Old Jamestown camping overview
Old Jamestown is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in St. Louis County, Missouri, sitting northwest of the city of St. Louis near the Missouri River. For RVers, it works as a quiet suburban base with reasonable access to downtown St. Louis attractions, the Missouri and Mississippi river corridors, and interstates I-270 and I-70.
Most full-hookup RV options sit a short drive across the metro area rather than inside the CDP itself. Sundermeier RV Park in nearby St. Charles offers concrete pads and 50-amp service adjacent to the Katy Trail, while St. Louis NE/I-270/Granite City KOA Journey sits across the Mississippi in Illinois with pull-through sites close to I-270. DraftKings at Casino Queen RV Park and Safari RV Park round out the metro-area privately operated choices.
For state-park style camping, Horseshoe Lake State Park in Madison County, Illinois surrounds a large horseshoe-shaped lake and covers roughly 2,960 acres, with about 1,200 acres of water. Together these options cover a range of trip styles, from urban-adjacent overnights to lakeside stays.
Things to do near Old Jamestown
The area is defined by two rivers. Boating, fishing and birding are common pastimes given proximity to both the Missouri and Mississippi, and St. Louis County parks offer river access and short nature loops within a few miles of Old Jamestown.
Central St. Louis attractions are roughly a 20 to 25 minute drive: Gateway Arch National Park, Busch Stadium, the St. Louis Zoo and the Missouri Botanical Garden. Guests staying at the St. Louis NE/I-270/Granite City KOA Journey can walk or bike the Historic Route 66 Chain of Rocks Bridge over the Mississippi.
On the Missouri side, historic St. Charles sits adjacent to Sundermeier RV Park, with the Katy Trail State Park running past the property for hiking and cycling. Horseshoe Lake is a popular fishing location that also offers bird watching, cycling with easy access to the MCT Schoolhouse Trail, playgrounds, restrooms, and picnic spots.

St. Louis has a true four-season continental climate. Summers are warm and humid, with July averaging a daily high near 89.5 degrees Fahrenheit and a low near 71.5 degrees. Temperatures reach the 100s Fahrenheit on roughly three days a year on average. Peak RV demand tracks school breaks between Memorial Day and Labor Day, so book metro-area private parks several weeks ahead.
Spring is a wet stretch, with frequent thunderstorms and occasional flood impacts along low-lying areas near the Missouri and Mississippi rivers. Sites can be soft after heavy rain. Fall is often the most comfortable season for touring: drier, with steadier temperatures and colorful hardwoods along the river bluffs.
Winters are cold but rarely extreme. The city normally sees about 19 days a year that never warm above freezing, with frosty days most common in January. Many public campgrounds close during the cold months, though several private parks in the metro area operate year-round for self-contained rigs.

We had a great time renting this camper! Ray was awesome to work with. He went over everything with us when we picked it up and was always quick to respond if we had any questions. The camper was really clean and had everything we needed for the weekend. It was great to get away with the family annd enjoy some time together without having to worry about anything. We had an awesome weekend, made some great memories, and will definitely be renting from Ray again! Do yourself a favor and take your family camping for a few days too. Unplug, enjoy the time together, and make some memories. You won’t regret it!

How to book campgrounds near Old Jamestown
Private parks in the metro area take direct online reservations through their own websites. Sundermeier RV Park, St. Louis NE/I-270/Granite City KOA Journey, DraftKings at Casino Queen RV Park, and Safari RV Park all confirm sites through their operator sites, with cancellation windows and deposit requirements that vary by park. Verify policies at time of booking.
Horseshoe Lake State Park operates differently: the campground is open from May 1 to September 30, campers are allowed to stay 7 days in a 30-day period, and the park does not take reservations for camping. Sites are handled on a first-come basis at the site office. For peak summer weekends and any St. Louis Cardinals home stand, reserve private-park sites well in advance.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a mix of urban-edge RV parks and one primitive state-park campground. Sundermeier RV Park offers concrete pads with 30/50 amp service, on-site laundry and Wi-Fi, though sites sit close together and highway and airport noise is noticeable. The St. Louis NE/I-270/Granite City KOA Journey is big-rig friendly with full hookups, a seasonal pool, a jumping pillow and a playground.
Horseshoe Lake State Park Campground has 25 single-family campsites for tents, trailers and RVs, with the campground a short walk to the lake and a few miles from the Mississippi River, each site with a table, fire ring and grill, and the campground has drinking water, vault toilets and a dump station. There are no showers or hookups at the campground, and primitive class C camping is available from May 1 through September 30. Verify current access before arrival: recent closures have affected Chouteau Island access and the campground road due to bridge repair and causeway work.

