The Katy Trail is the anchor activity. The crushed-limestone path runs directly through Marthasville and is open year-round from sunrise to sunset. Cycling, walking, and running are the main uses, and multiple wineries sit within a short ride of town. For water and cave-country trips, families head south to Meramec State Park, where the Meramec River offers floating suitable for beginners, naturalist-led tours of Fisher Cave with hand-held lights, and more than 13 miles of hiking trails. Babler State Park adds about 13 miles of hiking trails, a paved bicycle path, a visitor center, and equestrian routes. Fishing, playgrounds at the larger resorts, and short drives to historic Hermann and Augusta round out the trip options.

Spring and early summer are the busiest booking windows. Katy Trail traffic climbs sharply once wildflowers appear, and Missouri State Parks campgrounds in the region typically require advance reservations during peak weekends. Spring is also the wettest part of the year, with heavy rainfall events that can flood lower-elevation, riverfront sites; Meramec State Park sits along the Meramec River and lower loops have been closed on short notice during high-water events. Summer brings the heaviest visitation. Weekend and holiday stays typically require a two-night minimum at Babler, and popular sites at nearby state parks can fill months in advance. Heat, humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms are routine from June through August. Fall is the shoulder-season sweet spot: cooler temperatures, harvest activity at area wineries, and lighter crowds. Winter is quiet. Water at individual sites is turned off at Meramec from November through April, restrooms and showers at Babler close for the season on November 1, and only limited winter camping remains available.

Site quality varies by park. Babler State Park has 73 wooded sites, with basic, electric, and sewer/electric/water options; the campground accommodates rigs between 20 and 52 feet, and each site includes a paved parking pad, picnic table, and fire ring with grill. Meramec State Park is larger, with roughly 210 sites ranging from basic tent pads to full hookups, plus cabins and a motel. Expect limited cellular service inside the heavily treed river valleys, and note that satellite reception can be blocked by tree cover at Meramec. WiFi is offered at some campgrounds but is often slow. Riverfront pitches are scenic but come with tradeoffs: bugs in summer and flood risk in wet years. Bring bug spray, level blocks for gravel and grass pads, and a printed map, since cell coverage cannot be counted on.
