Campgrounds and RV parks near Shaw, MS

Fishing dominates the recreation calendar in the Delta. The 20-mile-long Lake Chicot, formed centuries ago when the Mississippi River changed course, provides excellent fishing year-round for bass, crappie, catfish, and bream, and the on-site marina offers boat rentals including fishing boats, kayaks, and personal watercraft, plus a launch ramp for visitors bringing their own boats. Birders travel here specifically for the flyway. The park's location in one of the largest migratory flyways in the country makes it exceptional for birdwatching. At Leroy Percy State Park, visitors can hike the Alligator Lake Trail which winds by the lake and passes through the natural habitat of wildlife of a delta hardwood forest, with disc golf, picnic areas, playgrounds, freshwater fishing, a boat launch, and seasonal hunting also on offer. Hunters should note that Leroy Percy offers seasonal pursuit of deer, squirrel, duck, and dove, with regulations that differ from the rest of Mississippi and require checking in at the park office.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable RV seasons in the Shaw area. Daytime highs are moderate, humidity is lower than in midsummer, and fishing activity peaks. Bass can be found in the lake all year round, while crappie and bream can be found on the upper end of the lake, particularly during spring and fall. Spring is also the wettest stretch, with frequent thunderstorms rolling across the Delta. Summers are long and demanding. In the Greenville area the summers are long, hot, and muggy; the winters are short, cold, and wet; and it is partly cloudy year round. Expect heat indices well above the actual air temperature, biting insects near standing water, and afternoon storms. Seasonal amenities help: at Lake Chicot, the pool is open seasonally from Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend, and the store and marina offer food, gifts, fuel and bait for sale and also rents boats, motors and personal water craft. Winter brings mild days, cool nights, and steady rain. Waterfowl hunting and quiet weekday camping are the draw. Campers consistently note the campground's quiet atmosphere, particularly during weekdays and cooler months when occupancy drops significantly.

Sites in this region tend to be flat, shaded by hardwoods or pecan trees, and close to water. At Leroy Percy, the 16 RV campsites are all back-ins, with paved pads, fire rings, picnic tables, a small grill at each site, a bathhouse with hot showers, laundry facility, and dump station. Cabins and a group camp are also on the grounds. At Lake Chicot, the campground features 122 campsites set in a scenic pecan grove, offering a range of accommodations from Class AAA sites with water, 50-amp electric, and sewer hookups to more basic sites. Area A contains the premium sites with full hookups supporting both 30 and 50-amp service, while Area F offers full hookups limited to 30 amps on shorter sites. Expect wildlife close to camp. Wildlife sightings include deer, raccoons, pelicans, and ducks throughout the property. Cell coverage is uneven in the Delta, and mosquitoes are persistent near the lakes from spring through fall.
