Campgrounds and RV parks near Winfield, MO

The Mississippi River corridor is the main draw. Lake Lincoln at Cuivre River State Park offers swimming, boating and fishing, while the park's wild and natural areas provide hiking, backpacking, photography and wildlife observation, plus an equestrian trail with a campground for overnight stays. Across the river, Pere Marquette State Park delivers bluff-top overlooks and river access. The park offers spectacular views of the Illinois River and its backwaters from atop the bluffs, with boat launches providing access to the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers, and fishing for bluegill, carp, catfish, drum, largemouth bass and white bass. Hiking trails, equestrian trails and rock climbing round out the mix, and the visitor center is a starting point for winter eagle tours. From Sundermeier RV Park, historic downtown St. Charles and the Katy Trail are within walking distance.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in this part of Missouri. It is an outdoor delight to stroll through Cuivre River State Park in the spring when flowering dogwood is in bloom or in the fall when the trees are ablaze with autumn colors. Fall color drives are popular along the wooded ravines and riverside roadways at and near Pere Marquette, and in January and February the park is a hotspot for bald eagle watching. Summer brings hot, humid weather and heavier bookings. Ticks, chiggers and mosquitoes are active in the wooded state parks in warmer months, so bug spray is worth packing. Spring is also the peak severe-weather season, with the region sitting east of Tornado Alley and river flooding possible along the Mississippi and Missouri corridors. Winter narrows the options but does not close everything. At Cuivre River State Park, both the regular and equestrian campgrounds are open year-round, with reservations available from mid-April through October. During the off-season, November 1 through April 14, firewood can be purchased through the campground host or at the park office, and ice is not available for purchase.

Site types vary sharply between state parks and private RV resorts. The regular campground at Cuivre River has basic, electric, and sewer/electric/water sites, with a dump station and showerhouse on-site. RV sites feature gravel pads with fire rings, and sites can sit relatively close together with limited privacy screening. Camping is limited to any 15 days within a 30-consecutive-day period at any one park or historic site. At Pere Marquette, the Class A campground has about 80 sites with electrical hookups, a sanitary dump station, drinking water and a shower building, plus a nearby Class B tent area and two rent-a-cabins. Sundermeier RV Park in St. Charles is the full-service option: 106 level concrete pads, 39 pull-thrus, wide paved streets, A/C restrooms and laundry, 30/50 amp service, cable TV, Wi-Fi, picnic tables, on-site propane and a general store.
