Campgrounds and RV parks near Richton, MS

Water recreation is the main draw. Geiger Lake at Paul B Johnson State Park is stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill, bream, shellcracker, crappie, and channel catfish, and swimming is permitted in a designated beach area with seasonal lifeguards. Maynor Creek Lake supports boating, water skiing, kayaking, and swimming in warm months. On land, Paul B Johnson has two 18-basket disc golf courses, Desert Fox and Arctic Fox, open to day-use visitors and campers, plus nature trails that wind through loblolly and longleaf pines, oaks, hickories, and dogwoods. The adjacent De Soto National Forest adds miles of trails and paddling routes. For rainy days, Hattiesburg is a short drive west for the Armed Forces Museum at Camp Shelby, the African American Military History Museum, and family-friendly restaurants.

The Richton area has a humid subtropical climate with mild winters, hot summers, and rainfall year-round. Summers are long, hot, and humid, and winters are short and cool with wet, cloudy stretches. Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV camping, with lower humidity and manageable daytime highs. Summer brings peak demand at lakefront sites. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, and heat indices routinely climb well past the actual air temperature. Families targeting the swim beach and water sports at Geiger Lake or Maynor Creek should book early for weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day, when lifeguards are typically on duty at Paul B Johnson. Winter is the quiet season. Cabins and RV loops at Paul B Johnson stay open, and cool, clear days are good for hiking, disc golf, and fishing, though occasional freezes and heavy winter rains do occur. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, with the highest risk of tropical impacts in this part of Mississippi from August through October, so travelers should monitor National Hurricane Center forecasts and keep a flexible plan.

Expect wooded, pine-shaded sites with a mix of pull-throughs and back-ins. Paul B Johnson has three bathhouses with hot showers and restrooms, and an RV sewage dump station off the main park drive, with RV sites offering full hookups on 20, 30, and 50 amp service. Cell coverage is generally usable but can be spotty in the deeper forest loops. Parks in this area are pet-friendly with restrictions. Pets must be on a leash at all times, cannot be left unattended, and are not allowed in or around cabin areas at Mississippi state parks. Quiet hours from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM are enforced at both Paul B Johnson and Maynor Creek. Bring insect repellent from spring through fall, since mosquitoes and biting flies are active near water. Expect thunderstorms to roll through quickly in summer, and plan for shaded, humid conditions rather than dry heat.
