoeing routes. The park itself has a nature trail, an easily accessible boat launch, a swimming beach, and a playground, plus a visitor center, picnic pavilions, splash pad, and disc golf. In town, families can float the Okatoma Creek, tour the Armed Forces Museum at Camp Shelby, or visit attractions in Hattiesburg proper. Camp Shelby is about 5 miles north of Paul B Johnson State Park, and the University of Southern Mississippi is roughly 15 miles north, making game weekends a common draw.

Southern Mississippi runs on a long warm season. Summers are long, hot, and oppressive, winters are short and cold, and it is wet and partly cloudy year round. Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV travel, with lower humidity and fewer thunderstorms than midsummer. Winter camping is realistic here. Paul B Johnson State Park is open year-round, and though summer is the busiest season, winter weather is often pleasant. Expect occasional cold fronts and rain, but rarely hard freezes. Summer is peak booking season and also the wettest stretch of the warm months, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, with the highest activity in August and September, and travelers should track Gulf systems and be prepared to adjust plans. Rainfall is abundant and spread fairly evenly throughout the year, though winter is typically the wettest season and October is the driest month, which makes fall a favorite window for dry, mild trips.

Sites near Petal are generally shaded by pine and hardwood. The Hattiesburg/Okatoma KOA Holiday has 30 amp and 50 amp electric hookups, water hookups, and sewer hookups, and accommodates large rigs. At Paul B Johnson State Park, three bathhouses with hot showers and restrooms are located in the campground, and an RV sewage dump station is located off the main park drive near the campgrounds. Park rules are straightforward. Fireworks, portable generators, and metal detectors are prohibited, open carry of firearms may be prohibited in designated areas, and one camping unit is allowed per camp pad. Cancellation penalties may apply, and Mississippi State Parks uses a voucher system for any balance due rather than issuing refunds. Expect humidity, mosquitoes in warm months, and the occasional pothole on entry roads at private parks. Cell coverage is generally solid along US 49.
