Campgrounds and RV parks near Yazoo City, MS

The Mississippi Petrified Forest is the region's headline attraction, with a self-guided nature trail past fossilized logs and an on-site museum of gems, minerals, and fossils. It was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1966, and staying at Mississippi Petrified Forest Campground puts families steps from the trailhead. Holmes County State Park is built around two lakes, English Lake and Odum Lake, stocked with bass, bream, and catfish, with interpretive nature trails and playgrounds. Askew's Landing RV Campground has a stocked fishing lake, swimming pool, kayaks, pedal boats, and a gem-panning setup for kids. Inside Jackson, Le Fleurs Bluff State Park offers an 18-hole disc golf course, a nine-hole golf course, Mayes Lake fishing, and walking access to the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science and Mississippi Children's Museum.

Spring and fall are the practical windows for RV travel in central Mississippi. From March through May, daytime highs climb from the mid-60s to low 80s Fahrenheit, wildflowers bloom along the Trace, and state park campgrounds are open with lighter midweek demand. Spring thunderstorms are frequent, so expect passing rain. Summer is hot and humid. June through August highs average around 90°F with overnight lows in the low 70s, and afternoon thunderstorms are routine. Shaded sites are worth seeking out, and hookups with 50-amp service help run air conditioning through the worst heat. This is also Atlantic hurricane season: remnants of Gulf systems can push heavy rain and wind into the Yazoo Basin from August into October. Fall brings the most comfortable stretch, with September through November highs easing from the mid-80s into the 60s and lower humidity. Winter is short and mild but wet, with December among the rainiest months. Freezing nights occur but hard freezes are brief, and most area campgrounds stay open year-round.

Terrain here is low, wooded, and often damp. Sites at Mississippi Petrified Forest Campground are grass or dirt pads under hardwood and pine cover, which provides shade but can hold moisture after storms; leveling blocks are useful, and only a few sites suit larger coaches. Askew's Landing offers a mix of pull-through and back-in sites with more open layouts. Hookup patterns vary. Holmes County State Park and Le Fleurs Bluff State Park offer water and electric hookups with central bathhouses and dump stations. Mississippi Petrified Forest Campground has 20, 30, and 50-amp service with water and sewer at most sites. Askew's Landing has full-hookup sites plus a pool and camp store. Cell service is generally reliable near I-20, I-55, and US-49 corridors, weaker on Delta backroads. Biting insects are common from late spring through early fall, so pack repellent.
