June brings the wettest weather of the year in this part of North Dakota, driven by active thunderstorms, followed by warm and drier conditions in July and August. Weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day fill quickly at reservable sites at both Lake Sakakawea and Lake Tschida. Spring and fall offer cooler temperatures and thinner crowds. Fall is popular with hunters, with pheasant, waterfowl, sharp-tailed grouse, and deer seasons opening across the surrounding grasslands and around Heart Butte Reservoir. Winter shuts down most developed campgrounds; showers and flush toilets at Lake Sakakawea State Park stay closed until mid-May.

Cell coverage on major carriers is generally usable at the more developed campgrounds and near the interstate. Amenities scale with the site type. Modern sites at Lake Sakakawea State Park include electricity and water, while primitive sites have neither. Sheep Creek Dam has a handful of electric sites, one water spigot, a vault toilet, and no dump station. Lake Tschida offers dump stations at Rimrock and Schatz Point recreation areas. Roads to some primitive areas are gravel or dirt and can be rough after rain, including the approach to Sheep Creek Dam. Rigs longer than 35 feet may find turning tight at Sheep Creek Dam.
