Camping near Steelville, Missouri
Steelville sits in the Missouri Ozarks at the headwaters of the Meramec River, about 90 minutes southwest of St. Louis off Interstate 44. The town promotes itself as the floating capital of Missouri, and most nearby campgrounds are private river resorts built around canoe, kayak, raft, and tube trips on the Meramec, Courtois, and Huzzah rivers.
RV travelers have a mix of options within a short drive. Private riverfront resorts including Cobblestone Lodge, The Rafting Company Camping RV Resort, Lucky Clover Lakeside River Resort, Candy Cane RV Park and Campground, and Garrisons River Resort cluster along the Meramec and its tributaries and typically bundle campsites with on-site outfitter service.
For a more traditional park setting, Meramec State Park lies about 30 miles downriver near Sullivan and offers basic, electric, electric/water, and full hookup sites managed by Missouri State Parks. Between private resorts and the state park, the area covers everything from primitive tent camping to full-hookup pull-through RV sites.
Things to do around Steelville
Floating is the anchor activity. Outfitters in and around Steelville run half-day and multi-day trips on the upper Meramec, Courtois, and Huzzah rivers, with rafts, canoes, kayaks, and tubes available. Lucky Clover Lakeside River Resort and The Rafting Company Camping RV Resort are among the properties that combine on-site camping with full outfitter service, so floats begin and end at the campground.
Beyond the water, Meramec State Park protects riverside bluffs, hiking trails, and Fisher Cave, which is toured by lantern light. Meramec Caverns near Stanton is a separate commercial cave with its own float program ending at the cave property. Bass fishing, swimming holes, and small-town dining in downtown Steelville round out a typical trip.

The Steelville float season runs roughly from April through October, and demand tracks water temperature more than air temperature. Late spring and early summer bring the strongest current and the fullest campgrounds, especially on weekends and around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day.
Spring is the wettest part of the year in this part of Missouri, and heavy rain can push the Meramec, Courtois, and Huzzah into flood, temporarily closing river access and low-lying riverside sites at private resorts and at Meramec State Park. Checking outfitter status before arrival is worthwhile in March, April, and May.
Summer is hot and humid, with average highs in the mid to upper 80s Fahrenheit and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Fall brings cooler nights, lighter crowds, and Ozark hardwood color through October. Winters are cold with occasional snow; Meramec State Park stays open year-round, but many private resorts scale back or close between November and March.
How to book a campsite
Reservations at Meramec State Park and other Missouri state parks are handled through the state's iCampMO system online or by calling 877-ICampMO (877-422-6766). Sites can be reserved up to 12 months in advance, and any campsites not reserved remain available for walk-up registration at the park.
Private resorts around Steelville, including Cobblestone Lodge, Candy Cane RV Park and Campground, and Garrisons River Resort, book directly through their own websites or by phone. Float-trip packages are usually reserved with the campsite, so it helps to confirm boat type, put-in time, and shuttle logistics in the same call.
For summer weekends and holiday periods, riverfront sites at both state and private campgrounds tend to fill weeks or months ahead. Weekday arrivals and shoulder-season trips in May or September have far more availability.
What to expect on the ground
Most private campgrounds near Steelville are working float resorts, which means high energy on summer weekends, group sites, and a lively atmosphere near the river. Families looking for a quieter stay often choose loops set back from the water, midweek dates, or Meramec State Park, which enforces standard quiet hours.
Site types range from primitive tent pads to gravel or grass RV sites with 30- and 50-amp service. Full hookups exist but are limited; many riverside resorts offer water and electric only, with a central dump station. Big rigs should confirm site length and low-branch clearance before booking, since access roads through the hills can be narrow.
