Campgrounds near Minot, North Dakota
Minot sits in north-central North Dakota along the Souris River, roughly an hour north of Lake Sakakawea and within reach of the Missouri Coteau prairie country. The city serves as a practical base for RV travelers heading to state parks, national wildlife refuges, and reservoir shorelines across the region. Interstate access is limited here, so most routes in and out follow US-2, US-52, and US-83.
Camping options range from in-town RV parks with full hookups to lakeside state park sites. Valley View RV Park and Roughrider RV Resort offer easy access to Minot itself, useful for stops during the North Dakota State Fair or the Norsk Hostfest. Mellow Moose Campground provides another nearby option for travelers staying close to the city.
For a lake setting, Sakakawea RV Park and Fort Stevenson State Park sit on Lake Sakakawea to the south near Garrison, giving RV renters access to walleye fishing, boat ramps, and open prairie views within about an hour's drive.
Things to do near Minot
Lake Sakakawea anchors most outdoor plans in the area. The reservoir is one of the largest in the United States and draws anglers targeting walleye, northern pike, and smallmouth bass. Fort Stevenson State Park offers a marina, swim beach, and hiking trails along the shoreline, and Sakakawea RV Park gives quick water access for boaters.
In Minot, families can visit the Scandinavian Heritage Park, the Dakota Territory Air Museum, and Roosevelt Park Zoo. The Souris River corridor has paved paths and picnic areas suitable for shorter outings.
Birders and wildlife watchers can drive north to the Upper Souris and J. Clark Salyer National Wildlife Refuges, both known for waterfowl and prairie species. The North Dakota State Fair in July is the largest event on the local calendar and drives strong campground demand.

The Minot camping season is short. Most state park and private campground amenities operate from roughly mid-May through late September, with peak conditions in June, July, and August. Fort Stevenson State Park keeps its main season open through the warm months, and reservable sites there fill quickly around holiday weekends and the State Fair.
Spring can be wet and muddy, and late snow is possible into April. Water systems at many campgrounds are not turned on until overnight lows stay above freezing, so early-season RV renters should confirm hookup availability before arriving. Wildflower blooms and migratory bird activity peak in May.
Fall brings cool nights, lower crowds, and strong walleye fishing on Lake Sakakawea into October. Winter shuts down most services: private parks typically close, state park loops go to limited or no-water operation, and wind chills routinely drop well below zero. Snow can linger from November through March.
How to book campgrounds near Minot
North Dakota state park campsites, including Fort Stevenson State Park, are reserved through the North Dakota Parks and Recreation reservation system at reserveNDparks.com. Campsites can be booked up to 95 days in advance from the date of arrival, while cabins and yurts open at 365 days out. Popular waterfront loops on Lake Sakakawea fill first for summer weekends, so watch the 95-day window carefully.
Private parks near Minot, including Valley View RV Park, Roughrider RV Resort, Mellow Moose Campground, and Sakakawea RV Park, handle reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Book well ahead for the North Dakota State Fair in late July, when in-town RV inventory tightens across the city.
For federal lands in the region, sites on U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reservoirs use Recreation.gov. Confirm rig-length limits, hookup type, and pet rules at the time of booking.
What to expect on the ground
Expect open sky, wind, and long sightlines. The terrain around Minot is rolling prairie broken by river valleys and reservoir coulees, with limited tree cover at many sites. RV renters should plan for windy setups, especially on exposed lakeshore loops, and secure awnings before leaving camp.
Cell coverage is generally reliable in and around Minot but can drop off along back roads near the wildlife refuges and on the north shore of Lake Sakakawea. Grocery, fuel, and RV supply stops are easiest in Minot itself; Garrison and Riverdale offer smaller resupply options closer to the lake.
Mosquitoes are heaviest in June and early July after wet springs. Bring repellent, screen tents if available, and expect prairie thunderstorms to move through quickly on summer afternoons.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Minot, ND
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Minot, ND?
An RV rental in Minot is one of the most affordable ways to explore North Dakota, with most rigs on RVezy ranging from about $90 to $250 per night depending on size and season. Smaller travel trailers and campervan rentals in Minot tend to sit at the lower end, while Class A and Class C motorhome rentals in Minot run higher, especially during North Dakota State Fair week in late July. visitminot.org/stay/camping/Do I need a special license to rent an RV in Minot?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Minot, North Dakota. The state does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal-use RVs under 26,000 pounds, which covers virtually every motorhome rental Minot hosts list on RVezy. You'll need to be 25 or older and upload your license during booking so RVezy can verify your ID through the platform. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home-country license. Most first-time renters are surprised how straightforward the process is, especially when the host walks you through everything at pickup.

