Campgrounds and RV parks near Gwinner, ND

Gwinner sits in Sargent County in southeastern North Dakota, within easy driving distance of the Sheyenne River valley and several public campgrounds suited to RV travel. The surrounding landscape mixes rolling farmland, oak-covered river bluffs, and the Sheyenne National Grassland, giving families a compact base for lake fishing, short hikes, and small-town stops. City-managed Dead Colt Creek Recreation Area sits about five miles southeast of Lisbon and offers the closest developed sites with partial hookups. Sandager Park Pool and Campground provides a small in-town option in Forman, while Westside - Fort Ransom State Park anchors the state-park experience along the Sheyenne River to the north. Additional overnight options include Sheyenne Oaks Campground and, across the South Dakota line, West Unit - Roy Lake State Park. Together these campgrounds cover a range of setups, from partial-hookup RV sites to quieter, tent-friendly loops, so trip planners can match the campground to the size of the rig and the age of the kids.

North Dakota state park sites, including Westside at Fort Ransom State Park, are reserved through the North Dakota Parks and Recreation Department's online reservation system. Reservations open on a rolling window several months ahead, and holiday weekends fill first, so booking eight to twelve weeks out is recommended for July and August. Dead Colt Creek Recreation Area is city-managed and takes reservations directly through its site and partner portals; both drive-in and walk-in sites accommodate RVs and tent campers, with reservations available and pets welcome. Sandager Park and Sheyenne Oaks handle bookings locally, often by phone. Roy Lake State Park is booked through the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks reservation portal. Confirm rig length limits, hookup amperage, and check-in windows before arrival. Check-in at Dead Colt Creek is no earlier than 1 pm, and check-out is no later than noon.