Cell service is spotty in the river valleys, ticks and chiggers are active from spring through early fall, and river levels can rise quickly after storms, so it is worth checking gauge readings before floating.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Steelville,MissouriDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Steelville, Missouri?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Steelville, Missouri. The state does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for any RV available on RVezy, including 35-foot Class A motorhomes and fifth wheels. RVezy approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and your ID is verified through the platform when you book. Visiting from outside the US? Booking is low-risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not the host), and every booking includes a money-back grace period right after you book, so if plans change quickly you are protected. Beyond that grace period, your refund depends on how far out from your trip you cancel and whether a qualifying situation applies. You can review the full cancellation policy in the RVezy Help Center and in your booking details before you confirm. The takeaway: it is safe to lock in your Steelville float weekend now and finalize the smaller details later.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV trip to Steelville?
Absolutely, and your pup will love it. Plenty of pet-friendly RV rental Steelville options are available on RVezy: just check the Pet-Friendly filter when you search, and you'll see rigs whose owners welcome dogs (and sometimes cats). Steelville is genuinely dog-friendly country: Meramec State Park allows leashed pets on most trails and at campsites, Bass' River Resort welcomes dogs in many of their camping areas, and dogs are famously happy passengers on kayak floats with outfitters like Lucky Clover. Pro tip: pack a towel and a tie-out stake, because between the river swims and the gravel bars, your dog will be living their best Ozark life.
mostateparks.com/park/meramec-state-parkCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Steelville?
Yes, and it's the easiest way to do your first Steelville RV trip. Many RVezy hosts offer RV delivery Steelville service, meaning they'll drive the motorhome or trailer to your campsite at Meramec State Park, Bass' River Resort, Huzzah Valley Resort, or Lucky Clover River Resort, level it, hook up water and electric, and walk you through every system before they leave. You never have to tow or back into a tight gravel site. Just filter by Delivery when searching, message the host with your campground details, and confirm the fee (usually based on distance from Steelville or Cuba). Show up, unpack, and start floating.
mostateparks.com/park/meramec-state-parkHow far can I drive on a Steelville RV rental, and are there unlimited mileage options?
You've got flexibility. Each host sets their own mileage policy on RVezy, with typical Steelville listings offering 100 to 150 free miles per night, additional miles around $0.30 to $0.45, and some hosts offering RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer trips. Steelville sits on Highway 19 just south of I-44, so popular drives are reasonable: St. Louis Gateway Arch (90 miles), Lake of the Ozarks (95 miles), Branson (155 miles), Mark Twain National Forest (35 miles), and Elephant Rocks State Park (60 miles). Pro tip: if you're planning a wide-ranging RV road trip from Steelville, message hosts before booking and ask about a flat-rate mileage package.
modot.org/Where are the best campgrounds near Steelville for an RV trip?
You're spoiled for choice. Some of the best campgrounds near Steelville include Meramec State Park in Sullivan (full hookups, 200+ sites, and a half-mile from the river), Bass' River Resort on the Courtois (full-hookup RV sites, pool, restaurant, and on-site float trips), Huzzah Valley Resort (huge family-friendly RV park with 50-amp sites on MO-8), Lucky Clover River Resort (private lakes plus river access), and Onondaga Cave State Park (cave tours plus 50-amp RV sites about 20 minutes away). mostateparks.com/park/meramec-state-parkWhen is the best time of year for a Steelville RV trip?
The sweet spot is late April through mid-October, with personality changes each season. May and June bring lush green bluffs, 70 to 85 degree days, and prime water levels for floating the Meramec, Courtois, and Huzzah Rivers. July and August deliver 85 to 95 degree heat that makes river floats feel essential. September and October are the local insider favorite: mid-70s, fall color along the bluffs, and far thinner crowds. Winter RV rentals are possible too (mid-30s to 50s) if you want a quiet cabin-style escape; just confirm the rig has a furnace. For a balanced first-time renting an RV experience, aim for the last two weeks of September.
weather.gov/lsx/I've never rented an RV before. Is Steelville a good place to start?