The protection plan helps cover damage to the vehicle during your trip, and you choose your coverage level at checkout (not the host). While this is not traditional auto insurance, it provides meaningful financial protection for renters traveling anywhere from Roosevelt Park Zoo to Lake Sakakawea. You are not locked in the moment you book. RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every booking (hosts do not), and it includes a money-back grace period right after you reserve, giving you breathing room to firm up plans before your Minot RV trip. Refund amounts after that depend on how far out you cancel from your trip start date. If a host cancels, RVezy refunds you or provides travel credit. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best rigs for State Fair week or Norsk Hostfest, then finalize travel details with confidence. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after every trip.

This is a game changer if it is your first time renting an RV or you would rather skip towing on US-2 or US-83. Filter by Delivery on RVezy to see local options instantly. Pro tip: ask the host about delivery to Lake Sakakawea State Park, about 90 minutes south, where the lakeside sites are stunning but the drive is easier when someone else handles setup.

parkrec.nd.gov/stay/campingWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip in Minot?

July is the warmest month, averaging around 82 F highs and 58 F lows, with about 16 hours of daylight, plenty of time to explore. June typically brings the most rain, while late August and September deliver drier skies and golden prairie light. Pro tip: aim for late July if you want the North Dakota State Fair (the state's biggest event), or early September for cooler, quieter campgrounds and excellent walleye fishing on Lake Sakakawea.
weather.gov/bis/Can I rent an RV in Minot during winter?
Yes, winter RV rentals are possible in Minot for the adventurous, though most campgrounds close after mid-October. A four-season ready RV is essential, so message hosts directly to confirm cold-weather readiness before booking. Be ready for serious cold: January averages around 21 F highs and near 0 F lows in Minot, with heavy annual snowfall. Look for a four-season RV with heated holding tanks, propane furnace, and shore power compatibility, and ask the host about winterization. Pro tip: parking with shore power is essential below freezing, and plan basecamps where plowed access and electric hookups are confirmed in advance.
weather.gov/bis/I've never rented an RV before. Is Minot a good place to start?
Minot is a fantastic spot for a first time renting an RV. Traffic is light, roads are wide and flat, and US-83, US-2, and US-52 are straightforward drives. Every RVezy host gives a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering the generator, slide-outs, water systems, leveling, and dump procedures, so you're never figuring it out alone. Choose a smaller Class C or travel trailer for your first trip, and consider delivery so you skip the highway entirely. Pro tip: plan a short shakedown night at Roughrider RV Resort just 10 minutes from town before heading to Lake Sakakawea, that way you learn the systems with full hookups and Wi-Fi nearby.
visitminot.org/What happens if something goes wrong on the road?
You're covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection package, so a flat tire on US-83 or a dead battery at Fort Stevenson State Park is handled with one phone call. Your host is also a direct resource for quirks specific to their rig, and RVezy customer support backs both of you up. Cell service is solid along major North Dakota highways near Minot but can thin out in remote areas like the Turtle Mountains, so download offline maps before you go. Pro tip: snap photos of the propane shutoff, breaker panel, and water valves during your walkthrough so you can troubleshoot quickly if needed.
dot.nd.gov/travel-infoCan I cross into Canada with a Minot RV rental?
Cross-border trips into Canada are possible with many Minot hosts, since the International Peace Garden and Portal/North Portal crossings are just 90 minutes north of the city, but you will need the host's written approval first. Message the host through the listing before booking to confirm and request the proper insurance documentation. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Bring your passport, driver's license, and rabies certificates for pets. Pro tip: a quick Manitoba run to Riding Mountain National Park or a Saskatchewan loop through Moose Mountain Provincial Park makes for an incredible cross-border RV road trip from Minot, plan border-crossing times for mornings to avoid afternoon waits.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Minot RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable cost on an RV road trip from Minot. Expect Class B campervans to get roughly 18-22 MPG, Class C motorhomes 8-12 MPG, and Class A rigs 6-9 MPG. North Dakota gas prices typically run slightly below the national average, and you'll find plenty of stations along US-2, US-83, and I-94. For a 500-mile loop to Theodore Roosevelt National Park and back, budget around $200-$400 in fuel depending on the rig. Pro tip: fill up in Minot or Bismarck rather than at smaller prairie towns where prices spike, and travel at 60-62 mph to noticeably improve mileage on those long, straight stretches of highway.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Minot?