How much does an RV rental in Old Jamestown typically cost?
Good news: an RV rental in Old Jamestown is one of the more budget-friendly ways to explore the St. Louis area. On RVezy, travel trailers near Old Jamestown often start around $90 to $140 per night, while Class C motorhomes typically range from $175 to $250 per night, depending on size and season. To find a cheap RV rental in Old Jamestown, look for weekly discounts (many hosts offer 10 to 20 percent off), book mid-week, or travel in April or October when demand dips. Pro tip: filter by Instant Book and sort by price low to high to spot the best value listings near North County before they get snapped up for Cardinals home stands or Fair Saint Louis weekend.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Old%20Jamestown%2C%20MissouriWhat kind of driver's license do I need to rent an RV in Old Jamestown?
Great news for first-timers: a regular Missouri (or out-of-state) driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Old Jamestown. Missouri does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal RVs, even larger Class A motorhomes. To book on RVezy, approved drivers are generally required to be 25 or older, and your ID is verified through the platform during checkout so there is no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you are set. Most renters in St. Louis County are surprised how quickly the verification step goes, often in just a few minutes.

Yes, every RV rental in Old Jamestown booked through RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance included, so you can hit Interstate 270 with confidence. You select your protection level during checkout (not the host), and the plan covers physical damage to the RV during your trip up to the limits of the tier you choose. While it is not traditional auto insurance, it gives renters meaningful financial peace of mind for everything from a chipped windshield on Lindbergh Boulevard to a fender bump at a Missouri State Park gate. Pro tip: review the coverage tiers during checkout and pick the level that matches your comfort with deductibles before exploring Old Jamestown RV trip routes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Old Jamestown RV booking?
Booking is low risk: RVezy sets a consistent cancellation policy across the platform (hosts do not set their own), which includes a full money-back grace period shortly after you book. After that window, refund amounts depend on how close you are to your trip start date, with additional consideration for special circumstances like natural disasters, which St. Louis renters sometimes face with spring tornado watches or Mississippi River flooding. The exact terms are explained clearly on the RVezy website during checkout, so you will know what to expect before you confirm. Pro tip: book earlier rather than later, you will lock in the best North County rigs and still enjoy that grace-period flexibility.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an Old Jamestown RV trip?
Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental in Old Jamestown is easy to find on RVezy, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you will see plenty of listings from hosts who welcome four-legged co-pilots. Many local hosts charge a small pet cleaning fee (typically $25 to $75 per trip). Once you are rolling, your pup will love the off-leash trails at Quail Ridge Park in Wentzville, the dog park at St. Louis West / Historic Route 66 KOA in Eureka, and the dog-friendly patios in nearby Florissant. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any breed or size details, and ask about a quick post-trip vacuum to keep your security deposit untouched.
koa.com/campgrounds/st-louis-west/Can the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway in Old Jamestown?
Yes, RV delivery in Old Jamestown is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who would rather skip driving a 30-foot rig through Halls Ferry traffic. Many hosts will deliver and set up the RV right at your campsite at places like 370 Lakeside Park in St. Peters, Sundermeier RV Park in St. Charles, or directly to your driveway in the Old Jamestown area. The host handles leveling, hookups, and a full walkthrough so you are not figuring it out alone. Delivery fees are usually based on mileage from the host's location. Pro tip: filter by Delivery on RVezy and message hosts about flat-rate delivery to nearby Cuivre River State Park, about an hour north.
mostateparks.com/park/cuivre-river-state-parkHow far can I drive on an RV road trip from Old Jamestown?
You've got incredible range from Old Jamestown, and most hosts offer generous daily mileage allowances (typically 100 to 150 free miles per day, with some listings offering RV rental with unlimited mileage for an upgraded rate). Popular road trip destinations include Lake of the Ozarks (about 170 miles southwest), Mark Twain National Forest (130 miles south), Hannibal and Mark Twain country (115 miles north), Memphis (290 miles south on I-55), and Branson (250 miles southwest). Each works beautifully as a 3 to 7 day loop. Pro tip: if you're planning a longer Old Jamestown RV trip toward Colorado or the Smokies, message hosts up front about mileage packages so you avoid per-mile overage fees at drop-off.
modot.org/Where are the best campgrounds near Old Jamestown to stay overnight?
You are surrounded by great options for RV camping near Old Jamestown. Top picks include 370 Lakeside Park in St. Peters (about 20 minutes, lakefront with full hookups), Sundermeier RV Park in St. Charles (about 20 minutes, with Katy Trail access), Cahokia RV Parque just across the river in Illinois (about 20 minutes, with skyline views), St. Louis West / Historic Route 66 KOA Holiday in Eureka (about 45 minutes, with pool and dog park), and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park in Eureka (about 45 minutes, great for families). Overnight parking on residential Old Jamestown streets is not allowed, so a reserved campsite is your best bet. Pro tip: book Jellystone summer weekends 60 to 90 days out, they fill fast.
