Campgrounds and RV parks near West Hattiesburg, MS

Water is the main draw. Paul B. Johnson State Park offers a visitor center, picnic tables and grills, picnic pavilions, playgrounds, a splash pad, disc golf, swimming, and nature trails on Geiger Lake, with full-hookup RV sites in the campground. Little Black Creek centers on a large stocked lake with a swimming beach, fishing, canoeing and kayaking, and a splash pad for younger children. The Okatoma Creek corridor near the KOA is a regional favourite for float trips and paddling day-outs. In town, the University of Southern Mississippi campus, the Hattiesburg Zoo, and the Longleaf Trace rail-trail give families rain-day and evening options. Camp Shelby, home to the Armed Forces Museum, is located 5 miles north of Paul B. Johnson State Park and is worth a half-day stop for history-minded travellers.

Hattiesburg experiences a humid subtropical climate, characterized by hot summers and cool winters. Rainfall is abundant and spread fairly evenly throughout the year, though winter is typically the wettest season and fall the driest. Heavy seasonal downpours or afternoon thunderstorms can sometimes occur during the warmer months. That pattern shapes when to book. Spring and fall are the sweet spots for RV travel: daytime highs are comfortable, humidity is lower than midsummer, and campsite demand climbs around University of Southern Mississippi football weekends and school-holiday windows. The University of Southern Mississippi is just a 20-minute drive north of Paul B. Johnson State Park, making it a popular spot for a football weekend, so lake sites fill quickly on game days. Summer is hot and sticky, with frequent afternoon storms, but lakefront sites at Geiger Lake and Little Black Creek stay popular because swimming beaches and splash pads are open. Winter is mild by North American standards and the state park stays open year round, but expect wet stretches and occasional overnight freezes. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, with the highest risk of inland impacts in August and September.

Sites are generally shaded by pine and hardwood canopy, which helps in summer heat but means checking clearances for taller rigs. Paul B. Johnson State Park reopened after a renovation with upgraded roads and pads, full hook-ups, and 12 renovated cabins plus two duplexes, so pad type is worth noting when picking a site. Little Black Creek offers RV sites and cabins along the lake, with full-hookup sites on hard pads and direct water access from many spots. The Hattiesburg/Okatoma KOA has 30 and 50 amp electric, water and sewer hookups, and wifi. Expect mosquitoes and biting flies from late spring through early fall, especially near water. Bring bug repellent, a screen room if you have one, and plan for humidity: a dehumidifier or good roof-vent fan makes a real difference in an RV during July and August.
