Campgrounds and RV parks near West Glendive, MT

Makoshika State Park anchors the area. As Montana's largest state park, it includes scenic drives, hiking trails, a disc golf course, an outdoor amphitheater, and a visitor center that displays Triceratops and Tyrannosaurus rex fossils. Family-friendly options include the Diane Gabriel Trail, which passes an exposed hadrosaur fossil. The Yellowstone River adds paddling, floating, warm-water fishing, and spring paddlefish snagging at Intake Fishing Access Site north of town. Agate hunting along gravel bars is a popular local pastime. In town, visitors can explore the historic downtown, the Glendive Dinosaur and Fossil Museum, and nearby fishing access sites for a low-key afternoon.

Summers are warm and mostly clear, with July highs averaging in the mid-80s Fahrenheit and long daylight hours. Late spring, June, and September are the most comfortable stretches for RV travel; July and August bring the biggest crowds at Makoshika and the highest demand at Glendive-area RV parks. Wildfire smoke can drift through in mid to late summer. Spring is the wettest season, with May typically the year's rainiest month. Paddlefish season on the Yellowstone opens in mid-May at Intake, drawing anglers from across the region. Floating and tubing the river is generally not recommended until later in summer, when runoff currents ease. Fall brings mild days, cool nights, and quieter campgrounds through September and October, with the first measurable snow often arriving in October. Winters are cold and windy with January the coldest month. Expect a small-town base camp rather than a resort setting. Glendive has grocery stores, fuel, hardware and fishing supply shops, and a compact historic downtown with cafes and restaurants. There are no dining options inside Makoshika State Park itself, so plan to cook in the rig or drive into town. Sites at Makoshika are dry camping, with fire rings, picnic tables, potable water at the visitor center, and vault toilets, but no electric, water, or sewer hookups at sites. Some pull-throughs in the main Cains Coulee loop can accommodate larger RVs. Private parks around West Glendive typically provide full hookups and are the better choice for big rigs, slide-outs, or extended stays. Come prepared for eastern-Montana conditions: strong sun, low humidity, wind, minimal shade in the badlands, and stretches of limited cell service outside town. Carry extra water for hikes, and secure awnings and camp gear before leaving the site.