For North Dakota State Parks like Lake Sakakawea and Fort Stevenson, the reservation window opens exactly 95 days before your arrival date through reservendparks.com or by calling 800-807-4723, and popular summer weekends (especially Fourth of July and State Fair week) fill within hours. Private parks like Roughrider RV Resort and Mellow Moose Campground accept reservations further out and are great backups. Remember: every vehicle entering a North Dakota State Park needs a daily or annual entrance permit on top of your campsite. Pro tip: create your account at reservendparks.com before your booking window opens so you can log in and grab your spot the moment it goes live.
parkrec.nd.gov/stay/campingWhat are driving conditions like around Minot?
Driving an RV around Minot is refreshingly easy: wide highways, light traffic, and gently rolling prairie terrain make US-2, US-83, and US-52 friendly even for first-timers. The biggest things to watch for are crosswinds (the prairie is open and gusty, hold the wheel firmly on bridges), summer thunderstorms with hail, and deer near dawn and dusk. Winter brings ice and ground blizzards, so most renters stick to May through October. Within the city, watch height clearances under the rail bridges on Broadway and 3rd Street SE. Pro tip: check NDRoads or 511 before any long drive, North Dakota DOT updates road conditions in real time, and prairie weather can change in an hour.
dot.nd.gov/travel-infoWhat amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Minot?
Campgrounds around Minot offer a nice mix of comforts. Roughrider RV Resort has 119 sites with water and electric hookups, on-site laundry, showers, and Wi-Fi. Mellow Moose Campground features pull-through sites, a private shower house, and a wooded nature trail. Lake Sakakawea State Park and Fort Stevenson State Park offer electric sites, modern restrooms, potable water fill stations, and dump stations, though water and comfort stations typically open after May 16. Pro tip: confirm full-hookup vs. electric-only when booking, and plan one dump-and-fill stop every 3-4 days. The Cenex stations in Minot and Garrison are reliable for filling propane and freshwater on the road.
parkrec.nd.gov/stay/campingWhat's included inside a typical Minot RV rental?
Minot RV rentals on RVezy come surprisingly well-equipped. You can expect a queen or king bed, a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink and cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, dinette seating with seatbelts, climate control, and often a TV. Larger Class A and Class C motorhomes typically include a generator for off-grid power, while travel trailers and campervans rely on shore power and house batteries. Many hosts include linens, camp chairs, and outdoor mats. Pro tip: check each listing's amenities list for Wi-Fi or cellular hotspot, helpful for streaming on cool prairie nights, and message the host with any must-haves like a coffee maker or pack-and-play before booking.
ndtourism.com/articles/camp-out-north-dakotaWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts offering an RV rental in Minot often provide useful add-ons: delivery and setup, generator hours, kitchen and linen kits, camp chairs, bike racks, propane refills, and dump-station service at return. Pickup is typically at the host's location in or near Minot, with a 30-60 minute walkthrough covering every system. Some hosts offer Instant Book for fast confirmation, while others review requests first. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a stocked kitchen kit if it's your first trip, the convenience pays for itself when you arrive at Lake Sakakawea ready to grill walleye instead of hunting for spatulas. Always confirm pickup and dropoff times in the booking message to avoid late fees.
visitminot.org/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment happens securely through the RVezy platform, never in cash to the host. You pay the booking total (nightly rate, service fee, optional add-ons, and protection plan) when you reserve, and a refundable security deposit is handled separately from the booking payment to cover any incidentals during your Minot RV trip. The deposit is released after your trip ends, provided the rig is returned in the same condition. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos and a quick walkaround video at both pickup and return of the exterior, interior, mileage, and fuel level. It is a 5-minute habit that keeps your deposit return smooth and your relationship with the host friendly.
