Campgrounds and RV parks near Beach, ND

The main draw is Theodore Roosevelt National Park. The South Unit's scenic loop drive puts bison, wild horses, prairie dog towns, and painted canyon overlooks within easy reach of a day trip from Beach. Hikers can access roughly 70 miles of trails from near Cottonwood Campground, including short routes like Wind Canyon and longer options such as the Petrified Forest Loop. Mountain bikers and horseback riders come for the Maah Daah Hey Trail, a long-distance singletrack running through the Little Missouri National Grassland, with access from Sully Creek State Park. In spring and early summer, when flows allow, the Little Missouri River, North Dakota's only State Scenic River, is paddleable. Medora itself offers restaurants, shops, historic sites, and the summer Medora Musical.

The main camping season runs roughly May through September, with July and August drawing the largest crowds around Medora and Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Summer days are warm to hot, sometimes exceeding 90°F on the badlands floor, and shade at many sites is limited. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, and tornado risk peaks in mid-summer. Spring brings mild days, greening prairie, and the best chance for paddling the Little Missouri, though early-spring snowstorms are still possible. Fall is a strong shoulder season: cottonwoods along the river turn gold, wildlife is active, and campgrounds are noticeably quieter. Sully Creek State Park operates from April 1 to November 30. Winter is cold, windy, and snowy. Cottonwood Campground's north loop stays open year-round, but flush toilets are replaced by vault toilets in the off-season, the water fill station closes after October 1, and many nearby private campgrounds shut down. Blizzards and Alberta clippers can close I-94 with little warning.

This is high plains and badlands country: wide skies, exposed sites, strong wind, and dramatic temperature swings between day and night. Cell service is spotty inside the national park and on grassland roads, so download maps and reservation confirmations before leaving town. Most park and state-park sites are primitive. Cottonwood Campground has drinking water, seasonal flush toilets, and a water fill station through October 1, but no hookups and no dump station on site. Sully Creek offers a mix of modern electric-and-water sites, primitive sites, and vault toilets, with corrals available for equestrian campers. Bison, wild horses, and rattlesnakes are all part of the landscape. Give wildlife wide space, store food securely, and expect bison to walk through campgrounds, especially at Cottonwood.
