Campgrounds and RV parks near Smithville, MS

Fishing dominates the local recreation menu. The Smithville Pool on the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway is a popular access point for public fishing, with bass, crappie, bream, and catfish the common catches. Boat ramps along the waterway give RVers direct water access for day trips on the channel and connected oxbows. Tombigbee State Park, about six miles south of Tupelo, is centered on 90-acre Lake Lee, stocked with bass, bream, and catfish. Park activities include picnic areas, a playground, disc golf, a nature trail, mountain bike trails, and a boat launch for trolling-speed boats. Tupelo itself adds Elvis Presley's birthplace, the Natchez Trace Parkway headquarters and visitor center, and shopping at The Mall at Barnes Crossing for rainy-day backup plans.

Northeast Mississippi has a humid subtropical climate. Summers are hot and humid with daytime highs regularly in the low 90s, while winters are mild with highs typically in the 50s and overnight lows near freezing. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, with daytime highs in the 70s and cooler nights for sleeping. Spring is also the region's peak severe weather season. North Mississippi sits in a corridor prone to tornado outbreaks, and Smithville itself was devastated by an EF5 tornado, so monitoring NOAA Weather Radio from March through May is essential. Summer brings heavy humidity, frequent afternoon thunderstorms, and biting insects near the waterway. Precipitation falls year-round, with March typically the wettest month and warm-season rain tending to arrive in short bursts rather than all-day soakers. Fall is the quietest season for campground availability, with cooler nights, lower humidity, and excellent fishing on Tenn-Tom pools. Winter camping is feasible, but expect overnight freezes and occasional ice events.

Public campgrounds in the area typically offer paved pads, water and electric hookups, and modern restrooms with showers, though full sewer hookups are not universal. At Tombigbee State Park, the campground is a loop of 20 paved sites available for RV or tent camping, with all sites on electricity and water and eighteen of them also on sewer. A dump station is located on the main park road for campers on the two electric-and-water-only sites. Cell coverage is generally reliable near Tupelo and along US-45 but can thin out at remote waterway sites. Expect mosquitoes, ticks, and chiggers from late spring through early fall, especially near standing water. Bring leveling blocks for state and waterway sites, since lakefront pads are often graded toward the water. Quiet hours are enforced at public parks, and most have leash rules for pets.
