Camping near Chesterfield, Missouri
Chesterfield sits in west St. Louis County, roughly 20 miles from downtown St. Louis and within easy reach of both the Missouri River valley and the wooded hills of the Ozark border country. RV travelers use the area as a base for city attractions, Katy Trail rides, and Six Flags trips, with a mix of state park, private RV resort, and family-focused campground options within a short drive.
The closest public campground is Babler State Park in nearby Wildwood, a wooded park with basic and electric sites managed by Missouri State Parks. On the private side, Sundermeier RV Park in St. Charles offers a full-service concrete-pad park adjacent to the Katy Trail, while Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort: Six Flags and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp Resort focus on families with pools, planned activities, and cabins.
Route 66 travelers often choose St. Louis West / Historic Route 66 KOA Holiday in Eureka, which puts campers minutes from Six Flags St. Louis and about a half-hour drive from the Gateway Arch.
Things to do near Chesterfield
Outdoor activities cluster around the Missouri River bluffs and the surrounding state park system. Babler State Park draws visitors for its interpretive center, forested terrain, and multiple miles of trail, with hiking, biking, and horseback riding as popular activities. The park also has a paved bike path suitable for families and casual riders.
St. Charles, a short drive north, is the eastern terminus of the Katy Trail, a rail-to-trail route that runs across most of Missouri. Sundermeier RV Park sits adjacent to a city park and the Katy Trail, giving campers direct access for hiking and biking.
For families with kids, Six Flags St. Louis in Eureka is a major draw, along with the water park, mini-golf, and character activities offered at the nearby Jellystone properties. Downtown St. Louis adds the Gateway Arch, the Missouri Botanical Garden, Forest Park, and the St. Louis Zoo.

Peak camping season in the Chesterfield area runs from late spring through early fall. Weekends around Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day fill first, and Six Flags weekends drive strong demand at the Eureka campgrounds.
Spring brings the heaviest rainfall and the region's severe-weather season. The spring months of March through May are normally the wettest, and St. Louis sits just east of the heart of Tornado Alley, so tornadoes are more likely in spring, though they can also occur in autumn. Summer is hot and humid with frequent afternoon thunderstorms, and heat indices often push into the mid-90s.
Winter is the shoulder season. At Babler, the restrooms and shower house are seasonal, and only a frost-free spigot is available during the colder months. Private RV parks like Sundermeier and the KOA in Eureka operate year-round, and the KOA offers extended-stay options in the off-season.

Renting from Donna was a fantastic experience from start to finish. Her communication was prompt, clear, and welcoming, making pickup and drop-off completely hassle-free. The camper was exceptionally clean, well maintained, and stocked with everything we needed, and the beds were remarkably comfortable for a great night’s sleep after a long day outside. Donna is a top-tier host, and I would absolutely rent from her again in a heartbeat!

We had a great time renting this camper! Ray was awesome to work with. He went over everything with us when we picked it up and was always quick to respond if we had any questions. The camper was really clean and had everything we needed for the weekend. It was great to get away with the family annd enjoy some time together without having to worry about anything. We had an awesome weekend, made some great memories, and will definitely be renting from Ray again! Do yourself a favor and take your family camping for a few days too. Unplug, enjoy the time together, and make some memories. You won’t regret it!

How to book campgrounds near Chesterfield
Missouri State Parks handles reservations for Babler State Park through a central system. Campsites can be reserved up to 12 months in advance, expanded from the previous six-month window. Reservations can be made online through the state's icampmo portal or by calling 877-422-6766. A two-night minimum stay applies to weekend reservations, and the two nights must be Friday and Saturday or Saturday and Sunday.
Private parks book directly. Sundermeier RV Park takes reservations through its own website. St. Louis West / Historic Route 66 KOA Holiday books through the KOA site or app, and the Jellystone properties near Six Flags book through their own resort sites. For summer weekends and any Six Flags event dates, booking six to eight weeks out is recommended.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a mix of wooded state park sites and full-service private parks. At Babler, RVers and tent campers will find shaded campsites under a canopy of trees, with both basic and electric sites available. Sites are more rustic than the private parks, and cellular signal can be spotty under the tree cover.
Private parks in the area lean toward concrete pads, full hookups, and family amenities. Sundermeier offers level concrete pads, pull-thrus, wide paved streets, ADA-compliant restrooms and laundry, 30 and 50 amp electric service, cable TV, and Wi-Fi. The Jellystone and KOA properties in Eureka add pools, jumping pillows, mini-golf, and organized kids' activities.
Noise varies by location. Sundermeier sits near highway and rail corridors, while Babler and the Eureka parks are quieter and more wooded. Bugs and humidity ramp up quickly from June through August.