stcharlesparks.com/197/370-Lakeside-ParkWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Old Jamestown?
Spring (April to early June) and fall (mid-September through October) are the sweet spots for an Old Jamestown RV trip. Daytime temperatures sit comfortably in the 60s to upper 70s, humidity is manageable, and the Missouri River bluffs glow with dogwood blossoms in spring and brilliant oak and maple color in fall. Summers in the St. Louis area can hit the mid 90s with serious humidity, so plan early-morning drives and AC-equipped rigs if you're traveling in July or August. Winters are mild but variable, with occasional ice storms. Pro tip: book a fall trip around the third week of October to catch peak foliage along the Great River Road, it's stunning and far less crowded than summer.
weather.gov/lsx/I'm a first-time renter, will I actually know how to drive and use the RV?
You'll be set up for success, even if it's your first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup or delivery, walking you through driving tips, leveling, slide-outs, water and waste systems, generator use, and how to dump tanks. Hosts in the Old Jamestown and greater St. Louis area are used to first-timers and answer questions over text throughout your trip. The flat, grid-style streets around North County and Florissant are great for a practice lap before you head out on I-270. Pro tip: ask your host for a short video tour after booking, you'll arrive at pickup already familiar with the rig and ready to roll.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/rving-safetyWhat if I break down or have an issue on the road?
You are never on your own. Every RV rental in Old Jamestown booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering things like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. If something happens on I-270, Highway 367, or out on a rural stretch toward the Ozarks, you call the dedicated roadside line and help is dispatched. RVezy customer support is also available before, during, and after your trip for anything non-mechanical. Pro tip: save the roadside number in your phone before pickup, and snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate, it speeds up dispatch if you ever need help on a backroad near Wentzville or Troy.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take an Old Jamestown RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome on almost every RV rental in Missouri. From Old Jamestown you can easily cross into Illinois (5 minutes east), Iowa, Arkansas, Kentucky, and Tennessee without any special paperwork. Canada trips may be allowed depending on the specific host and protection coverage, so message the host directly through the listing before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico, however, is not permitted on RVezy rentals because protection coverage does not extend across that border. Popular cross-border routes from Old Jamestown include Nashville (310 miles), the Smoky Mountains (510 miles), and Chicago (300 miles). Pro tip: discuss your full route with your host up front to confirm mileage and any state-park reservations match the trip plan.
cbp.gov/travelWhat should I budget for fuel on a Missouri RV trip?
Missouri has some of the lowest gas prices in the country, which makes budgeting for your RV camping Old Jamestown adventure easy. Class C motorhomes typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon (mpg), Class B campervans get 16 to 20 mpg, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10 to 14 mpg). With Missouri gas prices often running 30 to 50 cents below the national average, a 500-mile round trip in a Class C costs roughly $150 to $200 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up at the Costco or Sam's Club off Lindbergh Boulevard before heading out, and use the GasBuddy app along I-44 toward the Ozarks where rural stations can spike on holiday weekends.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Old Jamestown?
Earlier is better, but you've got flexibility. Missouri State Parks like Cuivre River, Babler Memorial, and Onondaga Cave use the ReserveMOstateparks system and open bookings up to 12 months in advance, with prime summer weekends often filling 3 to 6 months out. Private parks like Sundermeier RV Park, 370 Lakeside, and the Eureka KOA can usually be booked 1 to 3 months ahead, though July 4 weekend and Memorial Day are exceptions. For shoulder-season trips in April, May, or October, two to four weeks ahead is typically plenty. Pro tip: if your dates are locked in, reserve the campground first, then book your RVezy rig, hosts in North County tend to have better last-minute availability than top campsites.
icampmo1.usedirect.com/MSPWeb/What are driving conditions like around Old Jamestown for a larger RV?
Driving an RV around Old Jamestown is very manageable. The area sits in north St. Louis County with wide suburban roads, easy access to I-270, I-170, and Highway 367, and gentle, rolling terrain (no mountain passes). Watch for the 13-foot 6-inch clearance standard on most Missouri highway overpasses, summer afternoon thunderstorms with gusty winds, and rush-hour congestion on I-270 between 7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. weekdays. Downtown St. Louis has tighter clearances near older bridges and parking decks, so park-and-ride at the North Hanley MetroLink station if you want to visit the Arch. Pro tip: head out before 8 a.m. on departure day to clear the metro before traffic builds.

