Campgrounds and RV parks near Washburn, ND

Washburn sits on the east bank of the Missouri River in central North Dakota, about an hour north of Bismarck. The corridor gives RV travelers direct access to some of the last free-flowing stretches of the Missouri and the reservoir system created by Garrison Dam. Most nearby camping is run by the North Dakota Parks and Recreation Department, with a handful of private options filling in gaps. The closest developed campground is Sanger Campground at Cross Ranch State Park, located on the west side of the Missouri River between Center and Washburn. Cross Ranch also operates a main primitive campground and backcountry sites. Farther upriver, Lake Sakakawea State Park and Fort Stevenson State Park anchor the reservoir shoreline near Pick City and Garrison. For full-hookup, big-rig-friendly stays, Sakakawea RV Park serves travelers heading to the lake, and Bismarck KOA Journey off I-94 works as a base for exploring the capital area, Fort Abraham Lincoln, and the North Dakota Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center in Washburn itself.

North Dakota state park sites, including those at Cross Ranch, Lake Sakakawea, and Fort Stevenson, are booked through the state parks reservation system online or by phone at 800-807-4723. Campsites can be reserved up to 95 days in advance of the arrival date, while cabins and yurts open up to 365 days out. All state parks also require a daily or annual vehicle entrance permit. Check-in at state park campgrounds is 4:00 p.m. and checkout is 3:00 p.m., with stays limited to 14 nights in any 30-day period. Bismarck KOA Journey and Sakakawea RV Park book directly through their operator websites. For summer weekends and holidays, reserve lakeside sites at Sakakawea and Fort Stevenson as early as the 95-day window allows.
