RV camping near New Florence, Missouri
New Florence sits along Interstate 70 in Montgomery County, central Missouri, roughly halfway between St. Louis and Columbia. The location works well as a base for RV travelers exploring the Loutre River valley, Missouri wine country to the south, and the Katy Trail corridor. Small-town amenities are limited, but fuel, groceries, and I-70 access make logistics straightforward.
Campground options within a short drive range from private RV parks to a state park with archaeological significance. Hickory Ridge Campground LLC and Lazy Day Campground offer private-park amenities close to town. Graham Cave State Park, run by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, provides public campsites near a National Historic Landmark cave. Lost Valley Lake Resort adds a lake-oriented membership resort experience, and Back Forty Bluegrass Park and Campground caters to music-event travelers.
Most RV travelers use New Florence as a one- or two-night stop while crossing the state, or as a weekend base for hiking, fishing, and river access along the Loutre and Missouri rivers.
Things to do around New Florence
Graham Cave State Park is a prime hiking location, and a boat ramp to the Loutre River provides access for boating and fishing. Interpretive exhibits along the trail detail the archaeological significance of the cave, which is protected behind fencing but visible from the trail. Several trails wind through the park's forests and glades.
Beyond the state park, the area gives easy access to Missouri wine country around Hermann and Augusta, the Katy Trail State Park for cycling, and float trips on nearby rivers. Back Forty Bluegrass Park and Campground hosts acoustic music events that draw regional crowds. Lost Valley Lake Resort adds swimming, fishing, and lake recreation for families staying multiple nights.

Central Missouri has four distinct seasons. Summer brings warm, humid weather with afternoon thunderstorms; this is peak camping season and demand on weekends is highest around holidays. Spring delivers wildflowers, greening forests, and higher river flows, but also the region's most active severe-weather window with thunderstorm and tornado risk from March through May.
Fall is often the most comfortable stretch for RV travel, with cool nights, lower humidity, and hardwood color typically peaking in mid to late October. Bug pressure drops and weekend availability improves after Labor Day. Winter is cold, with periodic snow and ice; many private parks reduce hours or close, and state-park water systems are often shut down.
At Graham Cave State Park, the campground is open year-round, but reservations are only accepted from April through October. Modern showers and running water are available April through October only, so travelers need to bring their own potable water for off-season stays.
How to book campgrounds near New Florence
Graham Cave State Park is reserved through the Missouri State Parks system at icampmo.com or by phone at 877-422-6766, with a booking window that opens 12 months ahead of arrival. Popular weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day should be locked in well in advance. From November through March, all sites are first-come, first-served.
Private parks including Hickory Ridge Campground LLC, Lazy Day Campground, and Back Forty Bluegrass Park and Campground are booked directly with the operator by phone or through their websites. Lost Valley Lake Resort is a membership-based property, so confirm access rules and guest policies before booking. Reserve early for holiday weekends, bluegrass event dates, and October color weekends when demand spikes across the region.
What to expect on the ground
Roads in and around New Florence are generally RV-friendly, with I-70 as the main artery and paved county routes reaching most campgrounds. Expect gravel or dirt spurs at some private parks. Cell coverage along the interstate is reliable but can drop in wooded river bottoms near Graham Cave.
The Graham Cave campground has 34 basic sites and 18 electric sites, open year-round, with pads ranging from 33 to 62 feet. Modern restrooms with hot showers, flush toilets, a dump station, and laundry are available from April through October near the host site; vault toilets remain open in the off-season.
Summer sites can be humid with mosquitoes near water, so pack repellent and set up shade. Ticks are common in wooded areas from spring through fall.
