Campgrounds near Bismarck
Bismarck sits along the Missouri River in central North Dakota, and its campgrounds cluster around the river corridor and the neighboring city of Mandan. RV travelers typically choose between full-hookup private parks in town and state or public sites just outside it. Bismarck KOA Journey and A Prairie Breeze RV Park handle most in-city hookup demand, while Hillcrest Acres RV Park offers a quieter option on the edge of the metro.
Ft Abraham Lincoln State Park, about seven miles south of Mandan, is the region's anchor public campground. It combines modern electric sites, primitive loops, and cabins along the Heart and Missouri rivers, with reconstructed Mandan earthlodges and a frontier-era military post on site. Kimball Bottoms Recreational Area ORV, along the Missouri south of Bismarck, adds a primitive option with river access and off-road-vehicle trails.
Together these give RV travelers a mix of pull-through hookup sites, historic state-park camping, and rustic river bottoms within a short drive of downtown Bismarck.
Things to do near Bismarck
Ft Abraham Lincoln State Park is the main draw. Visitors tour the reconstructed On-A-Slant Mandan Indian Village, the Custer House, and the blockhouses of Fort McKeen, and hike or bike the trail system through the Heart and Missouri River bottoms. Living-history programs and a visitor-center museum run through the warm months.
In town, the North Dakota Heritage Center, the State Capitol grounds, and the Dakota Zoo give families weather-flexible options. Along the river, boat launches and shoreline fishing access are available at Kimball Bottoms Recreational Area ORV, which also has designated off-road-vehicle trails across the river bottoms.
Day trips include Cross Ranch State Park upstream on the Missouri and the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center in Washburn, both within about an hour's drive.

December - February

The practical RV season runs from late April through early October. Ft Abraham Lincoln State Park keeps its modern campground open during the warm months, with full facilities generally available from spring through fall; cabins and some primitive sites operate seasonally. Winters are cold enough that most public campgrounds shut water service and close shower buildings, and snow can persist into March.
Summer is peak. June is typically the wettest month of the year in Bismarck, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms, while July and August deliver the warmest camping weather. Weekends and holidays fill quickly at the state park, especially around the Fourth of July and during summer living-history events.
Shoulder seasons reward flexibility. Late May and September usually offer cool nights, thinner crowds, and open hookups, though mosquitoes near the river corridor peak in early summer and cold snaps can arrive by October.
How to book
State-park sites at Ft Abraham Lincoln are reserved through the North Dakota Parks and Recreation system at reservendparks.com or by phone. Campsites and seasonal lodging can be booked up to 95 days ahead, while cabins and yurts open up to 365 days out. A vehicle entrance permit, sold daily or annually, is required in addition to the campsite fee.
Private parks including Bismarck KOA Journey, Hillcrest Acres RV Park, and A Prairie Breeze RV Park take reservations directly through their own websites or booking lines, and are the more reliable option for last-minute summer weekends.
Kimball Bottoms Recreational Area ORV is primitive, first-come, first-served, so no reservation is needed or accepted.
What to expect
Sites near Bismarck are a mix of open prairie and shaded river-bottom loops. Ft Abraham Lincoln State Park has spacious RV sites with electric hookups, shower houses, vault toilets, and a dump station; some loops are well shaded by cottonwoods. Private parks in town lean toward full hookups, gravel pads, and Wi-Fi.
Bring bug spray. Mosquitoes are common near the Missouri and Heart rivers from June into August, and wind across the open plains can be strong enough to complicate awnings and satellite setups. Cell coverage is generally reliable across the metro and at the state park.
Kimball Bottoms is primitive: vault toilets, river access, no hookups, and shared use with off-road-vehicle traffic and anglers.

ndtourism.com/articles/camp-out-north-dakotaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Bismarck?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Bismarck for almost every rig on the platform. North Dakota does not require a special endorsement or Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for personal-use motorhomes under 26,000 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), which covers virtually every Class B campervan, Class C motorhome, and travel trailer you'll find on RVezy. You do need to be 25 or older, and RVezy will verify your ID right through the platform during booking. Visiting from abroad? help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Bismarck RV rental?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy (not the host) sets the cancellation policy, and every reservation includes a grace-period window where you can cancel for a full refund shortly after booking. After that, the refund amount depends on how close you are to your trip start date. If a host cancels, RVezy refunds you or offers travel credit so your plans stay protected. The simplest move: book the Bismarck dates you want now, and reach out to RVezy support if your plans change.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Bismarck RV rental?
Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental Bismarck travelers love is just a filter click away on RVezy. Use the Pet-Friendly filter to instantly see hosts who welcome dogs, and message the host directly if you have a specific breed or size question. North Dakota State Parks like Fort Abraham Lincoln and Cross Ranch welcome leashed pets, and the Bismarck KOA Journey has a dedicated dog park on site. Pro tip: bring a tie-out stake and an extra towel for muddy Missouri River paws.
parkrec.nd.gov/parks/fort-abraham-lincoln-state-parkCan the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway in Bismarck?
Yes, RV delivery Bismarck is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-time renters. Many local hosts will tow a travel trailer right to Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park, the Bismarck KOA Journey, General Sibley Park, or your private driveway, then level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. That means zero stress about backing a 30-foot rig into a tight site. Use the Delivery filter when searching, message the host with your address or campsite number, and confirm the delivery fee, which is often a flat rate plus a per-mile charge beyond a set radius.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Bismarck,%20North%20DakotaHow far can I drive on a Bismarck RV trip, and how does mileage work?
You have plenty of range for an epic Bismarck RV trip. Hosts on RVezy set their own mileage policies: many offer 100 to 150 free miles per night, and some list RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is gold for longer routes. From Bismarck you can reach Theodore Roosevelt National Park near Medora (about 135 miles west on I-94), Lake Sakakawea State Park (about 75 miles northwest), Cross Ranch State Park (about 40 miles north), Mount Rushmore in South Dakota (about 360 miles south), and Fargo (about 195 miles east). Pro tip: if you are planning a multi-state loop, filter for unlimited-mileage listings or message the host to confirm a flat-rate package.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Bismarck,%20North%20DakotaWhere are the best campgrounds near Bismarck for an RV?
You are spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Bismarck include Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park just south in Mandan (electric sites, Custer House, and the On-A-Slant Mandan Village), Bismarck KOA Journey on Centennial Road (heated pool, full hookups, open seasonally), General Sibley Park along the Missouri River (electric sites and great river access), and Cross Ranch State Park about 40 miles north (year-round camping with heated cabins and quiet Missouri River frontage). Pro tip: book North Dakota State Parks up to 95 days out at reserveNDparks.com, the earliest window allowed.
parkrec.nd.gov/stay/campingWhen is the best time of year for RV camping in Bismarck?
Late May through mid-September is the sweet spot for RV camping Bismarck travelers rave about. July is the warmest month with average highs around 84°F and over 11 hours of daily sunshine, making it perfect for the Missouri River and Lake Sakakawea. June brings the lushest prairie scenery but also the most thunderstorms (it's the wettest month at about 2.6 inches). September is the local insider pick: warm days in the 70s, cool sleeping nights, fewer mosquitoes, and golden cottonwoods along the river. State park comfort stations and water typically open fully by May 16, so plan accordingly.
weather.gov/bis/climate_bisCan I rent an RV in Bismarck in the winter?
Yes, winter RV rental in Bismarck is possible and can be a memorable adventure if you come prepared. North Dakota winters are serious (January averages a high near 23\u00B0F with overnight lows often below zero), so look for RVs listed with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and skirting. Cross Ranch State Park stays open year-round and even rents heated cabins. When booking, message the host to confirm cold-weather readiness and plan to camp with shore power. Pro tip: pair your trip with the chance to catch the Northern Lights on clear winter nights.
weather.gov/bis/climateI am a first-time RV renter. Will I be okay driving in Bismarck?
You have got this, and Bismarck is one of the easiest cities in the country to start. Streets are wide, traffic is light compared to bigger metros, and Interstate 94 and Highway 83 are flat, well-maintained, and easy to navigate even in a Class C. Every RVezy host gives you a walkthrough at pickup covering hookups, holding tanks, generator, slide-outs, and driving tips, so you are never left guessing. If you are nervous about size, start with a small travel trailer or a Class B campervan rental Bismarck hosts offer. Pro tip for first time renting an RV: take a practice loop in a large empty parking lot before heading out on the highway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I have a breakdown or flat tire on my Bismarck RV trip?
You are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so whether you are on I-94 near Medora, on Highway 1806 along the Missouri, or near Theodore Roosevelt National Park, help is one phone call away. Roadside assistance typically covers flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing. Your host is also usually a text away and knows the rig inside and out, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after every trip. Save the roadside number in your phone before pickup and you will never feel alone on the road.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Bismarck RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes to other states, and often yes to Canada with a quick host conversation. A road trip from Bismarck into Montana (Glacier National Park is about 700 miles west), South Dakota (Mount Rushmore and the Black Hills, about 360 miles south), or Minnesota (Itasca State Park, about 360 miles east) is allowed on standard RVezy bookings. For Canada, message the host directly from the listing since insurance must be confirmed for cross-border travel, but Manitoba (the border is about 220 miles north via Highway 83) is a popular and approved route. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much will fuel cost on a Bismarck RV trip?
