The north entrance opens onto the road to Mammoth Hot Springs, with boardwalks above the travertine terraces and frequent elk in the historic Fort Yellowstone area. The Lamar Valley, often called the Serengeti of North America, is the region's prime wildlife-watching corridor for bison, wolves, and bears, and is best at dawn and dusk. Fly fishing on the Yellowstone River, whitewater rafting through Yankee Jim Canyon, and day hikes to Wraith Falls, Trout Lake, and the Hellroaring Creek overlook are all within easy reach. Outside the park, soakers head to Yellowstone Hot Springs north of town. Gardiner itself has outfitters, a small grocery, fuel, and a laundry and shower stop useful for RV travelers between hookups.

Cell coverage is generally usable in town but drops off quickly inside the park.
