Campgrounds and RV parks near Hazen, ND

Fishing drives most trips. Lake Sakakawea is known for walleye, northern pike, and chinook salmon, and Fort Stevenson State Park bills itself as the walleye capital of North Dakota and hosts tournaments including the Governor's Cup. Boat ramps, marinas, and fish-cleaning stations are standard at Lake Sakakawea State Park, Fort Stevenson State Park, Indian Hills Resort, and Dakota Waters Resort. Beyond the water, families can hike, bike, and swim. Lake Sakakawea State Park has mountain bike trails and lake overlooks near the visitor center. The Garrison Dam National Fish Hatchery, minutes from the dam, is open to the public and features aquariums showing regional fish species. Fort Stevenson also has a prairie dog town, an arboretum, and a small museum.

The camping window is short and weather-driven. Most private and public campgrounds around Hazen operate from mid-May through early or mid-October. Dakota Waters Resort runs its summer season roughly May through September, and Indian Hills Resort's campground facilities generally open in mid-May and close in mid-October. Comfort stations with flush toilets and showers at North Dakota state parks are typically not fully open until around May 16. Summer is peak season. Walleye action, warm lake temperatures, and long daylight hours pull the biggest crowds from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and marinas, camp stores, and rental fleets run on that same window. Concession services at Fort Stevenson operate daily through the summer holidays. Fall brings cooler nights, hunting seasons, and thinner crowds, but freezing temperatures and closures arrive quickly. Winter RV camping around the lake is essentially over once water is shut off, though a few cabins remain available and ice fishing continues on the frozen lake.

Sites at the state parks are spacious and well maintained. Lake Sakakawea State Park offers a mix of modern campsites with electricity and water plus primitive loops, and Fort Stevenson provides modern sites with full hookups including electricity, water, and sewer. Private resorts skew toward RVs. Dakota Waters Resort has about 49 campsites with water and electricity, roughly 17 of which are set up for seasonal camping, and Indian Hills Resort offers a mix of full-hookup and electric-and-water sites on several loops. Wind is a constant on the open lake. Pets are welcome on leash at the state parks but not on swim beaches. Expect gravel or grass pads, fire rings, picnic tables, potable water, dump stations, and shower houses at the developed sites.