Fuel is one of your easier costs to budget in North Dakota. Gas in Bismarck typically runs about 30 to 50 cents below the national average thanks to in-state refining. A Class C motorhome gets around 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), Class A rigs roughly 6 to 10 MPG, and a campervan rental Bismarck travelers love (Class B) can hit 15 to 18 MPG. For a 300-mile round trip to Theodore Roosevelt National Park in a Class C, budget around $120 to $160 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up at the Costco on State Street or any Cenex station in Mandan for the lowest prices.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Bismarck?
Aim to book your RVezy rental and your campground at the same time, ideally as soon as the reservation window opens. North Dakota State Parks (including Fort Abraham Lincoln, Cross Ranch, and Lake Sakakawea) open reservations exactly 95 days in advance at reserveNDparks.com, and prime summer weekends, especially around the United Tribes International Powwow in September and the North Dakota State Fair, fill fast. Private parks like Bismarck KOA Journey and Hillcrest Acres take reservations year-round and are easier to grab last-minute. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for 95 days before your dream weekend and book online at 7 a.m. Central time the day the window opens.
parkrec.nd.gov/stay/campingWhat are driving conditions like in and around Bismarck?
Driving conditions are friendly for RVers most of the year. Bismarck sits on flat-to-rolling prairie with wide lanes on I-94 (east-west) and Highway 83 (north-south), and traffic is light outside the morning rush downtown. The main thing to watch is wind: open prairie crosswinds on I-94 between Bismarck and Dickinson can push a high-profile rig, so slow down to 55 to 60 MPH if gusts pick up. From November through March, expect snow, ice, and occasional blizzards; check ND Roads (the state's official 511 service) before any winter trip. Pro tip: avoid driving at dawn and dusk on rural highways since deer crossings are very common.
dot.nd.gov/travel/road-conditionsWhat amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Bismarck?
You'll find a great mix. Bismarck KOA Journey offers full hookups (water, sewer, 30/50-amp electric), a heated pool, laundry, and a dump station. Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park has electric sites, modern comfort stations with showers, and a dump station near the park entrance. Hillcrest Acres has 45 full-service pull-throughs ideal for big rigs. Most North Dakota State Park campgrounds keep water turned off until about May 16 due to freezing, so fill your fresh tank before arrival in early spring. Need to dump and refill? The Bismarck KOA and most state parks offer dump stations to registered guests, and the city of Mandan has a public dump station at the airport park.
parkrec.nd.gov/stay/campingWhat's actually inside a typical RV rental in Bismarck?
You'll be impressed. Most Bismarck RV rentals on RVezy come fully equipped: a queen or king bed, bunks or convertible dinettes for the kids, a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning, a furnace, and seatbelts for travel. Many include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, camp chairs, and a generator or solar setup for off-grid stays at places like Cross Ranch. Wi-Fi is sometimes included as a host add-on. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm what's stocked (linens, pots, paper towels, levelers) so you can pack light and focus on enjoying the Missouri River.
ndtourism.com/articles/camp-out-north-dakotaWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about in Bismarck?
Bismarck hosts offer some of the most flexible options on the platform. Popular add-ons include delivery and setup (often $2 to $4 per mile beyond a free radius), generator use (typically $3 to $5 per hour over a free allowance), linens and kitchen kits ($25 to $75 flat), bike racks, fire pits, and outdoor camping packages. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Bismarck, Mandan, or Lincoln, but many hosts will meet you at the Bismarck Airport (BIS) for a small fee. Mileage policies vary, so check the listing for free miles per night. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a stocked kitchen and you essentially walk into a turn-key cabin on wheels.
ndtourism.com/articles/camp-out-north-dakotaHow do payment and the security deposit work when I rent an RV in Bismarck?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card, never directly to the host, which protects both sides. A refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) is authorized on your card before the trip and released after a smooth return, usually within a few days. Avoid issues by taking timestamped photos and a short video of the RV at pickup and dropoff, sticking to the agreed mileage and generator hours, and returning the rig with tanks emptied and fuel refilled as outlined in the listing. Pro tip: do the walkthrough slowly with your host and ask every question. There are no silly ones.
