Campgrounds and RV parks near Kenmare, ND

The Des Lacs National Wildlife Refuge is the main draw. Its scenic auto tour route runs about 19 miles through the refuge as part of the North Dakota Scenic Backways program, passing Upper, Middle, and Lower Des Lacs lakes with interpretive panels along the way. More than 250 species of birds have been recorded here, including canvasbacks, white pelicans, western grebes, and marbled godwits. The refuge visitor center near the headquarters, about a mile west of Kenmare, is open weekdays with wildlife displays and brochures. Upper Souris National Wildlife Refuge sits about 34 miles east of Kenmare and offers panoramic valley views, a Prairie-Marsh Scenic Drive, and fishing on the 9,600-acre Lake Darling. In town, the Danish Mill in Park on the Square is a short family stop, and Kenmare's late-summer Goose Fest coincides with the fall waterfowl migration.

The practical camping season in this part of North Dakota runs from late spring through early fall. Most private RV parks and regional parks in the area, including Moose Creek Regional Park across the border in Saskatchewan, operate roughly May through September, and freezing temperatures and snow can extend from October into April. Late April and May bring the spring waterfowl migration through the Des Lacs valley, when the refuge is at its busiest for birders. June through August is prime camping weather with warm days, long daylight, and the highest chance of afternoon thunderstorms. Mosquitoes can be heavy near the wetlands in early summer, so screens and repellent are worth planning for. September and early October are the shoulder season: cooler nights, thinner crowds, harvest activity across the surrounding wheat and canola country, and the fall goose migration that gives Kenmare its Goose Fest reputation. By November, most seasonal parks have closed and the refuge gravel roads can become impassable after snow.

Kenmare is a small prairie community, and services scale accordingly. Expect a grocery stop, a handful of restaurants, and a fuel station or two in town. Larger supply runs, RV parts, and medical services are in Minot, about an hour south. Campgrounds in this corridor lean toward simple gravel or grass sites with electric and water hookups, dump stations rather than in-site sewer at some parks, and basic bathhouses. 4 Bears Casino RV Park on Lake Sakakawea is the closest larger full-hookup facility. Cell service is generally reliable along Highway 52 and thins out on refuge back roads. Wind is a constant on the open prairie, so leveling, awning management, and slide-out planning matter. Refuge roads are gravel, and while the main auto tour is maintained, narrower spurs are not recommended for trailers.