Missouri State Parks like Cuivre River and Babler Memorial offer electric and water hookups with central dump stations, hot showers, and potable water fill stations. Need to dump or fill water on the road? Most Pilot/Flying J truck stops along I-70 and I-44 have public dump stations for around $10 to $15. Pro tip: arrive at your campsite before 4 p.m. so you've got daylight to level and hook up.

Many also include a generator, outdoor speakers, Bluetooth stereo, and Wi-Fi hotspots. Campervan rental Old Jamestown options (Class B) are more compact but still pack sleeping for two, a kitchenette, and sometimes a wet bath. Pro tip: check the listing's amenity list and photos carefully, then message the host to confirm bedding, towels, and kitchen basics, many St. Louis hosts include linens and starter kits at no extra cost.

Mileage policies vary, expect 100 to 150 free miles per day, with overage fees of 30 to 45 cents per mile or RV rental with unlimited mileage available on select listings. Pro tip: bundle add-ons at booking instead of asking later, hosts often offer package discounts when you commit up front.
fmcsa.dot.gov/safety/rving-tipsHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and secure. When you book an RV rental in Old Jamestown, you pay through RVezy's platform with a credit or debit card, never in cash to the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from the booking payment (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig) and is released back to your card after the host confirms the RV was returned in good condition, usually within a few days of drop-off. Pro tip: do a quick walkthrough video at pickup and drop-off showing the exterior, interior, and odometer, this simple step keeps deposit conversations smooth and gets your hold released faster.

Yes, winter RV rental in Old Jamestown is absolutely possible and can be a fun, quieter way to experience the area. St. Louis winters are mild compared to the upper Midwest, daytime highs typically range from 35 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit, with occasional dips into the teens during cold snaps. Many local hosts offer four-season rigs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and propane furnaces that handle Missouri winters well. Campgrounds like Sundermeier RV Park stay open year-round with full hookups, while most state parks shut off water lines but keep electric sites available. Pro tip: book a rig with shore power and ask the host about freeze prevention (heated hose, skirting), then enjoy crisp hikes at Castlewood State Park without the summer crowds.