Steelville is one of the friendliest spots in Missouri for first-timers. The roads in and out (Highway 19, MO-8, and I-44) are wide, well-paved, and gently graded compared to mountain destinations, and the campgrounds here are used to welcoming new RVers. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering the generator, slide-outs, water systems, dump valves, and propane, plus a phone number to text if you forget something. Many also offer delivery so you skip the towing altogether. Pro tip: book a two-night stay at Meramec State Park for your first trip; the level paved pads make setup a breeze.
mostateparks.com/park/meramec-state-parkWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You will not be stranded. Every RV rental in Steelville booked through RVezy comes with 24/7 roadside assistance included in your protection plan, so a flat tire on Highway 19, a dead battery at Huzzah Conservation Area, or a tow situation on I-44 is one phone call away. Your host is also your first text: they know their RV better than anyone and can usually walk you through quick fixes like resetting the GFCI outlet or relighting the water heater. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip too. Save both numbers in your phone before you pull out of the driveway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trips from Steelville in an RV?

Cross-state to Kansas City is also a comfortable five-hour cruise. Insider tip: stretch your trip with a stop in historic Cuba, the Route 66 Mural City, just 9 miles north of Steelville.
modot.org/What kind of fuel mileage and gas costs should I budget for?
Budgeting is straightforward in Missouri, which consistently has some of the lowest gas prices in the country. Expect roughly 8 to 10 mpg for a Class A, 10 to 14 mpg for a Class C, 16 to 20 mpg for a Class B campervan, and 12 to 16 mpg for a tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer. Steelville has a Casey's and a Phillips 66 right in town, but the cheapest fill-ups are usually at the Love's Travel Stop in Cuba off I-44 Exit 208. For a typical 250-mile weekend loop in a Class C, plan on $80 to $110 in fuel. Pro tip: top off in Cuba before heading south on Highway 19.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Steelville?
For summer weekends (Memorial Day through Labor Day), book your campground 3 to 6 months ahead, especially for Meramec State Park, Onondaga Cave State Park, and Bass' River Resort, which fill fastest. Missouri State Parks campsites are reserved through the official ICampMO1 reservation system, and sites open up to 6 months in advance to the day. Private resorts like Huzzah Valley and Lucky Clover take reservations directly through their websites. Insider tip: if you strike out on a weekend, grab a Sunday-to-Thursday slot instead. You'll often get the same site for less, and the rivers are blissfully quiet midweek.
mostateparks.com/page/55196/camping-reservationsWhat are the driving conditions like around Steelville?
Driving in and around Steelville is comfortable for RVs of any size. I-44 (the main artery from St. Louis and Springfield) is a wide, divided four-lane highway with generous shoulders. Highway 19 from Cuba into Steelville is a smooth two-lane with rolling Ozark hills but no extreme grades. MO-8 east toward Potosi has more curves and a few short climbs, but nothing technical. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk year-round, and slow down for occasional gravel-road turnoffs to river accesses. Summer thunderstorms can pop up fast: pull off and wait them out. Winter ice storms are rare but possible from December through February.
modot.org/traveler-informationWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds around Steelville?

Bass' River Resort and Huzzah Valley Resort both feature full-hookup RV sites, pools, restaurants, and on-site float outfitters. Onondaga Cave State Park has 50-amp electric and a dump station near the entrance. For dumping and freshwater on the go, the Love's Travel Stop in Cuba (I-44 Exit 208) has a dump and potable water for a small fee. Pro tip: top off your freshwater tank before heading into Huzzah Conservation Area, where primitive sites have no hookups.

exploresteelville.com/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book your RV rental in Missouri on RVezy, you pay through the platform with a credit or debit card; no cash changes hands with the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig), which protects the host against damage beyond what the protection plan covers. As long as you return the RV in the same condition, with the agreed fuel and propane levels, and within mileage and generator-hour limits, the deposit is released back to you after your trip. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos at pickup and dropoff to avoid any surprises.
